GEORGE CLAYTON REID, 0F GRANFORD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNORTO AMERICAN CA N COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
SHOE-POLISH BOX.
Application filed November 9, 1921.
This inventionrelates in general to con tainers, and is particularly embodied, by way of illustration and as a preferred form, in shoe polish boxes of usual general configuration.
A principal object of the invention is the provision of effective opening means incorporated in the structure of the .boxitself and operable simply by pressure of the hand.
A further object of the invention is the iprovision of a container of the type above specified whch may be constructed with but slight variation from the usual form and without the use of extra material or parts.
' Another object of the invention is the provision of a self opening container of even superficial form and so arranged thatthe special open ng.construction in no way our terferes with handling or storing of the paclzage, and is not likely to cause accidental removal of the cover.
Ninnerous other ob'ects and advanta es of the invention will-be apparent as it is bet ter understood from the following description, wh ch, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings,
, Figure 1 is an elevational View of a container constructed in accordance with my invent'on, a part thereof being broken away for convenience in illustration; and
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
The container, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a body 11 and a cover 12. The body has a cylindr cal wall 13 provided medially with a circumferential rib or bead :14 adapted to serve as a stop shoulder for the depending flange 15 of the cover 12. Said flange 15, when the container is closed, fric-i tionally engages an upper wall part 16 and by reason of the close fit between these parts a practically hermetic closure is provded. The upper wall part 16 is slightlytapered upward as shown. The cover is domed as indicated at 17 for the sake of appearance and capacity and to provide a constructionwherein the flange 15 may be sprung in a manner to be hereinafter'descrlbed to open Serial No. 513,918.
the box, the sheet metal of which such containers are usually made being suited to this over-lapping engagement with the body wall. a
Pressure by the fingers upon the offset portions 18 results in releasing the frictional engagement of the cover flange upon the Wall part 16 and permits complete removal of, the cover. Itwill thus be seen that no extra parts are required for opening the box, and the material and operat ons in constructions vary but slightly from those em ployed in a plain flange container. structure is simple and extremely effective in operation, being therefore of very distinct commercial and pract'cal advantage.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoingdescription, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and ar rangement of the parts without departing ing a flange adapted to frictionally engage the part of thebody above said rib only, and provided with offset hollowport ons at the bottom edge of the cover adapted to be The a pressed inwardly by the fingers to spring I said cover flange from frictional engagement with said body part, the part of the body above said rib being taperedinwardly towards its top edge and the cover flange being expansiblmby reason of sad ofi'set portions after it is pressed, relative to sand tapered part.
