This invention'relates to continuous billmg typewriting machines, in which a continuous web comprising plies of work-sheets, -with successive forms printed thereon, may
be fed with interleaved carbon-sheets around a cylindrical platen, and in which the carbon-sheets are shiftableat intervals from the typed forms to fresh untyped forms.
More particularly, the invention relates to t eimprovements which may. be used with machines disclosed in my co-pendin applications, Serial No. 648,705, filed une 30,
- 1923 (now Patent No. 1,586,343, dated May 25, 1926), and Serial N o.- 659,273, filed August 25, 1923 (now Patent No. 1,631,565,
is provided a pivoted carbon-carrier to which the ends of the carbon-sheets are attached, and which may be actuated to withdraw the carbon-sheets around the platen preparatory to shifting the carbon-sheets to a fresh set of forms. A relatively fixed table is also pro vided over which the web may be stretched to support the latter, when the carbon-carrier is actuated; the platen in the type of machine disclosed in said applications remaining in its normal typing position during carbon-shifting operations.
In my co-pendingapplication 659,273, the
table over which the web may be stretched preparatoryto the carbon-shifting operation is curved, so that said web may extend tangentially from said table to the carbon- Carrier, when the latter is in' its operated position, and tangentially from said table to the platen, said table being fixed on a subcarriage connected to the t ew'riter-carriage. When the carbon-carrier is returned to its normal position, a loop is produced to facilitate the line-spacing of said web around the platen, thus overcoming any possibility of slippage between the web? and said platen during rapid lin'e-spacmg operations of said platen.
A feature of the present invention is the provision of a pivoted table which is normally ineffective and hangs down behind the machine, and which may be raised to an eflective position, simultaneously with the carbon-carrier, when the latter is operated to withdraw the web around the platen to free the carbon-sheets therefrom preparatory 77 return of the carbon-carrier, thus permitting the loop to be formed more readily in the web. .ith this arrangement the machine is also more compact when the parts are in their normal position.
Another feature of the invention relates to means to lock the carbon-carrier and the SW1 gable table in their operated positions to prevent accidental return thereof during a carbon-shifting operation.

