The case shift mechanism comprises a. pair of spaced-off rods 21 rigid with the typewriter carriage base 15 and extending at right angles to the plane thereof and inclined from VJtlClll, as shown, at an angle of about 20 degrees to extend parallel to the segment plate. The rods 21 are pivoted as at to pair of the levers 3i rigidly connected together to form a frame roclcablc about an axis 32 near the rear of the machine, one of said levers having a. depression 33 coacting with a tongue 26 at the rear end ofthe usual shift key lever 27 which is pivoted to one side frame as at 28. The rods 2]. are preferably guided in roller bearings 29 to permit elevation of the carriage for case shifting, with a minimum of friction.
The universal bar comprises an arcuate member-42 xtending immediately below and assembled ti) the inclined segment plate 43,
which is mounted at an inclination to the vertical, parallel to the case shift rods 21. The universal bar is an ported in a, special manner to reduce the rictional losses to a minimum and to elminatc inaccuracies resulting from Wear. For this purpose, I provide 9. support bracket 44, Fig. 2, preferably secured as by screws 44- to the segment plate 48 and having a pair of parallel arms 45 and idextending rearward and connected by n bar 47. In the preferred embodiment, the suspension comprises a' rocker formed of a pair of parallel links 48 and 49, depending res ec'tivcly from bracket arms 45 and 46 an rigidly connected by a cross bar 50. A pair 0 separate and distinctlinks 51 and 52 are ivoted to the rearward or free ends of br'ac et arms 45 and 46. The universal bar is formed with integral arms 54 and 53 extending rearward from the ercuatc se meat 42 thereof, and supported respective y from bracket arms 45 and .46 by pai'fallel links 48 and 51 and links 49 and 52. ,IfThe escapement and, associated mechniiisms assen mounted on'the carriage base plate extend into the free space thus provided back of the segment plate and between the universal bar supporting limits, as will be more fully described hereinafter. The universal bur, as will be hereinafter described, has separate elements for initiating a. plurality of separate and distinct operations-oi the machine. It will he seen that in operation of the uuivcrsal bar, the same moves by a parallel link movement, the links advancing, and returning by movement parallel to each other. The displacementof the universal bar is by movement strictly parallel to itself without engenderin'g appreciable friction or wear.
The pivot pins and 71'i'or the escape mentmechanism are mounted respectively in an angle bar 72 secured to the base plate 15 of the carriage, and n backiu bar 7 3 bolted to said angle bar, and affording a working space 73 'tlicrebetween for accommodating said escapement mechanism. stepping escapement dogs 74 and 75, respectively, also are disposed between angle bar 72 and hacking bar 73, pivots 77 and 7-8 supporting the fixed dog-74 by cars 76 formed integrally therewith. Spring 7e urges dog 75 to an elevated posi-. tion limited by tongue 83 on fixed dog 74. The carriage motor (not shown) urges the stepping dog 75 downward against the resistance or spring 74;, tongue 83 on said dog limiting said movement by-vjits engagement with the edge of fixed dog 74. The escn )emcnt dogs 74 and 75 are thus disposed wit rin the space determined by bracket arms 45 and 4G and arms 53 and 54, as will appear clearly from 'Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. The escapement mechanism includes the usual escapement pinion 79 enmeshed with rack 80 on the carriage. position, the spring 82 vibrates the fixed dog, to release the tooth and positions the stepping dog to intercept the next advancing tooth of the wheel, and the carriage spring drum overcomes the resistance of spring 74, and advances the escapcment wheel through a distance of one tooth limited by contact of tongue 83' on the dog 75 with 111E upper edge of the fixed dog 74.
The escapemcnt wheel 81 is freely mounted upon the support shaft 84, but is connected through spring pawl to the ratchet wheel 86, rotatable as a rigid unit with the pinion 79 upon the common axis of said elements. Advance thus takes place by the rotation of pinion 79 through rack 80 and with it of ratchet wheel 86. the latter effecting rotation of the escapement wheel 81 through the pawl 85, as above described.
