CONTAINER.
\ Application led November 21, 1927 Serial No. 234,695.
The prcsentinvention relates to containers, particularly such as are employed as ashreceivers Imounted in automobiles, etc. land its object is, generally, to provide a device of that character improved in-` certain respefats hereinafter appearing; and more particularly, to provide such a container having a covcr and improved means for yieldingly holding the same in opnv and closed positions; and further, to provide improved means for securing the parts .of such la container in assembled position, and more particularly, to provide as such means a spring functioning to hold the cover open or closed.
This object is attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiments in,A the structure hereinafter particularly described in the body of this specification and illustratcd' by the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a container mounted'in the arm of the seat of an automobile, or the like;
Figure 2 is a central vertical sectional vicw of the upper' portion of the saine taken on line 2 2 of Figure 3;
Figure 3 is a. vertical sectional view of the container taken on line 3 3 of Figure 4; and Figure 4 is a vertical sectionalvieW of a portion of the saine takenvoii line 4 4 of Figure 3. Y
In the'cmbodiment of the invention illustrated by these drawings, a container for tobacco ashes or the like is shown mounted in a cavity 1 extending downwardly from the upper surface 2 of Ehe arm 3 of the seat of an automobile or the like. This container comprises an open-top body member 4 having a bottom,and an annular member 6 surrounding the upper portion of' the body member and having downwardly extending walls or flanges fittiiigly and removably engaging the vertical lateral walls of said body member and having also an outwardly extending flange 7 resting on said surface 2 and concealing the cavityl. A cover 8 is mounted' on these members 4` and 6 swingably to closed horizontal position shown in solid lines in all thc views and to vertical open position seen in dotted lines in Figure 2f This cover has a downwardly extending .arm 9 whose i outer end slidingly engages in the covers swinging movement the upper surface of a fiat vspring 10 which is bowed upwardly as seen' in Figure `2, so as to yieldingly hold, by such engagement of the arm 9 therewith, the cover in either of said position to which it may be swung. The ends of this spring 10i are seated in horizontally elongated slots 11 through the opposite lateral walls 12, 13 of the body member 4 and in like slots 14 through the opposite downwardly extending walls or flanges 15,16 of the annular member A6. The other opposite lateral walls 17 of the body member 4 are provided with upwardly-open bearings 18, .and the other opposite downwardly extending walls or flanges 19 of the annular member 6 arevprovided with `downwardly-open bearings 2O axially registering with the bearings 18.
The cover has opposite spindles 21 each of which in the assembled position of' the parts is turnably seated in the adjacent bearings 18 and 20.
It will be seen that the parts may be readily assembled by seating the spindlesv21 in the bearings 18 in the bodyv member 4; then placing the annular member 6 `on the body 'member with the annular members walls or flanges 15, 16, 19 inside the lateral walls 12, 13, 17 of the body member, and the annular mcmbers bearings 20 lreceiving thespindles 21; whereupon the spring 10 vis passed through the registering slots 11, 14 in the walls 12, 13, 15, 16, and its ends 22 bent to the position seen in Figure 2, whereupon all an open-top container having opposite lateral walls; a cover mounted on the container swingably to'open and closedpositions and having a downwardly extending arm; a spring mounted at its ends on said walls respectively, bowed upwardly between the saine and engaging the arm to yieldingly hold the cover in swung position.
2. In a device of the character described: an open-top container having opposite lateral walls provided with horizontally-elongated slots therethrough; a cover mounted on the container swingably to openand closed positions and having a downwardly extending arm; a flat spring non-turnably mounted at its ends in the slots, bowed upwardly between said walls and engaging the arm to yieldingly hold the cover in swung position.
3. In a device of the character described:
an open-top container comprising a body member having opposite lateral walls7 and an annular member having downwardly ex- 'tending walls removably engaging the firstmentioned walls, said walls of one of said members being provided `with downwardlyopen bearings and said walls of the other ot'lsaid members being provided with upwardly-open bearings in axial registration with the first-mentioned bearings; a coverI having opposite spindles turnably seated in the first-mentioned and in the second-mentioned bearings.
4. In a device of the character described:V
an open-topl container comprising a body member having opposite lateral walls, and an annular member having downwardly extending walls removably engaging the firstmentioned walls, said walls of one of said members being provided with downwardlyopen bearings and said walls of the other of said members being provided with upwardlyopen bearings in axial registration with the rst-mentioned bearings; a cover having oppositespindles turnably seated in the lirstmentioned and in the second-mentioned bearings; means extending through the walls of said members for fastening the parts together. l
5. In a device of the character described: an open-top container `comprising a body member having opposite lateral walls', and ,an annular member having downwardly extending walls removably engaging the firstmentioned walls, said walls Of one of said members being provided` with downwardlyopen bearings and 'said walls of the other of said members being provided with upwardlyopen bearings in axial registration with the first-mentioned bearings; a cover having a downwardly extending arm and opposite spindles turnably seated in the first-mentioned and in the second-mentioned bearings; each of said members having also other opposite downwardly extending walls; a spring mounted at its ends thereon, bowed upwardly therebetween and engaging the arm to yield-- ingly hold the cover in swung position.
6.Y lna device of the character described: a`n open-top container comprising a body memberhaving opposite lateral walls, and an annular member having downwardly extending walls removably engaging the first-mentioned walls, said walls of one of said members being provided with downwardly-open bearings and said walls of the other of said members being provided with upwardly open RUDOLPH DE Bonn.
