The invention relates to locks and refers more particularly to locks for window regulators to hold the windows in their various positions of. adjustment. One of the objects of the invention is to provide a construction of lock the parts of which may be cheaply manufactured` and assembled. Another object is to provide a lock having its driving and driven members so constructed thatthey may be assembled in either of a plurality of positions relative to each other without destroying the operativeness of the lock thereby making the lock more fool proof in assembly. Further objects of the invention reside in the novel features of construction Land combinations and arrangements of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth. y

In the present instance I have shown a vehicle door to which is applied a window regulator having a lock embodying' my 1nvention. This vehicle door 1 has an Aopening in its upper portion and a chamber inits lower portion for receiving the window 2 36 when lowered from a position closing the opening. 3 is a wmdow regulator for raising and lowering the window and comprismg the pivotal lifter arm 4, the crank 5 and suitabley mechanism between the crank and the lifter w arm for swinging the latter upon rotation of the former. This mechanism includes the gear segment 6 upon the lifter' arm, the pinion 7 in mesh with the gear segment and 'the lock 8 between the pinion and the crank.
4,5 Both the lifter arm and the lock are mountedV upon the mounting plate 9 which is secured to the lock board of the door.
The lock comprises the driving member 10, the driven member-11, the helical s, ringy 12 so between the driving and driven mem the stationary sleeve 13 which' is normally frictionally engaged bythe spring. The driving and driven members and the stationary axial 'opening in the base of the driving mem- 4have also arranged the parts'so that rotation of the driven member forces the helical spring into former frictional engagement with 'the rs and,
sleeve are preferablyformed of sheet metal and drawn or stamped to'shape. These members are preferably cup-shaped. The base of the stationary sleeve preferably4 abuts the base of the driving member and. is provided with the axially located cylindrical flange 14. The outer end of the stationary sleeve terminates in the outwardly extending annular which` is rigidly secured to the v flange 15 mounting plate 9'.y The driving member may be journaled in the stationary sleeve and is connected to the crank 5, while the driven member is journaled in the sleeve and is connected to the pinion 7. 16 is a shaft having- Y a cylindrical portion 17 journaled in the.
vcylindrical flange 14, a reduced portion '18 adjacent to the cylindrical portion for rigid connection with the driving member, and an inner 'end portion 19 for rigid connection with the crank. The reduced portion 18 is preferably serrated land forced through an" ber and its outer end is preferably peened over upon the base. The driven member. 11 is rigidly connected to the pinion 7 by forming in the base of the driven member an axial having peripheral recesses correopening sponding to but slightly smaller than por; tions of the teeth ofthe pinion so that when the latter are pressed int-o the opening in the base of the driven member the pinion will be securely held to the driven member. To provide an extra bearing between the drive and driven members the shaft 16 is provided with the axial reduced extension 20, the outer .end
of which is adapted to fit within the bore 21 vin the inner end of the pinion.

