This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in butting or wiping devices especially adapted to be used in connection with an apparatus for applying a heavier filler to a strip of lumber as disclosed in my application Serial No. 314,46 l, filed July 31, 1919, the object being to provide a buiiing or wiping device so constructed that the Wiping or buffing devices can be readily inserted or removed in order to allow devices of various natures to be substituted for one another to meet the requirements in filling various kinds of wood.
Another and further object of the inven tion is to provide a buiiing or wiping device which is provided with a central cross of flexible material and a marginal portion of radially disposed wiping members which or i ge the face of the material having the coating of filler in such a manner that the filler is wiped crosswise of the grain of the material so as to force the filler into the pores of the wood and to remove the surplus there'i rom, said wiping members acting on the material in such a manner as to give the same a polish as it passes the device.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.

adapted to be revolubly mounted on the carriage 3 in any suitable manner and driven in the direction opposite to the movement of the material, the particular construction of mounting and driving the wiper or butter is immaterial and in the drawing I have shown a belt for this purpose.
The hub 5 is provided with a disk portion 6 which is provided with a marginal flange 7 and an annular rib 8 spaced from the flange as clearly shown, said rib having a plurality of radially arranged dove-tail shaped grooves 9 into which are adapted to be inserted wiping members 10 corresponding in shape to the groove, said members being inserted from the center and forced outwardly against the marginal flange 7.
in Figure 3 the members 10 are formed of leather strips while in Figure 4 brushes 11 are substituted for the leather strips and it is, of course understood that these wiping devices can be formed of leather fabric,
rubber, wood or any other suitable material as l haveiound in practice that when operand on other kinds of wood rubber or wood wiping devices are used and therefore I do not wish tolimit myself to the use of any particular kind or" wiping devices although I have found in practice that very good results on ordinary oak wood can be obtained by forming a buiiin or wiping device with a marginal portion formed of spaced brushes.
After the desired number of wiping devices have been inserted from the center into the dove-tail shaped grooves 9, segmental members 12 are placed in the central portion of the disk, said members being of such a size as to leave spaces between the opposing edges of the segmental shaped members, between which wiping devices 13 are placed so as to form a central cross, said device can be formed of fabric, rubber, wood or any other suitable material.
The curved edges of the segmental memhere 12 formed beveled as shown at 14 and the inner ends of the wiping devices 10 are beveled as shown at 15 so as to engage these members and arranged opposite one or more of the grooves 9 are threaded bores 16 in which are mounted screws 17 adapted to engage corresponding wiping member so as to force the same inwardly in order to hold the segmental members in position on the face of the disk and I have found by this construction that a wiping or rotating member can be formed in such a manner that various wiping devices or strips will be held securely in position on the face of the disk of the revolving member in such a manner that all. danger of these members becoming detached when rotated. at a high rate of speed is prevented and by this construction I am able to interchange the various wiping devices in order to substitute the kind of strip desired to operate on particular kind of wood being treated very quickly. This also enables the worn out rubbing strip to be replaced by new ones by simply on crewing a number of screws and removing the segments which allows the wiping devices to be forced inwardly and removed from their grooves.
It will also be seen that af er the wiping devices have been inserted wit the grooves formed in the rib of the di that they are prevented from moving outwardly by the marginal flange and that when the segmental members are in position and the screws force one of the wiping devices against the outer edges of each segmental member, the wiping devices disposed between the segmental members are clamped between the same so that all of the members are held on the face of the disk securely.
What I claim is:
1. A buiiing wheel for wood finishing machines comprising a hub having a disk provided with a marginal flange, the face of said hub being provided with an annular rib spaced from the flange provided with radial grooves, a series of wiping devices disposed in said grooves, segmental. locking members disposed within said annular rib and adapted to engage said wiping devices, wiping devices arranged between the segments of said segmental members and means for engaging the outer wiping devices for forcing the same into engagement with the segmental members for holding said wiping devices in position.
2. A bufiing wheel for wood finishing machinescomprising a disk having marginal flange on one face thereof, a rib formed on the face of said disk naving grooves to receive wiping devices, said wiping devices being adapted to be inserted from the center and to engage the marginal flange and segmental members arranged within said rib having wiping devices disposed between the same.
3. A bufling wheel for wood finishing machines comprising a disk having a marginal flange on one face thereof, a rib formed on the face of said disk provided with dovetail shaped grooves, brushes corresponding in shape to said grooves disposed therein, segmental members arranged on the face of said disk within said rib, leather wiping devices disposed between said se mental members and means carried by said disk for engaging said brushes for forcing said brushes towards the center for holding said segmental membersin position on the face of saic disk.
4. A buffing wheel for wood finishing machines having a marginal portion provided with radially disposed. brushes and a central cross of strips of flexible material.
5. A device of the kind described comprising a disk having disposed on one face thereof a series of brushes and a central por tion formed of strips of yielding material.
6. A buffing wheel for wood finishing machines comprising a diskhavi'ng on one face thereof a marginal flange provided with threaded bores, an annular rib formed on the inner face of said disk and within said flange and spaced therefrom, said rib having dovetail shaped grooves, a series of wiping devices mounted within said grooves having beveled inner ends, segmental members disposed on the face of said disk having beveled edges engaging the beveled ends of said wiping devices, wiping. devices disposed between said segmental members and screws mounted in said threaded bores for engaging one or more of said brushes for forcing said segmental members together, clamping said wiping devices in position on the face of said disk. r
7. A buffer wheel for wood finishing machines comprising a disk having a marginal flange on one face thereof, a rib, formed on the face of said disk having undercut.

8. A buffer wheel comprising a disk having an annular enlargement provided with radial grooves, wiping devices interlocked in said grooves, segmental members arranged on the face of said disk within said enlargement, wiping devices disposed between said segmental members and means for forcing said first mentioned devices into engagement with said segmental members for clamping the last mentioned wiping devices between said segmental members.
