For convenience of description it is deemed expedient to describe the mein. ele ments of the complete combination in the order oi? their operetion beginning with the conveyor.
The conveyor,
by bolts 9 or equivalent tastenings, to the top 10 of a portable table having the usual arrangement of supporting legs. The drive belt travels, in contact with the wheel, from point A to point B (see Figure 1) and is driven to move in the direction indicated til till
by the arrow. From point B the belt passesvertical pulley 12. As it leaves the last mentioned pulley the belt passes downwardly through a slot 13 and around the underside of a drive pulley 14 fixed to a shaft 15 journalled between spaced standard 16 depending from the underside of the table top 10. From drive pulley 14 the belt is carried upwardly over a tension pulley 16' carried at the up er end of a swinging hanger 17 having its ower end pivoted upon shaft 15. At an intermediate point hanger 17 is connected to standards 16 by a spring 18 which causes pulle 16 to maintain pro er tension upon the elt. From the tension pulley 16' the belt passes upwardly around a further guide pulley 19 and through a second slot 20 (see Figure 1) formed in the table top 10. From the slot 20 the belt passes over a vertical pulley 21 and forwardly across the table top to a horizontal pulley 22 corresponding to the pulley 11 and located adjacent the aforementioned point A.
In the operation of the conveyor itwill be understood that the packages are interposed between the belt and the wheel at the point A and are caused to travel with and between these elements to the point B. The conve or is'adaptable to packages of varying thicknesses by regulating the tension in that portion of the belt traveling around the wheel 5 and, to this end, the aforesaid pulley 22 is fixed to a freely rotatable and laterally movable shaft 23 having its lower end journalled in a plate 24 having one end pivoted as at 25 to the table top 10. At its other end the plate is provided with a de ending flange 25 through which is threaded an adjusting screw 26 having its terminal portions mounted to rotate in the flanges 27 of a plate 28 suitably secured to the table, Any suitable expedient may be resorted to for holding the adjusting screw against longitudinal movement with reference to its supporting flanges such as the arrangement indicated M29 in Figure 5. It is thus apparent that as the screw is operated the plate 24 together with the shaft 23 and pulley 22 will be shifted to or from thewheel 5 thus varying the tension in that portion of the belt passing around the wheel and adjusting the conveyor to accommodate packages of varying thickness.
1 Adjacent to the pointA a suitable platform 30 is mounted upon which the packages are placed in upright position preparatory to being moved into contact with the wheel and belt at the said point A. Vertical adjustment of the platform to suit different conditions is provided for by a slot and pinconnection 31 as shown to advantage in Figure 2.
The shaft 15, which carries the belt drive I with any suitable form of control and, as
will be well understood, the relative ratio of the sheave 32 and 33 will depend upon the speed found suitable for the conveyor.
The adhesive applier.
As each package is grip by the conveyor at the point A adhesive is applied to the open flap of the package from the rim of a rolling contact device or wheel 34 which is mounted upon the upper end of a shaft 35 journalled in bearings 36 (see Figure 3) plier. Between the bearin s 36 shaft 35 is equipped with a fixed pu ey 38 connected by belt 39 to a pulley 40 on the shaft 23 which carries the drive belt adjusting pulley 22. From this description it is apparent that the rolling contact device or wheel 34 is operated directly by the conveyor belt 6. Immediately below wheel 34 shaft 35 is equipped with a pinion 41 meshing with a pinion 42 fixed to one end of a shaft 43 passm through the side walls of the aforesaid ad esive tank 47. Fixed to shaft 43, within said tank, is a vertical disc 44 serving to transfer adhesive from the tank to the rim of wheel 34. Through the medium of pinions 41 and 42 disc 44 is driven in an anti-clockwise direction as viewed from the right in Figure 3 and surplus adhesive carried upwardly by the disc is caused to return to the tank by a scraper 45 fixed to the upper edge of the tank and havin portions extending upon opposite sides 0 the disc. In order to prevent dripping of surplus adhesive supplied to the wheel 34 I prefer to mount within the tank 37 a brush 46 which engages the lower outer edge ortion of wheel 34 and causes surplus molsture to drip from the wheel into the tank.
The folder.
From the adhesive applier above described each package is carried by the conveyor to a folder 48 which functions to fold the flap down upon the body of the package. This folder consists of a metal plate made U-shape for the greater portion of its length to straddle the rim of wheel 5. At the receiving end of the folder the outer side and bight portion of the plate are shaped in the peculiar manner indicated at 49 in Figure 4 so that the folding of the flap is accomplished in a gradual manner as is common with folding devices of this character. The folder is supported in operative position by suitable standards 50 having their upper ends suitably fastened to the folder and their lower ends anchored to the table top 10.