The invention is shown as applied to an" Underwood standard typewriting machine, in which type-bars 10, when operated by keys, not shown, swing upwardly and rearwardly to print against the vfront of a cylindrical platen 11, mounted on a carriage 12 comprising end. bars 13 connected to each other by a rear bar 14 and a front bar, not shown, said carriage being mounted for letter-feed movements on a rear rail 15 and a front rail, not shown, said rails being supported on the main frame 16 of the machine. The platen is secured to a shaft 17 journaled in end plates 18 of a platen-frame 20, said end plates being secured to each other by a bar 21 and a rear paper-table 22, over which a composite work-web 23 is led from the back of the machine to the rear and beneath the platen Where there are rovided feedrollers 24 and 25 to assist 1n feeding "the work-web around the platen. The platen may be rotated b a finger-wheel 26 or linespace wheel 27, t e latter being operable by suitable line-space mechanism, not shown. The platen-frame is supported on the carriage-frame for case-shifting movements in the usual way to present the platen to lowercase types 30 or upper-case types 31 on the type-bars. The feed-rollers may be released by mechanism operable by the regular feedroller release handle 28, so as to provide an unobstructed path around the platen when adjusting the work-web around the platen.
The web 23 may extend upwardly from any suitable source of supply over a guidebar 32, supported on a carbon-carrier 34, thevariousplies 35, of which the web may be composed, extending between carbon-carrying bars 36, detachablymounted on stepped standards 37, secured to a cross-bar or plate 38 of the-carbon-carrier. Carbon-sheets 40,
the rear ends of which areconnected to said bars 36, become interleaved bet-ween the webplies or work-sheets 35, and extend from the carbon-carrier with said work-sheets, in the formof a loop 41, to a web-conditioning table 42, and then down over the rear papertable, 22 to the platen, as previously described. The carbon-carrier 34 and the webconditioning table 42 normally occupy the positions indicated in Figure 1, but are --pivotally supported at 43 and 44, respectively, on a sub-carriage 45, connected to travel with the typewriter-carriage 12, by
brackets 46.
The sub-carriage comprises two downwardly-extending arms 47 to support a rockshaft 48, to which two arms 50 of the carboncarrier 34 are secured, and about the axis of which shaft the carbon-carrier may be iwung, as hereinafter described. The sub- Barriagecomprises at its lower end a cross bar 51 connecting the downwardly-extend. ing arms 47, said cross-bar being provided .with one or more rollers 52 to run on a rail 53, supported by. suitable brackets 54, se cured to the main frame 16 of the machine. Guards 55 are provided to prevent the subcarriage from leaving the rail.
After a set of forms has been typed, it is necessary to shift the carbon-sheets from the typed set of forms to a fresh set of untyped forms before the typed set is severed. In order to shift the carbons, the web must be firstso conditioned to facilitate such shifting. In order to do this, the web is with- I drawn around the platen to free the carbonsheets from said platen, as indicated in Figure 2. This may be'done by drawing forwardly an operating handle 56, pivoted at 44, to pull upwardly on a link 57 to swing a bell-crank 58, pivoted on a stud or shouldered screw 60, secured to the left member of the downwardly-extending arms 47 of the sub-carriage. Said bell-crank 58 is provided with a pin 61 extending into a slot 62 formed in forward extension 63 of one of the carbon-carrier arms 50,. so that upon ac: tuation of the bell-crank 58 the carbon-carrier is swung rearwardly and downwardly from the Figure 1 position to the Figure 2 position, thus retracting the carbon-sheets with the work-sheets about the platen. To assist in conditioning the web it is stretched over the web-conditioning table 42. Said table is actuated simultaneously with the operation of the carbon-carrier 34*" and is raised totheposition indicated in Figure 2. To this end the rock-shaft 48 is provided with an arm 64'connected with said table by means of a link'65 which is pushed upwardly during the actuation of the carbon-carrier to swing the table about its pivot 44, the table being brought to rest when the arm and link reach dead center (Figure 2).
The feed- rollers 24 and 25 may then be thrown on and the platen may be rotated to feed the worksheets '35 and advance or shift them relatively to thecarbon-sheets 40, the. extent of shifting depending on the length of forms used and being determined by an indicator or gage 66 of a gage-element 67, adjustably secured by means 0 a thumbscrew 68 to a staff or gage-bar 70, carried by a cross-bar 71, secured to the end plates 18 of the platen-frame, the parts being thus brought to the position indicated in Figure 4. Variationsmay be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others. Having thus described my invention, I
, claim:
1. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a
platen on said carriage around which a continuous web comprising worksheets with interleaved carbon-sheets may be fed, a carhon-carrier, a table, said carbon-carrier and said table being mounted independently of each other on said carriage, and a single finger-piece connected to said table and said carbon-carrier, and conditioned to simultaneously move the same upon their independent mountings.
2. In a--continuous billing typewriting 7 machine, the combination of a carriage, a

platen on said carriage around which acomposite web comprising continuous worksheets with interleaved carbon-sheets may fed, a normally inefiective table, a fingerpiece to actuate said table to condition the web for a shifting operation between the carbon-sheets andthe work-sheets, a bellcrank connected with said finger-piece, an arm connected withsaid table, and a pinand-slot connection between said arm and said bell-crank.

In 'a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen on said carriage around which a composite web comprising continuous work sheets with interleaved carbon-sheets may be fed, a normally ineffective table, a fingerpiece to actuate said table to condition the web for a shifting operation between the carbon-sheets and the Work-sheets, a bellcrank connected with said finger-piece, an arm connected with said table, and, a pinand-slot connection between said arm and said bell-crank, said arm and said bell-crank being so disposed whenthe table is inits operated position that the arm works against the dead center of the bell-crank by pressure exerted on said table.
17. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a
platen on said carriage around which 'a comshaf posite web comprising continuous worksheets with interleaved carbon-sheets may be fed, a normally ineffective table, a fingerpiece to actuate said table to condition the web for a shifting operation between the carbon-sheets and the work-sheets, a bell-crank connected with said finger-piece, a rockt, an arm on said rock-shaft, said arm being connected with said table, said arm having a slot therein, and a pin on said bellcrank to engage in said slot, said arm and said bell-crank being so disposed when the table is in its operated position that the arm works against the dead center of the bellcrank by pressure against said table.
