In certain types of producers and shaft furnaces operated with a blast supplied at high velocity through nozzles, the steel plates forming the shaft are protected by a jacket through which water is passed. This jacket has been constructed either for passage of water under high pressure or for passage of water under low pressure. The provision of the blast nozzles causes difliculties in constructing the jacket for passage under high pressure; on the other hand, the passage of water under low pressure involves the use of a larger volume of water than passage under high pressure requires, in order that the plates may be cooled adequately.
According to this invention the cooling jacket is constructed in two sections, a low pressure section at the lower part of the shaft where the blast nozzles are situated and a high pressure section at the part of the shaft above the nozzles.
The constructional difficulties are thus removed and at the same time the volume of water which must be passed through the upper part of the jacket is materially reduced. It is also of advantage to be able to circulate water through the low pressure section of the jacket in a closed cycle, a heat interchanger being inserted in the circulation to absorb the heat of the circulating water. In this manner accumulation of mud in the low pressure section is avoided so that the acket may be made of smaller size than when the water is not circulated. When the heat interchanger is a water heater, the cooling water from this may be passed through the high pressure section which may conveniently communicate with a boiler.
The accompanying diagram illustrates the invention.

Having thus described the nature of the said invention and the best means I know of carrying the same into practical effect, I claim l. A method of operating a producer or shaft furnace having a jacket comprising two superposed sections and blast nozzles extending through the lower section, which comprises supplying water under high pressure to the upper section of the jacket and supply ing water under low pressure to the lower section of the jacket.
2. A producer or shaft furnace, comprising a lower jacket surrounding the lower portion of the shaft, blast nozzles extending through said jacket, an upper jacket adapted to withstand high pressure surrounding the portion of the shaft above the lower jacket, means for causing water under low pressure to pass through said lower jacket, and means for causing water under high pressure to pass through said upper jacket.
3. A producer or shaft furnace comprising a lower jacket surrounding the lower portion of the shaft, blast nozzles extending through said jacket, an upper jacket adapted to withstand high pressure surrounding the portion of the shaft above said lower jacket, a heat exchanger in communication with said lower jacket, means for causing Water under low pressure to circulate in a closed cycle through said lower jacket and said heat exchanger, and means for causing water under high pressure to pass through said upper jacket.
4-. A producer or shaft furnace comprising a lower acket surrounding the lower portion of the shaft, blast nozzles extending through said jacket, an upper acket adapted to withstand high pressure surrounding the portion of the shaft above said lower jacket, a heat exchanger comprising a heating section and a cooling section, means for causing water under low pressure to circulate in a closed cycle through said lower jacket and said cooling section, means for causing water to pass through said heating section, and means for supplying water leaving said heating section to said upper jacket under high pressure.
