t In the use of rounding machines organized as set forth in said Letters `Patent a blank from which a sole is to be eut is placed upon a horizontally disposed pattern vwhile the parts of the machine are at rest and the blank is held in position by means of a presser meinber or clamp plate which is brought into engagement with the flat upper surface of the blank through the operation or' a foot treadle and presses the blank tirmly against the pattern. TWhen the blank has been thus properly positioned and clamped, driving mechanism for causing a knife to travel around the pattern is' throwninto`op eration by the Vmanual shifting ot a starting or shipping lever. Consequently, elevation of the rod 42 causes the arm 46 to be rocked about its fulcrum point 48 to depress the lpressure applying member 14, causing the latter to move toward theV pattern 10. The extent of movement of the pressure applying member 14 toward the pattern and consequently the amount of pressure applied by said member toV a blank upon the pattern will vary according to the extent to Which the treadle 16 is depressed.
lt-Will be seen that the operative is free to depress the treadle 16 and release 'it as often as he Vdesires while positioning the blank 12 upon the pattern 10, and to assist in raising the treadle 1G from its depressed position a spring 5 2 may be extended between a fined lug 54 and the ar1n46. rThis spring provides resilient means to move the treadle to inoperative position and, in the absence ofany means to lock the'treadle down, it would be necessary for the operative of the machine to hold the treadle d epressed to insure that the pressure applying member should press the blank 12 against the pattern 1() during the sole rounding operation.
As herein illustrated, however, provision is made for locking the treadle in depressed position and to this end a segmental ratchet member-,5G is secured upon the side of the treadle arm 20. A spring-pressed pavvl 58 is locatedV immediately above `the ratchet 56 and is pivot-.ed at 6() to the machine frame, rlhis pawvl 58 is made in three sections, a, and `c, each of which may be moved downwardly independently of the remaining parts and each of which is provided with an actuating spring (Fig. 3) tending normally to produce such downward movement. The parvis c, Z) and c are arranged with their ratchet-engaging teeth staggered so as to securea very fine adjustment of the treadle.
Locking of the treadle in depressed position is effected by movement of the paivl 58 into engagement with the ratchet 56 while the treadle occupies a depressed position and this movement of the pawl is made dependent upon the throwing into operation of the sole rounding mechanism. `To this end a starting or shipping lever 62, for controlling the sole rounding mechanism` is AInovable betiveen either of the tivo positions illustrated by full and dotted lines in Fig. 1. The starting lever 62 is provided witha depending arm G4, the lower extremityvof kwhich carries a roll 68 for engagement with a cam member G8 fnedly secured to a rock shaft 70. The rock shaft 70 is so connectedI with the actuating mechanism of the sole rounding mechanism that movement of the handle 62 to an operative position (illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 1), causing a slight upward movement of the cam arm'88 and arslight rotation ofthe rock shaft 7 O, throws the actuating mechanism into operation to commence the travel of the knife around the pattern. When the operating handle 62 is moved into an operative position it is .held there throughout the sole rounding operation by means of a flat surface 72 formed on a forward project-ion 74 of the lever moving into a locking position beneath a finger formed on a latch 76 (Fig. 4). il fixed stop 78 is carried by the machine and a spring 80, one extremity of Which engages the stop 78 and the opposite extremity of which rfits Within a pocket 82 formed Within the latch v76, tends to move the latch 7 G about its pivot 84 to maintain the finger of the latch in locked engage.- ment with the lever 62. The latch 78 for the starting lever 62 is provided with a hooked projection 88 which is to be used by the operative of the machine in manually releasing the latch and permitting the handle to return to its inoperative position.
