In the drawings, 16 is a distributor cup having a bearing 28 for supporting a. shaft 90 27. The upper surfaces of the central hearing 28, and a shoulder 32 and a radial lug 33 formed integrally with the; bearing and wall of the cup are machined to the same horizontal plane. A washer 34 seating on the. top of the bearing 28 and pressed into a circumferential groove 35 formed 1n the shaft 27 supports the latter in operative position.
A vertical pin 36 secured to the shoulder 32 and projecting into the distributor housing is formed with a collar 07 forming an axis for a fixed contact arm 38, a flange 39 supporting a hollow spooled insulating bushing 40 and a reduced upper portion 41 35 forming an axis for the bushing.
Contact arm 38 rests on shoulder 32 and lug 33, and is formed with a notched outer end 42 embracing the collar 37, an elongated aperture 43 adjacent the opposite end 40 of the arm and an upturned projection 44 supporting fixed contact 45. Screw 43 passes through the aperture 43 into lug 33 and secures the fixed contact arm in adjusted position. A movable contact arm 46 of channel-shape cross section supports a contact 47, and one end thereof is formed around the bushing 40. A plate 48 is secured to the inner surface of the movable contact arm and supports a cam follower 49 adapted to en- 50 gage cam 50 journallcd uponthe projecting end of the shaft 27 and the washer 34.
The movable contact 47 is yieldingly urged toward the fixed contact 45 by a leaf spring 51 bent around and seating in the I channeled end of the contact arm 46 and shaft 27 and detachably secured in a prede- 1922.' Serial No. 568,145.

This plate is held in position by the spring 51 and by an insulating plug 54 attached to the plate and pro ectlng into a hole 55 in the wall of the distributor housing. Spring 51 and plate 53 electrically connect the breaker arm 46 with a wire 56 which is fastened to a clip 57 provided by the plate. 582 is an. insulating plate resting on the shoulder 32 and held in position by the. insulating plug 54 which passes through av hole in they plate.
Gable 56 passes: through an insulating tube 59- mounted axially in a cylindrical. condenser 60; One terminal of condenser 60 is attached to cable 56 and the other to the condenser case which is grounded upon. the cup l6 by attaching it thereto by screw which passes through a plate 63 attached. to the condenser case and is threaded into a boss 64 on the outer surface of the cup is a distributor rotor mounted upon the termined angular position thereon by a hollow boss 71 on the lower side of the rotor 70 and a key 72. integral with the rotor and received by a transverse slot 73 in the shaft end. Pressed into lugs 7 4 at the ends of the rotor arms 75 and 7 6 are downwardly projecting pins 77 and 78 supporting a. plate'79 centrally apertured to receive the upper end of cam 50 and formed with oppositely disposed upturned lugs 80 and 81. Pins 77 90 and 78 carry, respectively, bushings 82 and 83 and transversely disposed weights 84 and 85 rotatably mounted on the pins and nor mally held in proximity to the cam by springs 86 and 87. Spring 86 is connected at its ends to lug 80 on plate 79 and a pin 88 projecting from the upper surface ofweight 84. Spring 87 is connected in like manner to lug 81 on plate 79 and pin 89 on weight 85. The weights 84 and 85 are connected .to 1100 cam 50 by radial arms 90 and 91, respectively, projecting into diametrically dis posed slots 92 and 93 in the sides of the cam. The shaft rotates the distributor rotor which in turn rotates the plate 79 and 105 weights 84 and 85 which swing outwardly by centrifugal force about the axes 77 and 78, respectively. The weights are supported by shoulders 84 and 85 formed on the plate 79 adjacent the pins 77 and 78 and me by lugs 94 formed on the upper surface of the plate (Fig. 1).
95 isa radially disposed resilient conductor mounted upon the rotor arm 76. Distributor head 96 is mounted upon the distributor cup in any convenient manner, and carries an annular row of sockets 98 adapted to be connected by cables to the spark plugs of an engine and a central socket 99 electrically connected to spring 95 by a spring pressed plunger 100. The conductor 95 carries a button 101 for engaging the under surfaces of the sockets 98, and these under sur-- faces and the button 101 are large enough to providean electrical connection between the coil and spark plug although the timing of the spark may vary.
In the present invention the cam controlling device operates without friction due to the distributor rotor rubbing against the distributor head as in conventional typesof ignition apparatus with a wiping contact distributor. Therefore, the automatic timing of the i 'tion' will not be interfered with by friction of the distributor.
While the form of embodiment of the present invention as herein disclosed constitutes a referred form, it is to be understood that 0t er forms might be adopted all comin within the scope of the claims which f0 ow.
What is claimed is as follows:
1. Ignition ap aratus comprising a housing roviding a earing, a shaft journalled in, the bearing and extending beyond the bearing into the housing, a cam located between the shaft end and the bearing and journalled loosely on the shaft extension, a circuit interrupter operated by the cam, a sub-assembly structure for drivingly connecting the shaft with the cam and for varying the angular relation of the cam to the shaft in response to, variations in shaft speed, said structure being removable as a unit from the shaft without disturbing the cam or interrupter, and said structure comprising a support mounted upon said shaft end and driven thereby, weights movably connected with the support and located between the support and cam, and springs for restraining the weights, said weights and cam having cooperating provisions by which these members are connected by movement of the subassembly toward the cam axially of the shaft;

