UNITED sra rss PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE J. HEBNER, OF ROGHESTER, NEW YORK.
FASTENING DEVICE FOR LADDERS. A
Application filed March 19, 1927; Serial No. 176,794.
This invention relates to attachments for a ladder with a rigidly secured hook adapt ed to be hooked'over the ridge of the roof to support the ladder against slippage in its inclined position. Such construction, however is open to many objections, one of them being the fact that the sustaining weight is applied to one ooint, and often breaks the shingles; Fur more it is exceedingly awkward to handie and it prevents the use of the ladder in other locations.
It is therefore one of the objects of the present invention to provide attachments or devices which may be easily and quickly applied to ordinary ladders where :1 they may be used on roofs without danger of slippage.
A further object is to provide a device of the above general character which not only prevents longitudinal slippage of the ladder but also lateral movement.
A further object is to provide a device of the above character which may be easily and quickly applied to or removed from ladders as and when necessary.
Other objects will be inpart obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out in connection with the accompanyingsheet of drawings illustrating one of -various possible embodiments of the inventionand in the several views of which corresponding reference charactors denote similar. parts:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of in operative position.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the re taining means.
Referring now to the drawings in detail the ladder and more particularly Figure 1, A indicates a ladder of standard construction provided with the usual rounds B, the end rounds of which may be provided with extensions pro ectmg oeyono the side rails A 1f desired for engaging recesses C in the attachments hereinafter described. These attachments each comprise a U-shaped body member Gr adapted to embrace the side rail A and pro-- vided at its relatively outer side with a thumb screw F, by means of which the members G may be firmly clamped to the side rails. Two downwardly extending lugs D and E, one longitudinal and the other transverse with respect to the side rail project fromthe under side of the body member G- to engage the roof. When the parts are assembled, as shown in Figure 1, the ladderv may be laid. upon a sharply inclined roof H,
and each of the projections bites into. the
roof and thus aid in supporting vthe entire weight of the ladder and the person work.- ing thereupon without serious danger of slipping or injuring the shingles'of the roof. After use, the attachment may be easily and quickly removed from the ladder by simply'loosening the various screws F.
It will be understood that when used with ladders having projecting rounds at the top and bottom as shown in Figure 1,'the rounds co-ac't with the curved recesses or cut-out portions C in the sides of the body members in such a manner as to prevent any pivotal movement of the attachment about the thumbscrews.
It is to be seen that the present invention provides a simple and practical attachment for ladders, particularly adapted to accomplish among othersall of the objects and at vantages herein set forth.
I claim: 7 p
In a device of the character dcscribech in combination with a ladder having side rails and rounds, a substantiallyti-shaped body member havingcut-ont portions in its sides and a round thereof to prevent relative movement of the ladder and body member v and an auxiliary attaching means for pre.
venting such relative movement compris i at I thereby to embrace a side rail of the ladder projections on its under side for engaging a Roof. i 1
In witness whereof l have signed my name.
