This invention relates to ap zu'atus for cooling incandescent coke of tie type in which the cooling gas is passed in a closed circuit through the coke in a container and over a heat exchange device the circulaton being caused by some form of pump or fan or b a combination of the two.
' of t e invention is to avoid explosive combustion taking place within the container n consequence of the gas given off in the container by insufficiently distilled coke forming an explosive mixture with air when a certain quantity of fresh air is suddenly introduced into the container, for example, when a fresh quantity of coke is being charged or when cooled coke*is being withdrawn.
Accordin to this invention the apparatus is provide with an air-inlet valve from which the current of cooling gas is continuously supplied with a small uantity of fresh air n such a manner that t e air passes to combustion with the combustible gases immediately they are formed and without disturbing the cooling operation. The air inlet !5 valve is preferably adjustable and an outlet valve for the cooling gases which is also formed adjustable may be provided these two valves being arranged in connection with one another so that the two valves can so operate simultaneously.
In a preferred arrangement the air inlet valve is fitted in the conduit through which -the cooling gases pass from the heat exchange device into the coke container where the pressure within the conduit is less than that outside it, this valve being disposed on the suction side of the circulatin pump where such is provided so that in either case the air is drawn in by the current of cooling gases.

The apparatus illustrated comprises'a con- 45. tainer ato receive the incandescent coke and a steam generator b, the cooling of the coke The object d off by the coke being thus utilized to generator steam. The incandescent coke is introduced through the opening f provided with a cover into the container and is discharged therefrom after being cooled through' an outlet g provided with a suitable controlling oor.
If the coke has been insufiiciently distilled during the distillation process, combustible gases, especially hydrogen, 'may escape into the cooling chambers together with the cooling gases passed through the coke and this may produce explosions within the apparatus. To prevent such explosions, according to this invention the apparatus is provided with an air inlet valve h in the suction pipe of the blower and with an outlet valve between the coke container and steam generator. The air inlet valve ensures a 'constant supply of fresh air to the cooling gases, owing to the low pressure which obtains in the snction pipe, and this air combines with the combustible gases contained in the coke on mixing with the cooling gases and thus preventsthese gases subsequently forming an explosive mixture. The cooling gas outlet valve z' compensates for the increase in the cooling gases so produced and the escape of cooling gases into the atmosphere takes place immediately, as the cooling gas pressu'e at this point is higher than that of the atmosphere. Both the valves b and e' are preferably provided with some adjusting mechanism so that the air supplied is just sufiicient to render harmless the combustible gases present in the coke.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, as communicated to me by my foreign correspondents, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is z 1. Apparatus for cooling incandescen coke comprisin a contaner for the coke, a heat exchanging device connected thereto to form a closed circuit, means for circulating an inert gas in said closed circuit through the' coke container and the heatj exchanging device, and a valved air inlet adapted to admit a small quantity of fresh air to said closed circuit to cause Consumption of any combustible gases given ofl in the container by insufliciently distilled coke escape of gas from the crcuit when air is admtted by the air nlet valve.