The ribhon-vibrating mechanism is preterably mounted on the carriage base plate rather than on the frame. Thrrihbon 101 is held in the usual ribbon-carrier 103 and adjacent the platen and below the typing lino thereon. The vibration of the ribbon for raising it to printing position ellecteil through a linkage attached to the shiflahlc carriage base plate in the path of movement of the universal bar and extending. as indicated in the drawings, under the universal bar between the latter and the key levers. so that the mechanism does not add materially to the over-all heightof the machine. The linkage comprises a rocker 105 having integral ears 106 pivoted as at 107 in yoke bracket 108, the latter secured to the rear of the backing bar 73, which is secured on the carriage-base plate as heretofore described. Integral with rocker 105 is a ribbon-viln-at ing arm 109 extending forward therefrom and terminating adjacent the segment plate 43 to pivotally support the ribbon-carrier 1103 at its free end. The rocker 10; may he provided with' an arm extending upward therefrom into the path of a nose 111 projecti'ng at the rear of a bridge member 1341 which latter may be riveted as at 135 to the ends of the arcuate universal bar 42. Al-
though this lever arm may be formed with a Fdixed poin'tlo be engaged by the nose 111 in order to-raise the ribbon through a tixcd range at each operation, I have shown an arrangement providing or two alternative degrees of elevation of the ribbon and par ticularly useful for a two-color ribbon shift mechanism, and all'ording a third setting out of the path of operation of the universal bar .l'or stencil writing. In the preferred embodiment shown, the rocker 105 has mounted thereon a shift plate 112 provided with an elongated slot 113 secured to the rocker 10! by screws 114 extending through the slot 113 and threaded into said rocker 105. "The shift plate 112 carries a pair of integral upstanding tongues 115 and 116 of dilferent heights, having forwardly projecting ends 117, either of which tongue ends may be brought into the path of the long nose 111 of the universal bar by corresponding shift 01 the plate 112 along the screws 114.
A spring 119 secured to the rocker 105 forms a detent to snap into any one of three notches 121 121 and 121 in the shift plate 112, for accurately positioning the same in any setting, the central of said notches corresponding to stencil setting in which both tongues 115 and 116 are maintained outof the path of the nose 111 of the universal bar and the ribbon is not vibrated. Notches 121 and 121 correspond to the two operative or ribbon vibrating settings, in which tongues 115 and 116 respectively are in the path of said nose 111 of the universal bar. Stops 123 and 124 are provided upon yohe bracket 1.08 for limiting the displacement of the tongues 115 and 116 respectively, and these stops may be set screws, as shown.
In the preferred embodiment, the usual shit't'lever (not shown) may be employed to set the shift plate 112 and the two tongues 115i and 116 relatively to the nose 111 through connecting parts including a link 160 (Fig. 5).
It will be seen that the ribbon vibrating linkage atlords substantial multiplication of ribbon displacing motion predetermined by the height of the tongues 115 and 11.6 actu ated by the universal bar. Therefore, the elevation of the ribbon will be substantially greater than the shift of the universal bar. The ribbon vibrating mechanism, however, does not add substantially to the bulk of the machine. since the linkage is fitted into spaces otherwise unoccupied below the platen to the rear of the universal bar and between the latter and above thekey levers.
It will be readily understood that when the longer tongue 115 is shifted to lie in the path of nose 111 ot the universal bar, the ribbon-viinating arm 109 will be shifted by the operation of the universal bar through a lesser range about its pivot 107 than when the shorter tongue 116 is presented to said 'nose.
More particularly in foreign languages, there is occasion to type certain auxiliary marks, such accents. unilauts and cedillas. in the same space with the usual letters. With the ordinary typewriter, it necessary aiter printing a letter to operate the back space key in order to r e-align for then printing the auxiliary character in the same space. According to my invention, 1 arrange certain keys that correspond to the auxiliary marks to .etlect the regular universal bar operationrbut to cut out the operation of the escapement.
For this purpose, the thrust from the universal bar to the escapeinent dogs 74 and 75 may he transmitted through an interposed type-bars and counectible to the escapement I mechanism at eithercase-shiftpositionthercor intermediary piece 125 normally maintained in place but automatically removed while one of the said non-escapement keys is depressed, so that the universal bar will operate all of the control mechanism in the normal fashion with the exception only of the cscapemcnt mechanism.
In the preferred specific embodiment, the universal bar bridge member 134 provided With'an escapement operating tongue 126 cooperative with a long lever 127 pivoted as at 128 near one side of the machine and formed with a tongue 129, the end of which constitutes the intei'poncnt 125, normally main- I tained interposed between the tongue 126 on the universal bar and the cseapement dog 74, so that in normal operation, the thrust is transmitted therethrough to the escapement dogs from the tongue 126 on the uni versal bar. The said. non-cscapcmcnt keys are preferably connected to lever 127 by links such as 130 and 131 fitting in corresponding notches 132 in the lever, so that. upon depression of an} of said keys, the lever 12? will be depressed about its pivot; against the resistance of spring 133 to remove piece 125 from between the universal har tongue 126 and the dog 74, so that in the continued movement of the key as the printing occurs and the universal bar is shifted, the shit t of tongue 126 on the latter will take place in the gap left in advance thereof by the removal of the interposed element 125, where fore the escapement dog will not he vihratcd and the carringewill not be advanced.

