Description

H. MOESER ALARM DEVICE Oct. 16,1928. 1,687,876
Filed May 1928 IN V EN TOR.
A TTORNEY Patented Oct. 16, 1928.,
UNITED STATES v 1 1,687,876 PATENT OFFICE,
HUGO monsna, on NEW 1031:. 11'. 12'.
ALARM Application filed May'2,
This invention relates to alarm devices and more particularly to devices which cause an alarm to sound when water in a bath tub has reached a predetermined level.
It frequently happens that when faucets in a bath tub are opened to draw water in the tub, the attention of the operator is diverted andthe faucets are forgotten with the result that the tub soon overflows. The overflowing water is always an unnecessary inconven ience and often causes considerable damage to the floor and to the ceiling beneath. Vhile a number of devices have been designed to take care of the overflow of water, such devices at times are ineffective as they do nothing to call attention to the fact that the faucets are open and the water is still running.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide an alarm device which will cause a gong to sound when the water in a bath tub has reached a predetermined level.
It is a further object to provide a device which is complete in itself and which may be readily attached to a standard bath tub.
These objects are attained by an apparatus comprising a hollow metal float which will become filled with water when the water reaches a predetermined level. Then the float is filled with water, it sinks. and pulls upon a cord to wind a spring of a mechanism which causes a gong to sound.
These and other objects are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, constituting a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a cross-sectional side View showing details of the device.
Figure 2 is a plan view taken along line 2-2 of Figure 1. q j p Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of a bracket used to attach the device to a bath tub. i Y
Referring to the drawings, a bath tub 5 is shown to have the device mounted thereon by means of a bracket-6, which has integral therewith a web 7 which supports a tube 8 through which slides a tube 9. The tube 9 is" provided with an aperture near its .end through which projects a hookll adapted to engage the. outer end of tube 8. The hook 11 is mounted at the extremity of a leaf spring 12, the latter being attached to the inner wall of tube 9, V
DEVICE. i928. Serial No. 274,386.
Tube 9 is pivoted at 13 to lug 14 attached toa cylindrical casing 17 and a brace 16 is pivoted to the tube at 15 and the other end of the brace 16 isadapted to engage notches in casing 17 to support the casing in adjusted positions.
Mounted diametrically opposite each other on the inner wall of casing 17 are a pair of racks 18 which are adapted to be engaged by spring members 19 to support a hollow metal float 20, the springs engaging the racks with a force just sufficient to support the float when the float is empty. l v
A rod 22 passes through the upper end of float and has attached thereto a cord 21. the other end of which is connected to a reel 23 and mechanism designed to wind a spring 24 when the float moves downwards. Mounted on the same shaft as reel 23 is a ratchet wheel 25 which is engaged by a hook at the end of one arm of a bell crank 26, the other arm of the bell crank engaging a lever 27 to cause the ball 29 at the end of the lever to intermittently strike the bell 28 as the bell crank moves over ratchet wheel 25.
In operation, when water in a tub reaches a level where it will flow into the float 20, the float sinks and pulls the cord 21 downward and causes the spring to be wound. \Vhen the spring unwinds the ratchet 25 is roated counter-clockwise to cause bellcrank 26 to cause the lever 27 to intermittently strike the bell and sound the alarm. In order to stop the alarming mechanism from operating, a pawl 30 is mounted on the casing and adapted to engage a toothed wheelassociated with the spring 24.
From the above description, it willbe seen i that I have provided a simple and desirable apparatus for audibly signalling when water in a tub has reached a'desired level; The apparatus may be readily attached to a bath tub and requires no skill to operate it.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only and not as restrictive-or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodimentmay be constructed, including many modifications, without departing from the scope of the appended claim. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is r A device for audibly'signalling when water -in a bath tub'has reached a predetermined level comprising a cylindrical casing open at the bottom, a pair of racks fixedto the inner Wall of the casing diametrically opposite each other, a hollow metal float, apair of spring arms attached to the float and engag ing the racks With a force just suflioient to support the float, an alarm device mounted on the casing above the float, and a cord conneoted to the float and the alarm device to ac tuate the latter When the float is filled with Water so that it sinks. 7 10 In itness whereof I have afiixed my signature.
