REGULATQB SYSTEM.
Application filed December My invention relates to regulator'systems and it has for one of its objects the provision of means for extending the range of operation of a vibratory regulator system. 1
A further object of my invention is the provision of means for protecting the regulator relays from being damaged by being subjected to a voltage in excess of a safe value. My invention contemplates the use of a dynamo-electric machine connected to a pow:
er circuit, the field of the machine being energized from an exciter-generator. I provide a vibratory regulator of the well-known Tirrill type connected to the power circuit and actuated in accordance with the voltage thereof to control a relay circuit. The relay circuit is energized from the exciter-generator and governs the operation of a plurality of relays,.one of which is actuated to control the voltage of the exciter-generator by varying the elfective value of a resistor in the field circuit thereof.
In regulator systems of the type described, the voltage impressed upon the regulator relays varies considerably as the voltage of.
the 'exciter-generator is varied. For example, when heavy load conditions occur on the power circuit, tending to cause a drop in the voltage of the dynamo-electric machine, the regulator automatically increases the voltage of the exciter-generator, thereby increasin the energization of the main machine fie d winding in order to maintain normal voltage upon the power circuit. The in- 5 creased voltage of the eXciter-generator causes an increased current to flow through the windings of the regulator relays. In order to prevent undue heating of the relays and extend their range, I provide a resistor in the relay circuit and provide means for normally short-circuiting the resistor, and forintroducing it into the relay circuit as the load upon the power circuit increases to exceed a predetermined value.
- My invention will be better understood by reference to the accompanying drawing in which the single figure is a diagrammatic view of the circuits and apparatus used in an embodiment of my invention.
Referring to the drawing, a dynamo-electric machine is provided with an armature winding 2 that is connected to a power cir cuit 4, 5, 6. The dynamo-electric machine 1 is also provided with a field-magnet wind- 55 ing 7 that is connected through a rheostat 4,- 1924. Serial No. 758,867.
i 8 to an exciter-generator 9. The exciter-generator 9 is provided with an armature 11 and a field-magnet winding 12, that is connected in series-clrcuit relation with a rheostat l3.
A regulator, indicated generally at 14, is provided, and comprises a control magnet 15 and an anti-hunting magnet 16. The control magnet 15 comprises a core member 17 and a winding 18 therefor, that is connected through a resistor 19 to the secondary winding of a voltage transformer 21, the primary winding of which is connected to the power circuit 4, 5, 6. The anti-hunting magnet 16 comprises a core member 22 and an energizing winding 23 therefor that is connected through a resistor 24 to the secondary winding of the voltage transformer 21. v
The operation of the regulator 14 causes the main regulator contact members 25 and 26 to become alternately engaged, and dis engaged thus making and breaking the circuit through the operating windings of'relays 27 and 28. The relay 27 comprises a pair of contact members 29 and a tension member 31 which acts to maintain the contact members 29 normally disengaged. The energization of the relay winding causes the contact members 29 to become engaged and thereby short-circuit the rheostat 13. The relay 28 comprises a pair 01": contact members 32 and a tension member 33 that normally holds the contact members 32 in disenga 'ement. When the operating coil of the relay 28 is energized, the contact members 32 are caused to engage and to short-circuit the resistor 24. In circuit with the regulator relays 27 and 28, I provide a resistor 34.
A relay 35 is also provided, the contact members 36 of which are normally maintained in engagement by the action of a ten sion member 37. .The engagement of the contact members 36 causes a portion of the resistor 34 to be normally short circuited. T he relay 35 also comprises a core member 38 and a dash-pot 39 connected thereto, and a wind ing 41 for energizing the core member, the
winding 41 being so connected to a current transformer 42 as to be sensitive to load changes upon the power circuit.
The operation of the regulator system is as follows:
The regulator 14 is actuated in accordance with the voltage of the power circuit 4, 5, 6 to control the relays 27 and 28. Therelay 27 controls the voltage of the exciter to be limited other than by the scope of the generator 9 by intermittently short-circuitmg the rheostat 13. The re ay 28 operates to intermittently short-circuit the resistor 24 thus causing the magnet 16 to vibrate. The relay 35 normally short-circuits a portion of the resistor 34 throu h the contact members 36. Should the loa in the power circuit exceed a predetermined value, the energization of the windin" 41 becomes sufficient to raise the core mem ber 38, and se arate' the contact members 36, thus intro ucing the resistor 34 into the relay circuit.
The resistor 34 acts to limit the current flowing through the windings of the relays 27 and 28 and thus to prevent them from becoming overheated, also Cpreventing the magnetic pull from excee ing certain limits. The introduction of the resistor 34 accompanies an increase in voltage of the exoitergenerator since the regulator will automatically increase the energization of the field magnet winding 7 with an increase in load. upon the dynamo-electric machine 1. The relay 35 has been indicated as a current relay. A watt relay may, however, be used.
Many modifications within the spirit and scope of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and I do not Wish appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a regulator system, the combination with a power circuit and a dynamo-electric machine connected thereto, of means for governing the excitationof said dynamo-electric machine comprising an exciter generator, a regulator and a plurality of relays connected to said exciter generator and actuated in accordance with the operation of said regulator, and means operative upon a predetermined load condition on said machine for extending the normal range of operation of said relays.
2. In a regulator system, the combination with a power circuit and a dynamo-electric machine connected thereto, of means for governing the excitation of said dynamo-electric machine comprising an exciter generator, a regulator and a plurality of relays connected to said exciter generator and actuated in accordance with the operation of said regulator, a resistor connected in circuit with said relays, and means for varying the effective value of said resistor upon a predetermined load condition on said power circuit.
3. In a regulator system, the combination with a power circuit and a dynamo-electric machine connected thereto, of means for governing the excitation of said dynamo-electric machine comprising an exciter generator, a regulator and a plurality of relays connected to said exciter generator and actuated in accordance with the operation of said regulator, a resistor connected in circuit with said relays, means normally short-circuiting a portion of said resistor, and means operative upon a predetermined load condition on said power circuit for removing said short-circuit.
4. In a regulator system, the combination with a power circuit and a dynamo-electric machine connected thereto, of means for governing the excitation of said dynamo-electric machine comprising an exciter generator, a plurality of relays, a relay circuit connected to said exciter generator for energizing said relays, a regulator for controlling said relay circuit, and means comprising a resistor connected in said relay circuit for extending the normal range of operation of said relays upon a predetermined load condition on said power circuit.
5. In a regulator system, the combination with a power circuit and a dynamo-electric machine connected thereto, of means for governing the excitation of said dynamo-electric machine comprising an exciter generator, a plurality of relays, a relay circuit connected to said exciter generator for energizing said relays, a regulator for controlling said relay circuit, and means for extending the normal range of operation of said relays, said means comprising a resistor connected in said relay circuit and a relay actuated in accordance with the load on said power circuit for varying the effective value of said resistor.
6. In a regulator system, the combination 'with a power circuit and a dynamo-electric machine connected thereto, of means for governing the excitation of said dynamo-electric machine comprising an exciter-generator, a plurality of relays, a relay circuit connected to said cxciter generator for energizing said relays, a regulator for controlling said relay circuit, and means for extending the normal range of operation of said relays, said means comprising a. resistor connected in said rela circuit and means actuated in accordance with the load on said power circuit for varying the effective value of said resistor.