the driving member 10 1s provided with apair of equally spaced fingers 22 extending transversely therefrom toward the driven member- These fingers extend integrally from thel annular flange of the driving member and substantially parallel to its axis, and are offset radially inward a sufficient distance to provide clearance for the helical spring. The driven member is also provided with the pair dit' equally spaced fingers 23 `which extend transversely from the driven member toward the driving member and are engageable in the spaces between the fingers 22. These fingers 23 also extend integrally from the annular flange of the driven member and substantially parallel to its axis and are ofl'set radially inward a sufiicient distance to provide clearance for the helical spring. Furthermore the ends of these lingers 23 abut the base of the driving member 1() to hold the driving .and driven members at a predetermined distance from each other. The helical spring surrounds the fingers-22 and 23 between the annular flanges of the driving and driven members' and has inturned ends 24 which extend into one ofthe spaces between the fingers 22 and at oppositeA sides of one of the fingers 23, the arrangement being such that upon rotation of the` driving member one of its fingers 22 engages one of the ends of the helical spring to contract the same and release it from frictional engagementwith the stationary sleeve, after which it brings this end into contact with the adj acent finger 23 of the driven member and then rotates the driven member. However, rota'- tion in either direction of the driven member causes its finger 23 located between the inturned ends of the helical spring to engage an inturned end and expand the helical spring into firmer frictional engagement with the stationary sleeve. As a result of this arrangement, the window may be readily raised or lowered upon rotation ofthe crank but can not be raised or lowered byv attempted direct movement of the windows. i
The fingers of the driving member are diametrically opposite and of the same size so that they are symmetrically arranged and as a consequence the helical spring may be assembled so that its inturned ends are alternatively engageable in either of' the spacesbetween the fingers. The fingers of the driven member are also diametrically opposite and of the s ame size so that they are symmetrically arranged and as a consequence either of these fingers may be engaged in either ofthe spaces between the fingers of the driven member and between the inturned ends of' the helical spring 'without affecting or hindering the op-` from sai-d driving and driven members, said fingers inter-engaging, and a helical spring within and normally frictionally engaging said sleeve, said spring surrounding said fingers and having inturned ends located between a finger of said driven member and the fingers of said driving member, whereby rotation of' said driving member in either direction contracts said spring and releases the same from frictional engagement with said sleeve and throughsaid spring rotates said driven member but rotation of said driven surrounding said fingers and having inturned ends located between either finger of one 'of said members and the fingers of the other of said members whereby rotation of said driving member in either direction contracts said spring and releases the same from frictional 3engagement with said 'sleeve' and through said spring rotates said driven member but rotation of said driven member expands said spring into firmer frictional engagement with said sleeve and locks the driven member from rotation.
3. Ina window regulator, the combination of a stationary sleeve, laterally adjacent driving `and driven members journaled in said sleeve, said driven member being operatively connected to a window, pairs of symmetrically arranged fingers extending transversely `from each of said driving and driven members, said fingers being alternatively interengageable and the fingers of one of said members abutting the other member to space said members from each other, and a helical spring within and normally frictionally engaging said sleeve, said spring surrounding said fingers and having inturned ends located between a finger of said driven member and the fingers of said driving member, said fingers being offset radially inward to provide clearance for said spring, rotation of said driving member in either direction contracting said spring and releasing the same from frictional engagement, with said yspring and through said spring rotating said driven member but rotation of said driven member expanding said spring into firmer frictional engagement with said spring to lock the driven member from rotation.
4. In a window regulator, the combination of a driving member, a pair of equally spaced of a stationary sleeve,
fingers extending transversel from said driving member, a driven mem er operatively connected to a window, a pair of equally space`d ingers extending transversely from said driven member and alternatively engageable in the spaces between the iirst-mentioned'pair of lingers, a helical spring arrangedtelescopically with respect to all of said lingers and having ends located between either finger of one of said members and the fingers of the other of said members, and a stationary member normally frictionally engaged by said spring, rotation of said driving member in either direction lreleasing said spring from rictional engagement with said stationary member and ythrough said spring rotating said driven member but rotation of said driven member forcing'said spring into firmer rictional engagement withv said stationary member.,I
5. In a window regulator, the combination a driving member provided with spaced driving portions within said sleeve, a driven member operatively connected to a window and located in substantially axial alignment with said driving member and provided with a plurality of transverse projections alternatively engageable in a space between said driving portions and a helical springtnormally frictionally engaging said sleeve, said spring surrounding said driving portions and transverse projections and having inturned endslocated between the transverse projection in the space and said driving portions, whereby rotation of said driving member in either direction contracts said spring and releases the same :fromv frictional engagement with said sleeve and through said spring rotates said driven member, but rotation of said driven member expands said spring into normal frictional engagement with said sleeve and locks said driven member from rotation.
6. In a window regulator, the combination of a stationary sleeve, a driving member provided with diametrically opposite spaced driving portions within said sleeve, a driven member operatively connected to a window and located in substantially axial alignment.

In a window regulator, the combination with a stationary sleeve, a driving member journalled in said sleeve andhaving a pair -o diametrically opposite lingers extending transversely therefrom, a driven member operatively connected to a window and located in substantially axial alignment with said driving member and having a pair of diametrically opposite fingers extending transd fingers interengaging, in a helical spring within and normallyfrictionally engaging said sleeve, said spring surrounding said ingers and having inturned ends located between a dinger of said driven member and the fingers'ot said driving member, whereby rotation of said driving member in either direction contracts said spring and releases the same from frictional engagement with said'sleeve and through said spring rotates said driven member, but rotation of sald driven member expands said spring into firmer frictional engagement with said sleeve and locks the driven member from rotation.
8. In a. window regulator mechanism, the combination with a cup, of a driving member journaled in said cup and having a portion within said cup provided with arecess, a driven member having a projection extending into the recess of said driving member, means extending axially of said driving member for rotatably supporting said driven member, and a coil spring within said cup and arranged to be expanded thereagainst,y
said coil spring having inturned ends engaging in the recess in said driving member upon opposite sides of said projection.
9. Ina window regulator, the combination with a cup, of a driving member in said cup provided with arecess, a shaft upon which said driving member is supported, said shaft being provided with an axially reduced portion, a driven member journalled upon said reduced portion and provided with a projection extending within the recessed portion of said driving member, in said cup and arranged to be expanded -thereagainst, said coil spring having inturned ends engaging in therecess in said driving member upon opposite sidesv of said projection.
