TYIFEWRITING MACHINE.

This invention relates to sound-deadening casings for typewriting machines, and is especially intended for use in connection with machines of the portable class.
The machine may be mounted upon a baseboard, and provided with a sheet-metal casing including a displaceable top having a glass panel. The keyboard of the machine protrudes to the exterior of the casing and is operated in the regular way. The-carriage is controlled from the outside of the casing by'means of a handle pivotally mounted in the casing, and effective by .mcans of a gear-sector and pinion to revolve a drum. A cord is wound around this drum and connected to the line-space lever of the machine to return the carriage and linespace the platen.
Another feature of the invention relates to novel means for releasing the carriage without necessitating the lifting of the cover, and this means includes a bar extending lengthwise within the casing and engageable with the carriage-release lever. The bar is pivotally mounted in the end walls of the casing, and is normally held free from the carriage-release lever by means of a spring. the bar being swingable into engagement with the lever upon the depression of a button provided on the outside of the casing.
Another feature of this invention relates to novel means for resiliently securing the machine to the base-board in a manner to further soften the noise arising fromthe operation thereof. To this end, there is provided a pad of sound-deadening material uponwhich the feet of the machine rest. At the rear thereof, the machine is secured to the board by means of a clip permanently secured to the board. Said clip has a hook designed to engage in a hole in the rear wall of the machine-frame. The front part of the machine is secured to the board by means of screws which are passed through brackets fast to the frame and screwed into threaded plugs driven into the board from the bottom thereof.

The Underwood portable machine is provided with a frame 10 having a front extension 11, which encloses a series of depressible keys 12 and a traveling carriage 13,
which is normally returnable by means of a line-space lever 14. The frame 10 is secured toa baseboard 15 by means of a clip 17 designed to engage in a hole 18 in the rear wall 19 of the frame, said base-board being provided with a felt covering 16. The clip is permanently fast to the base-board by means of screws 20, and the machine is .cushioned with a felt pad 21, mounted be tween the base-board and feet 22 fast to the frame, as shown in Figure 5. The front part of the machine is provided with angular plates 23. fast to the frame by means of screws 24:. The angular plates 23 are perforated to receive screws 25, which are threaded into metal plugs 26 driven into the board. To further cushion the machine, there may be provided rebound rubber washers or sleeves 27 under the heads of the screws 25.
In order todeaden the sound arising from the operation of the machine, there is provided a casing having a rearwall 28 and side walls 29. The rear and side walls may be made of a continuous piece of sheet metal, which may be further extended at the front thereof to provide a front wall 30. The front wall 30 has an opening 31, through which the keyboard-extension 11 protrudes to the exterior of the casing, thereby ren- The walls of the casing are fast to the base-board 15 by means of screws 32.
According to certain featuresof this invention,.there is provided a front-plate 33, which is shaped to conform with the front wall of the machine, as shown in Figire 2.

