This invention relates to battery terminal clips, and contemplates a structure by means veniently associated with or removed from the post of the battery wlthout requiring the use of tools for this purpose, and one which can be effectively and umformly clamped about the post.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detail description is read 1n connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed. I
In the drawing forming part of H118 application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and where- 1n:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a battery showing how the clip is associated therewith.
Figure 2 is an edge elevation of the clip looking at one side thereof.
Figure 3 is a similar view looking at the other side.
Figure 4 is an end elevation taken at right angle to Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in deta1l A 1ndicates generally a battery of any well known construction and wherein 10 represents one of the posts thereof.
The clip forming the subject matter of the present invention embodies companion sections 11 and 12 respectively, both of which are designed to conform to the shape of the post with which they are adapted to be associated. Carried by the section 12 is a loop-like extension 13 to accommodate the wire 14, while the adjacent corresponding extremities of the companion sections are arranged in spaced parallel relation. The extremity 15 ofthe section 11 is provided with an opening 16, the diameter of which is slightly larger than the diameter of the bolt 17 which is adapted to be passed through this opening, and through a corresponding opening 18 in the adjacent extremit of the section 12. The 10011: is threaded into the last mentioned opening, but by reason of the diameter of the opening 16 with relation to that of the bolt, the section 11 is permitted sliding movement upon the latter. The bolt is provided with a head 19, and interposed between the latter and the extremity 15 of the section 11 is a coil spring 20 which yieldabl supports the section 11 in i re latl dn with-the section 12. TE: ther extremlty 21 of thesectionill is provided'with an elon ated slot 22 which coincides with I th note 23 formed in the adjacent extremity 4 of the section 12, which sections are held associated in o erative. relation by means of a bolt 25 incliiding a squared portion 26 adapted to be received by the slot 22 above mentioned. This bolt is also provided with a head 27,- while interposed between the latter and the extremity 21 of the section .11 is a coil spring 28-which co-operates with the sprin 20 above mentioned, to yieldably support t e section 11 in clamping relatlon with the section 12. A thumb nut 29 is threadedly associated with the bolt 25, and through the instrumentality of which the sections of the clamp can be caused to effectively and uniformly engage the post of the battery. The entire construction is very simple, and is such as to allow the clamp to be quickly associated with or removed from the post of the battery as the occasion may require, and without the use of tools or implements.
In order to associate the clamp with the post, it is only necessary to pass the bolt 17 through the openings at one end of the clamp, Which bolt is as above stated threadedly associated. with the section 12. The bolt is so arranged as to allow the section 11 to move with relation to the section 12, while the other ends of the clamp are being con-- nected together. To accomplish this it is only necessary to slip the bolt 25 through the other ends of the clamp sections, and then tighten the thumb nut 29, which allows the extremity 15 of the section ll-to slide on the bolt 17 against the tension of the spring 20, so that as the thumb nut is screwed upon the bolt the clamp sections are caused to efl'ectively and uniformly engage the post.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood, that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall Within the i to embrace, the adjacent end portions of the respective sections being extended in spaced parallel relation, two of said ends havin aligned openings, one of which is threade a bolt assing through said openings and threade into the latter mentioned opening, the other end of one section having a slot, the adjacent end of the other section having an opening, a bolt passed through said slot and opening and havin a squared portion arranged in the slot, a t umb nut associated with the bolt, coiled springs surrounding both of said bolts and exerting ressure against one of said sections to ermit yieldin movement thereof with re ation to the ot er section while the' clamp is being attached to the post, and a sleeve-like member carried by one of said sections and arranged at a right angle thereto.
In testimony whereof. I aflix my signature.
GEORGE HARDOS.
