Description

GI'M'EACUM. CatameniaI-Sack.
No, 168,515, Patented 0ct.5 ,1875.
N. PETERS. FRQYO-LITHOGRAPHER WASHING UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE MEACOM, OF BEVERLY, 'MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT lN` CATAMENIAL SACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,515, dated October 5, 1875 application led september e, 1875.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gunner: MEAcoM, of Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oatamenial Sacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, 'such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being .had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification. l
My invention has for its object to produce a catamenial sack, and is intended to improve upon the Letters Patent granted W. A. Dinsmore, July 26, 1870, which aforesaid patent embodies in its construction au outer and inner sack, with a space between the two, and an opening at the bottom ot the inner one, the two being united at their eX- treme upper edges, and having a strip of sponge attached upon their upper edges. This construction and arran gement I disclaim, as it is not my invention.
In my invention I employ an inner and outer sack, the inner sack having an opening at the bottom, as usual, and as shown in the aforesaid patent of W. A. Dinsmore.
My invention consists in constructing the outer sack with a stiffening-roll around its extreme upper edge, Within which sack is arranged an interior sack, the said two sacks being united at a considerable distance below their upper edges, having a projecting iiexible lip at the edge of the aforesaid sack,
- thus leaving a recess for holding a welt of brous material, which is secured to the projecting free lip of the inner sack, so as to move therewith and partake of the action of the body when walking, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
The stiffening-roll on the outer sack serves to keep the mouth of the same properly distended, while the inner iiexible projecting lip, with the attached sponge, will form an elastic bearing against the portion of the body to which the sack is attached, which will yield to the motions of the muscles and the various movements of the wearer, and,
at the same time, make a close connection or joint.
On the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention, and Fig. 2 represents a cross-section ot' the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts Whereever they occur on the dift'eren-t parts of the drawings.-
a represents the outer sack, and b represents the inner one, with its opening c in the usual manner. The upper edge of the outer sack a is made rounded, as a roll, d, thus dispensing with the tlat surface heretofore used, which was very apt to heat and chafe the body of the wearer. The round edge d imparts a certain stiffness to the sack where it connects with the body, and I am thus enabled to produce a very tight connection between the sack and the body, without chating or irritating the latter. To further produce a very close lit I make a projecting elastic lip, c, all around the upper part of the inner sack b, to which I attach, by means of stitches or otherwise, a soft and porous welt or band, f, made of sponge, felt, or suitable material.
To the front and rear of the outer sack a, is attached the central bands or straps g h, by means of which the sack can be secured in front and rear to a suitable waistband. To the sides of `the said outer sack a are secured'the bands or straps 11 i k 7a, by means of which the sack is secured to the upper parts of the limbs of the wearer, so as to be able to keep the sack in its proper and extended position when in use.
Buttons, buckles, Src., or similar well-known devices, may be used on the straps for the purpose of securing the sack in its proper position. s v
Having thus fully described the nature and construction of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim- As an improvement in that class of catamenial sacks which embody an inner and an outer sack, and a iibrous material upon the edge Where they are united, the combination of the outer sack, having a roll at its extreme upper edge, With the inner sack unitef In testimony that I claim the foregoing.
To the outer sack at a distance below its up- I have hereunto set my hand this26th day per edge, to form a flexible projecting lip, of August, 1875.
whereby a seat is formed between the lip and GEORGE MEAGOM. the roll to receive the brous material which Witnesses: is attached to the lip of the inner sack, sub- ALBAN ANDRN,
stantially as herein shown and described. F. E. MEAGOM.
