TONGUING AND GBOOVING APPARATUS.
Application filed. July 9, 1927. Serial No. 204,609.
This invention relates to a tonguingand grooving apparatus by which tongues and grooves of different widths can be produced. The tongues and grooves madeby this ma chine are so accurate and clean that no finishing work is required.
An embodiment of the invention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing in which:
1 Fig. 1 shows the tonguing and groovingapparatus in cross section.
Fig. 2 shows in elevation partly in section the cutting-blades.
Fig. 3 shows in elevation a threaded cylinder.
Fig. 4 shows the tonguingand grooving apparatus in top-plan view, the casing being removed.
The touguingand grooving apparatus comprises a casing composed of two parts 1, 2, which are guided the one on the other by means of pins 3. These pins are fixed at the one end in the part 1 of the casing and project from the lower end-face of this part 1. The part 2 of the casing has bores 4, designed to receive the pins 3 of part 1.
The two parts 1 and 2 0f the casing are knurled on the outer side.
The machine comprises further a threaded cylinder 5 having left-handed thread 6 and right-handed thread 7. All the elements 1, 2, 5 are bored. The parts 1, 2 of the casing have each a bush 8, 9 respectively designed to guide the same on the shaft of the machine-tool (milling-machine).
In order to accommodate the threaded cylinder 5 in the casing, the parts 1, 2 of the casing are bored out and have each a guideface 10, said guide-faces serving for guiding three milling- parts 11,12, 13 which together form a circular millingblade. Each part 11, 12, 13 of the milling blade has a guide-flange 14, the outer diameter of which corresponds to the outer diameter of the guide-face 10. The flange 14 of part 11 has on one portion of its height a female lefthanded thread 15 and that of the part 12 of the milling-blade has on a portion of its height a female right-handed thread 16, the flange of part 18 of the milling-blade having an inwardly directed tongue 17. This tongue is accommodated in an annular groove 18 between the left-handed and right- handed threads 6, 7 of the threaded a cy inder The female left-handed thread 15 of the part 11 of the milling blade engages with the male left-handed thread 6 of the threaded cylinder, while the thread 16 of the part 12 of the milling blade engages with the righthanded thread 7 ofsaid cylinder 5. The flange 14 of each part 11, 12, 13 of the circular milling blade projects, on the one hand, into the part 1 of the casing and on the other hand into the part 2 of the casing, the outer surfaces bearing on the ringshaped guide faces 10 of the parts of the casing. The parts of the milling blade are secured against rotation in the parts 1, 2 of the casing by the pins 3 onto which these parts bear and are guided on the same by the cut out portion 19. The cylinder 5 is rotatably mounted on the bushes 8, 9 and has two holes 20 designed to receive the studs of a key not shown in the drawing. 7 At the point where these holes 20 are arranged the cylinder 5 is knurled so that it may be rotated by hand.
The operation of the tonguingand grooving apparatus described is as follows As shown in Fig. 1 a narrow groove and a. narrow tongue may be produced by means of the toguing and grooving apparatus as all parts 11, 12, 13 of the circular cutting blade are situated on. the same circular path. When wider grooves or tongues have to be produced, part 2 of the casing is lifted off the pins 3, a key is placed on the cylinder 5 and the cylinder is rotated to the left. The two parts 11, 12 of the milling blade which,
owing to the pins 3, cannot rotate move away in opposite directions the one from the other, the part 13 remaining in its position.
Fig. 2 shows the parts 11, 13 in this position. When each part of the milling blade is 4 mm. thick, tongues and grooves of 4 to 12 mm. may be cut with the apparatus. WVhen a second set of thicker cutting blades is used, grooves or tongues up to 45 mm. may be produced. No finishing of the tongues and grooves is necessary as they are very accurate and clean. This tonguing and grooving apparatus may be made and sold in different sizes. It is adapted to be used for machine tools revolving to the right or to the left. I Two adjustable spring collars, notshown in the drawing serve to press the tt'vo parts the 11c chine the one against the other and to secure thereby the parts 11, 12, 13 of the cutting blades in their actual position. At the adjusting or separating of the parts 01 the milling-blade the part 11 bears on the one side on part 1 of the casing, the parts 12, 13 being moved away from the part 11 by the threaded cylinder. The part 13 preserves, however, in any case its central position with regard to the otherblades 11, 12.
At suitable points scales and marks may be arranged, so that the parts 13, 12, 11 of the milling blade can be rapidly and easily adjusted to any desired width of grooves or tongues.
I claim 1. A tonguing and grooving apparatus by means oi which grooves and tongues of dii"- fe'rent Widths'can be produced accurately and cleanly, comprising in combination a threaded cylinder having lett handed and right-handed threads and a circular groove between said threads, a casing in which said cylinder is rotatably mounted, a milling blade composed of three parts, one of said parts engaging with the left-handed thread another of said parts engaging with the right-handed thread, a projection on the inner surface of the parts and guided in said circular groove of said threaded cylinder so that by rotating said cylinder said parts of the milling blade are moved towards and away the one from the other in the axial diguide face, the parts of the milling blade having each a flange projecting towards both sidesand engaging with said guide face of the casing. V
4. A tonguing and grooving apparatusas specified in claim 1, comprising in combination with the casing having a ring-shaped guide face, the parts of the milling blade having each a flange projecting towards both sides and engaging with said guide face of the casing, said flange of two of said parts having a iemale thread the third part having a pro ection engaging with the groove of said cylinder.
5. A tonguing and grooving apparatus as specified 111 clalm 1 1n which the casing 1S composed of two parts, pins for connecting I said two parts of the casing the one with the other and serving further to prevent rotation of the parts of the milling blade.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
WILHELM OHNO.
