application nled March 5, 1996, Serial lto. 99,4197?, and in Germany September lt, 1995.
My invention relates to circular grinding or polishing machines and has for its ohject the provision of means for imparting an axial to-and-ro movement oi small amplitude to u the grinding disc or wheel.
1n circular grinding machines in which the grinding wheel is not moved past the work during the grinding operation, but in which the whole oit the surface to he ground is opl@ erated upon within the range of the'hreadth ol the grinding wheel it is very advantageous to give a short to-and-tro motion to the grinding wheel.
My invention consists ina simple and relild ahle device for ohtaining the said to-and-ro motion which l accomplish hy movin@n 'the grinding wheel spindle to-and-li'ro axially hy means of at least one oscillating lever, the oscillation or which is produced hy the grind- 29 ing wheel spindle itseli.
My invention is illustrated hy way ol er ample on the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation and Figure 2 a transverse section, the left-hand 2t hall ot this hgure showing a section along t@ ries a worm 2, which drives a worm wheel 3. 'llhe latter is mounted von a shaft 4l which is provided with eccentric pins 5' and is journalled in a trame t., 'lhe eccentric pins 5 on the shalt Il are engaged hy single-armed os- 3a cillating levers 8 mounted on/a shalt. l which is likewise journalled in the trame 6.. "llhese oscillating levers d are connected hy means ot links 9 to a ring 10.
lln a here oil the spindle 1, a slidahle holt to 11 rests with which a ring 12 is connected hy means ol a pin 19. Sjrlots 141 are provided in the spindle 1 toA allow ci the 'lree passage ol the pin 13. ,d second ring is lined on the spindle 1 hy means'ol anut 16. The ring 10 latter act as stops.. 1n or er to prevent the ring 10 trom turning with the rings 12 and 13, it may he held hy guide armsll which are mounted on a shalt 19 also tu hearing lirmly tired to the framework ol ich journalled in the the machine and thus acts to prevent undesired axial movement oi the spindle 1. 'lhe mechanical connection of the two stops 12 and 19 prevents the possihility or errors in operating the machine. 'lhe holt 11 and the spindle 1 are connected Withone another hy means ol: a dierential nut 21, so that hy a turn or this nut 21, the holt 11 and the rings 12 and 19 connected with it are moved in an axial direction relative to the spindle 1.
lln the position shown in the drawing, the to-and-iro motion or the spindle 1 is eliminated, as is necessary for instance for grinding shouldered work. lin this case the ring 12 has been caused hy movement of the holt 11 to the left to move so far away from the stop ring 15, that the ring 10 can move lreely between the stops 12 and 15 without carrying the spindle 1 with it. Moreover through the turning of the diderential nut 21, the ring 19 has heen firmly pressed against the xed hall bearing 20 so that the spindle 1 is prevented from moving axially in one direction hy the ring 19 and in the other by a shoulder on said spindle engaging the other side ot said hearing 20.
1n order that to-and-rro motion ol the grinding wheel comes into action, the diderential nut 21 is turned in the opposite direction wherehy the ring 12 is brought so much nearer to the ring 15, that the ring 10 engages one ofthe stop rings, 12 or 15, in each direction and consequently is compelled to carry the spindle 1 with it in the movement imparted to it hy the oscillating lever 8. By the movement oit the holt 11 to the right, the ring 19 is alsoiseparated from the hearing 2O permitting the .spindle 1 to move..
ll claim:
1. lln a circular grinding machine or the like, a machine frame, a reciprocable grinding wheel spindle mounted therein, a lever pivotally mounted in said machine frame, means operatively connected to said spindle and engaging said lever for imparting oscillating movement thereto, and means transfering oscillating movement or said lever to said spindle, said means comprising adjustable mechanism on said Shaft lor regulating the extent ol the movement imparted to said spindle,
' 2.. ln a circular grinding machine or the like, a machine iframe, a reciprocahle grinding wheel spindle mounted therein, a lever pivotally mounted in said machine trame, means operatively connected to said spindle and engaging said lever for imparting oscillating movement thereto, and means transferring oscillat-ing movement of said lever to said spindle, said means comprising adjustable mechanism on said shaft for regulating the extent of the movement imparted to said spindle, and additional means for lc cking the spindle against endWise displacement.
3. In the structure included in claim 2, said movement transferring means comprising a coupling ring.
4. In a circular grinding machine or the like, a machine frame, a reciprocable grinding wheel spindle mounted therein, means for reciprocating said spindle comprising a lever pivotally mounted in said machine frame, a crank shaft operatively connected to said spindle and engaging said lever for imparting oscillatory movement thereto, a stop on said spindle, a pin mounted for movement axially of said spindle, a stop on said pin, and a coupling ring operatively connected to said lever and positioned between said stops.
5. In combination with the structure included in claim 4, means for rendering said reciprocating means inoperative comprising a stop carried by said pin and engageable with said machine frame.
