Application filed February The present invention relates to an iinprovement in weft replenishing shuttles.
In shuttles used in weft replenishing looms of the bobbin changing type it is necessary that the thread should thread itself into the eye of the shuttle during the first few picks, and to this end the thread extends from the end of the bobbin to a device for holding the end of the thread. Then as the shuttle makes its first pick away from the weft replenishing end of the loom it pulls from the end of the bobbin and falls in the threading groove of the threading block. Ordinarily upon the next pick in the opposite direction, the thread runs down into the shuttle eye. This eye is ordinarily located'in the shuttle at the bobbin tip end, and therefore the length of the thread extending from the-shuttle eye to the selvage is greater on one side of the loom than it is on the other. Specifically, it is greater on the weft replenishing side of the loom than upon the opposite side.
In weaving some fabrics, and particularly goo-ds of rather narrow widths in the nature of a band, and particularly in such fabrics where elastic threads constitute some of the warps, a difficulty presents itself in weaving owing to the necessity of producing an equal tension upon the weft at the selvages, and when the thread eye of the shuttle is more remote on one side of the cloth than on the other, the tension of the thread will be greater on the short side than on the longer side. That is to say, it will/be greater on the side remote from the weft replenishing mechanism than on the weft replenishing side of the loom.
The object of the present invention is to produce a weft replenishing shuttle for use in weft replenishing looms of the bobbin changing type having a threadV eye or exit through which the thread is discharged from the shuttle more nearly equidistant from the selvage on both sides of the loom than heretofore has been the practice. To this end the `invention consists in the shuttle hereinafter describedl and particularly defined in the claims.

The thread passes through the thread passage 12 of the thread block and down around the bealr 13, and thence through the lateral thread passage 14 to the horn 15, around which the thread reeves as it passes out from the shuttle. At this point the shuttle body is provided with a metal eye piece 16 secured in place by the bolt 17, by which the thread block 11 is secured in the shuttle. The eye piece 16 has a forwardly extended portion 18, which extends from the bolt 17 forward and inward and engages the inner surface of the Wood at 19. The eye piece is also provided with a portion 20, which extends rearwardly and is provided on its outer y surface with a thread groove 21, which is continuous with the groove 22 provided in the front side of the shuttle body.
From the horn 15 the shuttle body is provided with a recess in the front Wall of the shuttle to receive the eye piece 16. This recess the eye piece fits at the bottom, but is larger than the eye piece so that at the top the thread passage 23 is provided through which the thread may pass to the thread delivery eye or exit 24 located near the left hand end of the eye piece, as viewed in Fig. l. A guard 25 is provided on the eye piece which covers the top of the eye. A thread space 26 is formed in the eye piece through which the thread'may pass on its Way from the thread passage 23 to the eye or exit 24.
On the first pick of the shuttle to the left after replenishment the thread runs down into the thread passage 12 and lies in the groove 27 of the body of the shuttle. Upon the next pick to the right the thread reeves around the horn 15 and is discharged from the horn directly into the shed. The tension on the weft tends to pull it down into the thread passage 23, with the chance that on this pick of the shuttle the thread will pass beyond the guard 25 and enter the thread space 26. Upon the next pick of the shuttle to the left the thread will pass into the eye or exit 24. where it will remain during the continued operation of the shuttle. The bolt 17 is provided with a thread guiding Washer Q8, Which has an annular groove in its periphery and serves as a guide over ivhich the thread Will lead from the horn l5 on its way to the eye 24;
The groove 22 is,as seen in Fig. 2, a deep groove, and its position with relation to the eye piece 16 is Well illustrated in 'the plan view in F ig. 2. This plan shows how the thread may fall behind the inturned end of the guard 25 upon the second pick of the shuttle, which is the pick tovvard the right.
y`his shuttle, it vvill be observed, moves the thread delivery eye or exit from the eX- treme end of the shuttle toward the selvage when the shuttle is boxed on the right-hand or wett replenishing end of the loom. Therefore, if the ivarps be positioned a little bit olset the proper distance toward the righthand side of the loom, the length of thread extending from the sclvage to the thread delivery eye or exit of the shuttle will be the same on both sides. This re-positioning of the eye or exit in the manner illustrated and herein described reduces the amount of oii'sct of the warp .in order to secure the desirable result of equal length of Wett extending from the selvage to the shuttle eye or eXit. lVithout this offset, and assuming the Warp to be placed in the center of the loom, the eye or exit would sometimes be from l2 to 18 inches nearer the selvage from one end than the other, depending shuttle body provided Leeaaoa upon the size of the shuttle. This, therefore, permits the Weaving of a Wider band on the loom than would otherwise be possible Where the shuttle eye or exit was at the end of the shuttle.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is:
l. A shuttle for weft replenishing looms of the bobbin changing type consisting of a With a` thread block of the usual slotted type and a thread eXit located near the center of the shuttle, and a thread passage for leading the thread from the shuttle block to the thread exit.
A shuttle for weft replenishing looms of the bobbin changing type having the usual body to contain the bobbin, a thread block, and a thread exit piece secured to the shuttle body on the front side and consisting of a piece of stili material secured to the front side ot' the shuttle body and provided with a thread exit at the end of the piece toward the center of the shuttle, the shuttle body being provided with a thread passage to lead the thread to the exit.
A shuttle for weft replenishing looms ot' the bobbin changing type provided with a Lshuttle body, a thread block, and a thread exit located near the center of the shuttle, the shuttle body being provided with athrcad passage leading the thread from the thread block to the exit.