Said plate is lined with sound-deadening material 34, and has extensions or plates fast thereto'by means of rivets 36, the plates being provided with slots 37 designed to engage studs 38 fast to" the front wall of the casing. The plate 33 is secured to the front wall by means of winged nuts 39.
The carriage-return lever 14 is provided withan arm 40, secured thereto by means of a screw 41. Said arm carries at the end thereof a cord42wound around a drum 43 fast to a shaft 44. "Said shaft is journaled in a supporting bracket or base 45, and carries at the end thereofa beveled gear 46 designed to engage a gear-sector 47 pivotally mounted upon a shaft 48. The sector is normallyheld in the position shown in Figure 4'by means of a comparativelyolight spring-49, which is effective to take-up the slack of the cord and is wound around the shaft 48. The noise ensuing from the operation of the machine is confined within the casing by providing a sound-deadening lining 76 and a cover 77. The latter is pivotally mounted upon a hinge 78, and is provided with a glass panel 79, which is secured to the cover by means of clips 80.
Since the unused portion of the work-sheet is confined within the casing, the trailing edge thereof is liable to drag along the felt lining and otherwise engage with some of the operating mechanism within the casing. To overcome this, there is provided a sheetmetal plate 81, which is curled at the bottom thereof to form a channel, as shown in Figure 4. The plate may be secured to the rear wall of the casing by means of screws 82.
,Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A carriage-return mechanism for a typewriting machine having a traveling carriage and a carriage-return lever therefor, said mechanism including, in combination, a rotatably-mounted drum, a cord wound therearound, the cord having one end fast to the drum and the other end fast to the carriage-return lever, a bevel gear operatively connected to said drum in a manner to rotate therewith, ageared sector meshing with said gear, a pivot-shaft for said sector, and a handle for swinging said sector to thus rotate the drum and return the carriage.
2. A carriage-return mechanism for a typewriting machine having a traveling carriage and a carriage-return lever therefor, said mechanism including, in combination,
va rotatably-mounted drum, a cord wound therearound, the cord having one end fast to the drum and the other end fast to the carriage-return lever, said drum having a peripheral groove for receiving the cord, means for holding the cord in the groove, said means including a guard for completely encasing the drum except for a cut-away pertion that permits the passing of the cord from the exterior of the guard to the drum, and means for rotating said drum, said lastmentioned means including a shaft for the drum, a bevel gear carried by said shaft, and a mannally-operablc geared sector for engaging said gear.
3. A carriage-return mechanism for a typewriting machine having a traveling carriage and a carriage-return lever therefor, said mechanism including, in combination, a rotatablyrmounted drum, a cord wound therearound, the cord having one end fast to the drum and the other end fast to the carriage-return lever, said drum having a peripheral groove for receiving the cord, means for holding the cord in the groove, said means including a guard for completely encasing the drum except for a cut-away portion that permits the passing of the cord from the exterior of the guard to the drum, means for rotating said drum, said lastn'ientioned means including a shaft for the drum, a bevel gear carried by said shaft, and a manually-operable geared sector for engaging said gear, and. means associated with said geared sector for indicating the position of the carriage relatively to the printing point of the machine.
4. A carriage-return mechanism for controlling a typewriting machine in a sound deadening casing from the exterior thereof, the machine having a traveling carriage and a carriage-return linger-piece therefor, said mechanism including, in combination, a rotatably-mounted drum having a cord wound therearound, said cord having one of its ends fast to the drum and the other end fast to said finger-piece in a manner to draw the carriage toward the drum when the drum is rotated, means for manually rotating said drum, said means including a bevel gear, a geared sector, and a handle fast to said sec tor, said handle protruding to the exterior of the casing through aslot inthe wall thereof, and means associated with said handle for indicating the position of the carriage relatively to the printing point of the machine.
5. A carriagdreturn mechanism for controlling a typewriting machine in a sounddeadening casing from the exterior thereof, the machine having a traveling carriage and a carriage-return linger-piece there or, said mechanism including, in combination, a retatablyunounted drum having a cord wound therearound, said cord having one of its ends fast to the drum and the other end fast to said finger-piece in a manner to draw the carriage toward the drum when the drum is rotated, means for manually rotating said sector, said handle protruding to the exterior oft-he casing through a slot in the wall thereof, and means associated with said handle for indicating the position of the carriage relatively to the printing point of the machine, said last-mentioned means including a fixed graduated scale and a pointer carried by said handle, the graduations on the scale corresponding to the letter-space movement of the carriage.

Means for resiliently securing a typewriting machine to the baseboard of a sound-deadening casing, said means includin g, in combination, a felt pad under the feet of the machine, a clip at the rear of the machine, said clip ei'igaging in a hole in. the rear wall of the machine, brackets fast to the frame of the machine at the front thereof, screws for securing said brackets to the baseboard, and threaded. plugs car-- ried by said base-board for receiving said screws,
7. A sound-deadening casing for a type writing machine having a frame, a keyboard anda traveling carriage, the casing including a body-part and a cover therefor, the
body-part including a base-board, rear, side i and front walls, the latter having a keyboard-opening, and means for returning the carriage after each line of typing, said means including a handle adjacent the keyboard, said handle being pivotally mounted on a shaft in the casing and protruding to the exterior of the casing through a slot in the front wall thereof, a drum in the casing, a cord wound therearound, said cord having one end fast to the drum and the other end fast to the carriage, and means for operatively connecting said drum with said handle in a manner to revolve the drum upon operation of the handle.
8. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine having a frame, a keyboard and a traveling carriage, the casing including a body-part and a cover therefor, the body-part including a base-board, rear, side and front walls, the latter having a key hoard-opening, and means for returning the carriage after each line of ty giing, said. means including a handle adjacent the keyboard, said handle being pivotally mounted on a shaft in the casing and protruding to the exterior of the casing through a slot in the front wall. thereof, a drum in the casing, a cord wound therearound, said cord having one end fast to the drum and the other end fast to the carriage, andhieans for operatively connecting said drum with said handle in a manner torevolvc the drum upon opera ti on of the handle, said last-mentioned means including a geared sector forming an integral part of said handle and a bevel gear mounted with the drum in a manner to revolve therewith, said bevel ear engaging t1 w1th the geared sector 1n a manner to re volve the drum upon operation of the handle. 9. A sound-deadenmg casmg for a typetill lflfl (ill writing machine having a frame, a keyboard and a traveling carriage, the casing includmg a body-part and a cover therefor, the
body-part including a base-board, rear, side' and front walls, the latter having a keyboard-opening, and means for returning the carriage after each line of typing, said means including a handle adjacent the keyboard, said handle being pivotally mounted on a shaft in the casing and protruding to the exterior of the casing through a slot in the tegral part of said handle and a bevel gear mounted with the drum in a manner to revolve therewith, saidbevel gear engaging with the geared sector in a manner to revolve the drum upon operation of the handle, and a graduated scale mounted upon the front wall of the casing for indicating the position of the'carriage relative to the printing point of the machine.
' 10; A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine having a frame, a keyboard and a traveling carriage, the casing including a body-part and a cover therefor, the body-part including a base-board, rear, side and front walls, the latter having a keyboard-opening, and means for returning the carriage after each line of typing, said meansineluding a handle adjacent the keyboard, said'handle being pivotally mounted on a shaft in the casing and protruding to the exterior of the casing through a slot in thefront wall thereof, a drum in the casing, a cord wound therearound, said cord having one end fast to the drum and the other end fast tothe carriage, means for operatively connecting said drum with said handle in a manner to revolve the drum upon operation of the handle, said last-mentioned means ineluding a geared sector forming an integral part of said handle and a bevel gear mounted with the'drum in a manner to revolve therewith, said bevel gear engaging with the geared sector in a manner to revolve the drum upon operation of the handle, a graduated sector fast to the front wall of the casing, said graduated sector having a slot through which the handle passes to the outside there of, and a pointer carried by said handle, said pointer co-operating with the graduations on the graduated sector to indicate the position of the carriage in relation to the printing point of the machine.

