Description
N. M. FAULDS DEVICE FOR PORCH CURTAINS July 10, 1928.
Filed July 21, 1927 ATTORNEY.
erence will be UNITED 1s Patented July 10, 19 28.
DEVICE FOR PORCH (CURTAINS.
i Application filed July 21 This invention relates to improvements for holders of the edges ofporchcurtains or other curtains, and has for an object the provision of novel means fOIQgHIdIDg' the edges of curtains as they are adjusted and for thereafter creating a waterproof jo nt between the curtain and the guide, while at the same time maintaining the curtain in a taut state. I
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combinationof parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in deta1l,re fhad to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several, views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a view in perspect ve of a fragment of a curtain, showing a guide and clamp embodying the invention;
Figure 2 illustrates the clamp in operative position;v
Figure '3 illustrates a vertical sectional view ofthe guideand parts associated with -it; and 1 Figures illustrates a perspective view of one of the clamping elements.
In these drawings, 10- lenotes any suitable type of easing with relation to which the tion,
11 is attached to the cas1ng, and at the edge is, of course,
deviceis mounted, it being understood that theparts are duplicated for each edge of the curtain.
In the present embodiment of the invena molding or angularly formed plate remote from the edge which is anchored to the casing, the plate is shaped to form a guide and clamping portion 12. Near the edge remote from its anchorage to the casing, the plate is connected to a channeled plate 18 by fastenings 14, such as screws,
bolts, or the like, which engage a flange 15 V of the said channeled plate. 7 The channeled plate 13 acts as a guide for a movable clamping element 16, which element preferably. is provided with side flanges 17 and 18 which engage or are confined by theflanges of the channeled plate 13, and the channeled plate intended to be anchored to the casing. I
A. curtain19 has its edges projecting between the clamping element 16. and the guide and clamping portion 12, and means are a similar view with posite ends are oscillatable or;

provided for. moving the element toward r o RICE- 4,4,
andaway from the guide", and clamping por-- I won 12and, in this adjustment, it is intends.v
ed that the curtain shall be flexed, as shown in drawn taut and then clamped. i As a means for moving the clamping ele- 2', in order that the curtain will be ment 16 toward. and away from the portion 12, a bell crank lever 20 is provided and it is oscillatable on a pivot 21 anchored to the flanges of the plate 13. "The short arm of.
the bell crank is-connected to a pivot 22 se- '1 cured in apertures,
flanges of the clamping element have resuch as 23, in the flanges of the clamping element 16, and the said cesses 24 constituting clearances in order that the clamping element may be moved with relation to the flanges ofthe plate 13. The plate 13, as well as the casing, is provided with slots 25 and 26, respectively, and these constitute clearances for the operation of the bell crank.
When th-ebell crank occupies the position g 1 in'which it is illustrated in Fig. 1, the clamping members are separated, whereas when the bell crank is moved to the position shown in Fig. 2, the'curtain is flexed and clamped,
as fully shown.
The clamping element 16 is also provided with supplemental hangers or links comprising plates 27 arranged in pairs and oscillatable on a pivot 28 which are also anchored in flanges of theplate 13, whereas theiroppivots 29 applied to apertures similar to the apertures 23 in the flanges of the clamping element and, of course, theflanges of the clamping element will be provided with recesses, such .as 2 1, in order that the flanges of the clamping element may move with respect to the pivot 28. l 7
From an inspection of the drawing and the foregoing description, it will be apparent that after the parts are assembled and the curtain has its edges inserted between the clamping members, the operation of thebell crank will adjust the parts to the desired position for accomplishing the result sought; I Preferably, the relation of parts is such less length than the width of thespace between the curtain and the guide and clamping portion, of the pivot 22 shall rise above the axis of the pivot 21 at the time the curtain is clamped in order that the bell crank will' be as it is desirable that" the axis i 110.
that the short arm of the bell crank-is of held against movement, except When force is applied'to it.
WVhile the device has been described as particularly applicable to a porch curtain, the inventor does not Wish to be limited to this use, as it has been found in practice that the device may be used with success with curtains of various types;
I claim: 1 In a porch curtain or other'curtain, a
plate having a portion adaptedto coact with a clamping; element, the said portion having a curtaln engaging flange, a clamping element movable With relation to the said flange, the said clamping element comprismg a plate having side flanges With apertures, and recesses, means-ior moving the said clamping element comprising stationary pivots,- 'pi vots on the clamping element arranged in pairs, and rigid elements applied. to the pivotsand operative to swingingly Support the clamping element, including 1116211131601 imparting m'otion toysaid clamp.
