PATENT OFFICE.
UNITED STATES- WALTER V. KRAFT, F CLINTON, ILLINOIS.
WATER Application filed February The invention relates to improvements in devices for heating water and While the primary intent of such device is for use in connection with a heating radiator and water circulating pipes, it is obvious that said heater might be employed for other purposes.-
It is the object of the invention to provide a new and improved construction for a water heater in which novel provision is made tor outwardly deflecting products of combustion to points atwhich they will perform additional work, before they are permitted to escape.
With the foregoing in view, the invent on resides in the novel subject matter here nafter described and claimed, the descript on being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Fig. l is a vertical sectional view through a water heater as indicated by line 1-1 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view at right angles to Fig. 1, as denoted by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
1n the drawing above briefly described,-
the numeral 3 designates a suitable chamber adapted to contain a gas burner 4 or other desired flame producing means. Around this chamber, is a shell 5, a water space 6 being provided between said chamber and shell. This space 6 may be provided with any desired inlet and outlet means 78, for the water to be heated.
Whiter circulating tubes 9 which are preferably of the shape shown in 1, are disposed within and secured to the cha i'nbers, the lower portions of saldtubes being disposed over the burner l, while the upper portions of said tubes are disposed vertically and arranged in two parallel rows. Thetubes 9 communicate at their opposite ends-with relatively low and high portions of the water heating space 6 and they assist materially in permitting rapid heating of the water.
An outlet pipe 10 is provided tor the products O'l'i'COlllbl'lStlOll, said pipe extending horizontally across the upper portion or the chamber 3, between the above-named parallel rows of vertical tube portions. The lower side of the pipe 10 is imperforate and serves as a battle to outwardly deflect the rising products of combustion against the upper ends of the tubes 9 and toward the side Wall of the chamber 3, insuring that maximum heating effi- HEATER.

ciency be attained from these products of combustion before they escape. The upper portion or the pipe 10 is formed with means, however, for admitting the products of coin bustion to said pi pe, after they have lost most of their heating efliciency. This means is preferably in the form of a longitudinal slot 11, which may be formed by cutting away substantially the upper half 01 the pipe 10. This pipe is shown provided with a closed end 12 within the chamber 3 and with an up turned end 18 at the exterior of said chamber, connected with an appropriate vent pipe is.
Preferably, a metal jacket 15 is provided arouijid the shell 5, and the space between said jacket andshell may be packed. with asbestos 16 or other desired insulating.material.
By providing the novel construction shown and described, or a substantial equivalent thereof, a rather simple and inexpensive, yet an efficient and very desirable water heater is produced. Hence, the details disclosed are preferably followed. However, within the scope of the invention as claimed, variations may be made.
I claim In a water heater, a chamber to contain flame producing means, a water-containing shell spaced around said chamber, water tubes in said chamber comn'iunicating with the interior of said shell, said tubes having vertical upper portions disposed in two spaced parallel rows within the chamber, the lower portions of one row of tubes being curved outwardly in one direction toward one side of said chamber and the lower portions of the other row being curvedoutwardly in the opposite direction from and between the curved. lower portions o'l the l'irst mentioned, row, and an outlet pipe for the products of combustion extending horizontally across the upper end or" said chamber and disposedbetween said rows of vertical tube portions, said pipe having an imperfoi'ate lower portion to deflect. the products of combustion outwardly against said vertical tube portions, the upper portion of said pipe having means for adn'iitting the products of combustion.
In testimony whereotl have hereunto affixed my signature.
IVALTER V. KRAFT.