The combination with a typewriting machine including resilient feet and a baseboard, of, an intermediate base of sounddeadening material between said resilient feet and the base-board, and means for securing the machine to said base-board in a manner to hold said machine in working position on the intermediate base, while preserving the resiliency of said feet and the sounddeadening qualities of said base, said means including a clip at the rear of the machine, said clip engaging in a hole in the rear wall of the machine, brackets fast to the frame of the machine at the front thereof, and screws for securing said brackets to the base-board.
12. The combination with a typewriting machine including resilient feet and a baseboard, of an intermediate base of sounddeadening material between said resilient feet and the base-board, and means for securing the machine to said. base-board in a manner to hold said machine in working position on the intermediate base, while preserving the resiliency of said feet and the sound-deadening qualities of said base, said means including a clip at the rear of the machine, said clip engaging in a hole in the rear wall of the machine, brackets carried by the frame of the machine, headed screws passing through openings in the brackets and the intermediate base, and then into holding relation with the base-board, and resilient sound-deadening sleeves carried by said screws between the heads thereof and the brackets.
13. The combination with a sound-deadening casing for enclosing a typewriting machine including a carriage and a. release-lever therefor, of means operable from the outside of the casing for actuating said release-lever, said means including a displaceable bail carried by the casing and operatively associated with the release-lever, an arm fixed to the bail, aspring having one end connected to the free end of said arm and the other end held stationary, said spring being effective to maintain said bail in non-releasing position, and an outside button connected to said arm in a manner to operate said bail and thereby actuate the release-lever against the action of said spring.

