PATENT OFFICE.
NIKITAS LAPPAS, OF PEABODY, MASSACHUSETTS.
FORTUNE-TELLING DEVICE.
Application filed December 5, 1927. Serial No. 237,840.
The invention aims to provide a new and improved toy in the nature of a fortune telling device, so constructed that the operator may without detection, cause a pointer to point toward any selected one of a plurality of legends.
in carrying out the above end, it IS a iurther object of the invention to provide a device which may be compactly nested when not in use and readily carried within a garment pocket.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device set up for use.
Fig. 2 is a disassembled perspective view.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the relation of parts when nested.
In the drawing above briefly described, the numeral 4 denotes a lower bearing for a vertical shaft 6, said shaft being preferably formed of wire and having a pointed lower end 7 resting in the bearing. Suitably at tached to the bearing t, are a number of strips 8 of tape or other flexible material, said strips being disposed in radial relation with the bearing and being provided at their outer ends with legends 9. The shaft is provided with a lateral pointer for co-operation with the legends 9 and it will be seen that by slightly tilting the shaft 5, even though to an infinitesimal extent, the pointer is made to act by gravity to effect turning of said shaft. Thus, the operator may cause the pointer 10 to point to or overlie any of the legends 9 which he may wish.
An upperbearing 11 is provided for the shaft 5 and in order to properly manipulate this bearing for tilting said shaft, it is preferably disposed at the outer end of an arm 12 w iich projects laterally from a see .nd shaft 13, this second shaft being provided with a pointed lower end or bearing 14% to rest upon the same support as that which supports the bearing f, the strips 8 and the legends 9. The upper end of the shaft 12 is to be held by hand and it may well be provided with a lateral handle 15. By manipulating shaft 13 in one manner or another, arm 12 and bearing 11 are caused to tilt the shaft 5 in one direction or another, thus controlling the movements of the pointer 10. l
The shaft 13 is of'hollow form to retain all other parts of the device when they are disassen'ibled. In this connection, attention is invited to the following :The arm 10 is detachablyconnected at 16 with the shaft 5, the arm 12 passes rcmovably through slots 17 in the shaft 13, and the handle passes removably through an opening 18 in a plug 19 for the upper end of the shaft 13. Hence, the parts may be readily disassembled and the shaft 13 used asencasing means for the other parts as shown in Fig. Preferably, a. loop 20 is connected with the bearing 4 for use in withdrawing this bearing and connected parts from the shaft 13, and ifdesired, this loop may be held between the wall of the shaft and the plug 19, when the parts are in the nested relation shown in Fig. 1. Thus, the
loop is in readiness for pulling the parts a s-9 out of the shaft 13, upon removal of the plug. Upon inverting the shaft- 13, the other parts will slide by gravity therefrom.
The details disclosed are preferably followed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, variations may be made.
I claim:
l. A fortune telling device comprising a lower bearing, a vertical shaft resting on said bearing, a pointer projecting laterally from said shaft, spaced legends co-operable with said pointer, and a manually movable upper bearing for said shaft operable to tilt the latter in any direction to cause said pointer to act by gravity and turn the shaft.
2. A fortune telling device comprising a lower bearing, a vertical shaft resting on said bearing, a pointer projecting laterally from said shaft, spaced legends co-operable with said pointer, a second shaft having a bearing at its lower end upon which it may be manu ally tilted in any direction, and an arm projecting from said second shaft, said arm having an upper bearing for the first named shaft.
A structure as specified in claim 2; said second shaft being of hollow form to house all other parts of the device when not in use.
4;. Astructure as specified in claim 1; together with flexible strips carrying said legends, said strips being attached to said lower bearing and radiating therefrom.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