Ignition apparatus comprising a housing providing a bearing, a shaft journalled in the bearing and extending beyond the bearing into the housing, a cam located between the shaft end and the bearing and journalled loosely on the shaft extension, a circuit interrupter operated by the cam, a sub-assembly structure for drivingly connecting the shaft with the cam and for varying the angular relation of the cam to the shaft in response to variations in shaft speed, said structure being removable as a unit from the shaft without disturbing the cam or interrupter, and said structure comprising a support mounted upon the shaft extension and driven thereby, weights pivotally mounted on the support eccentric to the shaft and located between the cam and support, springs connecting the weights and support, and means for transmitting rotary motion from the weights to the cam and comprising lever arms provided by the weights and cooperating with parts provided by the cam.
.3.- Ignition apparatus comprising a housing providing a bearing, a shaft journalled in the bearing and extending beyond the bearing into the housing, a cam located between the shaft end and the bearing and journalled loosely on the shaft extenslon, a circuit interrupter operated by the cam, a sub-assembly structure for drivingly connecting the shaft with the cam and for varyingl the angular relation of the cam to the shaft in response to variations in shaft speed, said structure being removable as a unit from the shaft without disturbing the cam or interrupter, and said structure comprisin a non-conducting support mounted upon said shaft end and driven thereby, weights movably connected with the support and located between the support and cam, and springs for restraining the weights, said weights and cam having cooperating provisions by which these members are connected by movement of the sub-assembly toward the cam axially of the shaft, a distributor head closing the housing, and a distributor rotating conductor carried by the non-conducting support.
4. Ignition apparatus comprising in combination, a shaft, a timer cam loosely mounted upon the shaft, a member removably mounted upon the end of the shaft. above the cam and driven by the shaft, a plurality of pivot pins suspended from said member eccentric to said shaft, weight members each pivoted upon a pin, a plate attached to the outer ends of said pins to retain the weights upon the-pins, a plurality of springs each attached to the plate and to a weight, and lever arms provided by the weights and cooperating with the cam.

An ignition timer-distributor including a housing, a distributor head closing the housing, a shaft extending into the housing, a distributor rotor of nonconducting material removabl attached to the end of the shaft, a plura ity of pins connected with the rotor, a plurality of weights each mounted upon a pm, springs restraining movement of the weights away from the shaft, and a cam loosely journalled upon the shaft and having portions cooperating with the weights.