In a portable typcwriting machine, the -omhination with a carriage having an oscapcment' mechanism, and a segment sup- Pulling a series of type-bars, of means actuated by all the type-bars and operatively conneetihle to the cscapcment mechanism to letter-space the carriage, said means including a curved universal bar having a pair of rcarwardlyrejecting Widely-spaced tongues. a pair 0 links pivotally' supporting each tongue, and a pair of brackets vertically aligned to said tongues and secured to the rear of the segment to support the links, the brackets, links and tongues jointly forming: side walls of an open space within whichthe escapement mechanism is positioned close to the segment for a condensed assembly of the parts.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination with acarriage having an escapcment mechanism shiftable therewith to case-shift position and a series of type-bars assembled upon a stationary segment, of means mounted upon the segment to be actuated by the of, said means including a curved member engageableby the type-bars, and a bridge member secured to the ends of the curved member, said bridge-member having connec tions to convey the movement of the type bar-actuated curved member to the same part of the escapcnient mechanism, at either caseshift position of the carriage.
3. In a typcwriting machine, the combinetion with a carriage having an escapcment mechanism shiftablc therewith to case-shiftand an intermediary member engageahie by said tongue and operative to uniformly ii-- brain the same part of the cscapement mech- :misnt at either cnse-shift position thereof llt'l'l a type-bar is actuated.
4. In a typcwriting machine, the combination with a carriage having a carriagefeeding nn-ehanism and a series of type-liars assembled upon a segment, of means swing ably mounted at the rear of the segment and poised between the type-bars and the escapemcnt mechanism, said means including a curved universal bar operative by the bars, and a cross-bar to bridge the the curved bar, said cross-bar having a tongue operable to engage the carriage-iceding mechanism at each vactuation of the uni-- vcrsal bar by a type-bar.
5. In a typewriting machine including a carriage having a platen. a ribbon-carrier operative to present a ribbon to the typing line of the platen, a carriage-escapement mechanism, and a series of type-bars assembled upon a segment, the combination of means swingably mounted upon the segment to be operated by type-bars and operative to actuate the carriagc-escapement mechanism and vibrato the ribbon-carrier to cover the typing position upon the platen, said means including a curved universal bar 1 cable by the typc-bars, and a bridgeher secured to the universal bar, said member including a tongue operative to vibrate the escapement mechanism, and
an; extension operative to vibrate the ribboncarrier at each actuation of the universal liar by a type-bar.
6. In a typevvritinr machine including a carriage having a platen, a ribbon-carrier operative to present the ribbon to the typ" ing position on the platen, ribbon-spools operative to feed the ribbon through the rib- "oon-carrier, a carria-ge-escapement mechanism, and a series of type-bars assembled upon a segment, the combination 01 means swingably mounted upon the segment to be operated by the type-bars and operative to jointly actuate the carriage-escapement and vibrate the ribbon-carrier to the printing position and rotate a ribbon-spool to feed the ribbon, said means including a curved uni-- versal lJZll operable by the type-bars and a cross-bar to bridge the ends of the uniyersal bar, said crossbar at each end having connections operable to feed a ribbonspool, a tongue adjacent the center thereof operable to engage the carriageescapementto feed the carriage, and an. extension op-- native to vibrate the rihbon-carrier at each actuation of a type-bar.
7. In a portable typewriting machine, the combination with a base-frame having a seg ment-plate secured thereto for pivotally supporting a series of typebars and a caseshifting frame to support a platen-carriage and an escapement-mechanism for the carriage, of a universal bar curved about the stationary segme11t-plate to be operated by the type-bars and formed with extens ons that project rearWardly-at each side of the cscapementmechanism to provide a working clearance space between them for the rise and fall of said escapement-mechanism in case-shifting, and means for pivotally securing said universal bar as a unit to the rear of the stationary segment for a swinging parallel motion between the type-bars and the eseapemenbmechanisni to uniformly actuate the latter at any case-shift posit-ion thereof.

In a portable typewriting machine, the combination with a base-frame having a segment-plate secured thereto for pivotally snuporting a series of type-bars and a case-shi ting frame to support a platen-carriage and an escapementmechanism for the carriage, of a universal bar curved about the stationary segment-plate to be operated by the typebars and formed with. extensions that project re arwardly at each side of the escapementmechanism to provide a Working clearance space between them for the rise and fall of said escapcmenj' mechanism in caseshifting, means for pivotally securing said universal bar a unit to the rear of the stationary segment for a. swinging parallel motion between the type-bars and the escapcmentmechanism, and an ear integral with the uni-,
vcrsal bar and having a one-Way connection operative to uniformly vibrate the escape mom-mechanism at any case-shift position thereof.

In a portable typewriting machine, the combinations-nth a base-frame having a segment-plate lined thereto for suporting a series of type -bars, and a case-shift frame shiftably mounted upon said base-frame and supportin r a platcn-carriage and an escapemcnt-mec anism therefor, of a universal bar curved around said segment-plate and pivotally mounted at the rear thereof for a swinging parallel motion when actuated by the type-bars, said universal bar including an open frai'ne-worlr to afford a Working clvu.rance-space for the case-shifting movement of the escapenlent-mechanism positinned close to the rear of the segment for a compact assembly of the parts and also provide long bearing supports for the universal bar at each side of the escapementmechanism.