The combination with a typewriting machine including a. platen-carriage, linespacing and carriage-returning mechanism and a sound-deadening casing for the machine, including a base upon which the machine is mounted, of means for operating said mechanism from the outside of the easing, said means being in the form of a. selfcontained unit positioned within the casing and secured to the base adjacent one end of the casing and including an operating handle extending through an opening in the front wall of said casing to the exterior thereof, and operating connections between said handle and said line-spacing and carriagereturning mechanism.
15. The combination with a typewriting machine including a platen-carriage, linespacing and carriagereturning mechanism and a sounddeadening casing for the machine, of means for operating said mechanism from the outside of the casing, said means being in the form of a self-contained unit positioned within the casing and including an operating handle extending through an opening in said casing to the exterior thereof, operating connections between said handle and said line-spacing and carriage-returning mechanism, a graduated later-space scale at the outside of the casin and a pointer operated by the handle for indicating onsaid graduated scale each letterspaee position of the enclosed platen-carriage.
16. The combination with a typewriting machine including a platen-carriage, linespacing and carriage-returning mechanism and a sound-deadening casing for the ma chine, of means for operating said mecha nism from the outside of the casing, said means being in the form of a self-contained unit positioned within the casing and in.- cluding a base, a winding drum, a cord having one end attached to the drum and the other end connected to the line-space lover, a handle extending through an opening in the front of the casing to the exterior there-v of, operating connections between the barn dle and the drum, and a pointer carried bythe handle, said casing carrying a graduated letter-space scale on the outside thereof and co-operating with said pointer to indicate each letterspace position of the enclosed platen-carriage.
17. The combination with a typewriting machine including a platen-carriage, linespacing and carriage-returning mechanism and a sound-deadening casing for the machine, of means for operating said mechanism from the outside of the casing, said means being in the form of a self-contained unit positioned within the casing and including a base, a winding drum including a shaft, a cord having one end attached to the drum and its other end connected to the line space lever, journals for the shaft, a push down handle extending through an opening in the front wall of the casing to the eX- terior thereof, said base also including a mounting for said handle, and a pointer carried by the handle, said casing carrying a graduated letter-space scale on the outside thereof and co-operating with said pointer to indicate on said graduated scale each letter-space position of the enclosed platencarriage.
18. The combination with a typewriting machine including a platen-carriage, linespacing and carriage-returning mechanism, and a sound-deadening casing for the machine, of means for operating said mechanism from the outside of the casing, said means being in the form of a self-contained unit positioned within the casing and including a base, a winding drum. including a shaft, a cord having one end attached to the drum and its other end connected to the linespace lever, a guard for retaining and guiding the cord on the drum, journals for the shaft, a bevel. gear fixed to said shaft, a pushdown handle extending through an opening in the front wall of the casing to the catterior thereof, a seetor-gear operated by said handle and meshing with said bevel gear, a standard carried by said base and upon which said handle is operatively mounted, a spring co-operating with said handle to maintain the same in position and to keep said cord in taut condition between the drum and the line-space lever, and an indicator operated by the handle, said casing including a letter-space scale secured to the outside front wall thereof, said scale having a slot in which said handle is arranged to move and also having letter-space graduation-marlrs at both sides of the slot, said indie: tor being arranged to travel in the scale-slot to point out on said graduation-marks each letterspace position of the enclosed platen-- carriage.
19. The combination with a typewriting machine including a platen-carriage, linespacing and carriage-returning mechanism and a sound-deadeningcasing for the machine, of means for operating said mechanism from the outside of the casing, said means being in the form of a self-contained unit positioned within the casing and ineluding a base, a winding drum including a shaft, a cord having one end attached to the drum and its other end connected to the hire-space lever, a guard for retaining and guiding the cord on the drum, journals for the shaft, a bevel geanfixed to said shaft, 2, push-down handle extending through an opening in the front wall of the casing to the exterior thereof, a sector-gear operated by said handle and meshing with said bevel gear, a standard carried by said base and upon which said handle is operatively mounted, a spring co-operating with said handle to maintain the same in position and. to keep said cord in taut condition between the drum and the line-space lever, and an ndicator operated by the handle, said casing including a letter-space scale secured to the outside front wall thereof, said scale having a slot in which said handle is arranged to move and also having letter-space graduat1on-marks at both sides of the slot, said indicator being arranged to travel in the scale-slot to point out 011 said graduationmarks each letter-space position of the enclosed 1: laten-carriage, and a curved channel at the back of the machine for guiding the overhanging portion of a work-piece.

T he combination with a portable typewriting machine and a baseboard, of means for securing the machine to said baseboard, including a clipmounted on the baseboard at the rear of the machine, said clip engaging a hole in the rear wall of the machine, brackets carried b the front portion of the frame of the mac ine, headed screws passing through openings-in the brackets and into holding relation with the baseboard, and resilient sound-deadening material carried by saidscrews between the heads thereof and the brackets.
21. The combination with a sound-deadening casing for enclosing a typewriting machine,including a carriage and a releaselever therefor, of operable means within the casing for actuating said release-lever, a
spring effective to maintain said operable means in non-releasing position, and an operating member on the outside of the casing connected with said operable means for I actuating the release-lever against the action of said spring.
22. A carriage-return mechanism for a typewriting machine having a traveling carriage and a carriage-return lever therefor,
said mechanism including, in combination, a rotatable drum, a cord wound therearound, the cord having one end fast to the drum and the other end fast to the carriage-return lever, a gear operatively connected to said drum in a manner to rotatetherewith,
- a driving gear meshing with said gear, a
handle for operating said driving gear and thus .rotate the drum and return the carriage, and a spring operative upon said driving gear and handle for taking up any play between the gears and the slack of the cord.
23. The combination with a sounddeadening casing for enclosing a typewriting machine, of a carriage-return mechanism for the typewriting machine having a traveling carriage and a carriage-return lever therefor, said mechanism including, in combination, a rotatable drum, a cord wound therearound, the cord having one end fast to the drum and the other end fast to the carriage-return lover, a handle extending outside of the casing and having an operative connection for rotating said drum to return the carriage, and a spring operative upon said handle for taking up any play between the handle and said drum and the slack of the cord.
24. The combination with a sound-deadening casing for enclosing a typewriting machine, of a carriage-return mechanism for the typewriting machine having a traveling carriage and a carriage-return lever therefor, said mechanism including, in combination, a rotatable drum, a cord wound therearound, the cord having one end fast to the drum and the other end fast to the carriage-return lever, a handle extending outside of the casing and having an operative connection for rotating said drum to return the carriage, a spring operative upon said handle for taking up any play between the handle and said drum and the slack of the cord, and means for adjusting the tension of said spring.
