UNITED STATES SAMUEL LOVENWIRTH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MACHINE FOR APPLYING PASTE TO PAPER SHEETS.
Application filed June 4,
The object of this invention is to provide a machine for applying paste longitudinally of a paper strip or sheet being unwound from a roll of paper, the adhesive material being ap: plied in a well defined path, near one edge of the strip.
A further object is to produce this result by employing a particular arrangement of rolls, receptacles, and mounting devlces, the paste receptacle containing the roll for applying adhesive material being detachable from the remainder of the structure.
A further object is to provide for guiding the sheets of paper with reference to the rolls.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming part of this application,
Figure 1 shows the device in side elevation, a port-ion of the roll of paper being broken away.
Figure 2 shows the roll in elevation.
Figure 3 is an elevation of a portion of the structure on which the paper roll is to be mounted, this View showing the cooperation between the two detachable sections of the device.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the machine, or the major portion thereof, the standards for supporting the paper roll being in horizontal section.
Figure 5 is a view partly in elevation and partly in vertical section, showing the relation of the principal rolls over which the paper strip is designed to pass.
Figure 6 is a section transversely of the receptacle adapted to contain paste, and thru two of the rolls, the latter appearing in top plan at the right of Figure 4.
A roll of paper to which paste or other adhesive material is to be applied, is designated 10, this roll being carried by a shaft or spindle 11 mounted in socket members or bearings such as 12 carried by the standards 13.
A frame or receptacle 15 serves to mount paste receptacle and the standards 13, the latter being secured 1926. Serial No. 113,740.
in order to hold the sheet of paper taut, as the latter passes under the roller, and roll or roller 20 is usually of wood, and the sheet passes from the lower side of roller 18 to the upper surface of roller 20. These rollers 18 and 20 are journaled in the side walls, or in bearings in the side walls of the frame or receptacle 15.
A detachable receptacle, usually of sheet metal, is designated 22, and mounts within suitable guiding elements the rollers 24 and 25, the latter being in a chamber 26 which may be empty, and roll or roller 24 being mounted in a paste container 27, it being the intention that the paste shall be applied by roller 24 to the surface of the sheet of paper, near one edge thereon, the width of the surface thus treated being two inches, depending however on the dimensions of the roll 24 which may be employed for a given purpose.
Roll or rollers 24 and 25 include axial members 28 and 29, mounted in vertical guides such as 30, and each roller carries an outer metallic sleeve or ring such as 31, the roller per se being preferably of wood.
The paper strip or sheet is to pass under guides 35 and 36, and between these elements and guides 37 and 38, the latter extending transversely of the receptacle 22 and above the upper portion thereof, the projecting ends being secured to brackets 39 and 40. A frame connected with the upper edge portion of receptacle 22 includes the side members 41 and 42, and the latter are adapted for connection with the structure 15, in the manner shown particularly in Figures 1 and 2. Slots 43 in side bars 41 and 42 permit of engagement by thumb screws 44, passing into the vertical walls of structure 15. Other securing devices are designated 45, and these pass thru corresponding elements.
It will be understood that it is only necessary to cause the sheet of paper to travel over the rollers 20, 24 and 25, in order to apply the paste along one edge of the sheet as before indicated, the guides insuring sufficiently close contact with the upper surface of roll or roller 24. In this operation roller 25 is used only as an additional guide.
After the paper leaves the machine, the gummed or pasted margin is attached to a cardboard tube, on which fabric is to be wound. The roller is mounted on a suitable device for imparting rotary movement thereto, the end of the goods being inserted between the roller and that portion of the paper strip carrying no adhesive material, thus providing as the rolling operation commences, for holding the end of the fabric With reference to the roller.
Having described the invention What is claimed is In a device of the class described, a structure for supporting a roll of paper, sheet guiding means mounted in said structure. a receptacle detachably connected with said structu 'e, the receptacle including a paste compartment, and an independent compartment, rollers mounted ffOl'l'OtiLtlOHflHd for vertical movement in these compartments, means for connecting the aforesaid structure and detachable receptacle, and paper guiding devices each comprising upper and lower plates arranged in pairs, the plates of one pair extending across the adjacent edges of the structure supporting the paper roll and the detachable receptacle, and being secured to the coi'inectingmeans for these elements.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
SAMUEL LOVENWIRTIH.
