Description

S..F. BOBINSON.
Hand-stamp. No, !67,621, Patented Sept.14,l'875.
14627235369. Invmx SAMUEL F. ROBINSON, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO PHILIP M. OGAN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND-STAM PS.
Specificaton forming part of Letters Patent No. 167362 1, dated September 14, 1875; application filed April 10, 1875.
To all whom it may conoern Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. RoBrNsoN, of the city of Quincy, County of Adams and State of lllinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hand-Stamps for the purpose of printing names, dates, and other devices; and I do further declare the following to be a true and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, Fig. 2 a vertical section, and Fig. 3 an end elevation of the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a hand-stamp in which ordinary printing-type maybe composed, set up, and securely clamped in place for the purpose of printing, the device being so arranged as to aduit of the type being easily removed or rearranged at the will of the operator.
The Construction of the machine is as follows: A, Fig. l, represents the handle fitted to the socket B, the lower portion of which is terminated by a circular plate, G. shown in section, Fig. 2. The under surface of the plate C is made level, and serves the purpose of a hearing for the ends of the type. Its periphery is provided with a screw-thread, which engages with the female screw in the inner portion of the clamp-ring D. Resting upon the plate G are four movable jaws, E, forming, when closed, the frustrum of a cone, its interior being cylindrical for the purpose ol' receivin and clam in the tv e circu-lar rules and other devices for the purpose above mentioned. The clamp-ring D is provided with an opening smaller than the base of the hollow cone formed by the jaws E when closed, and the surface of the opening is provided with a bevel equal to the slope of the eXterior surface of the conical jaws E E, so that when the plate C is screwed downward the jaws E will be forced through the opening, thereby compressing them together in such a manner as to firmly hold thetype or other device for the purpose of printing. In the interior of the cylinder is a circular rule of spring-brass, the ends being beveled or wedge-shaped so as to pass by each other When compressed by the action of the jaws E. This rule is made of the same height as the printing-face of the type, and forms a circular border or line around the type. It also serves the further purpose of a spring to expand and open the jaws E when they are released by the sliding down ward of the clanp-ring D. As many ot' these ooncentric circular rules may be introduced as may be necessary to support the several lines of type required, the center ofinterior ring being filled with circular quadrats, type, and spaces as may be required.
The operation of the machine is as follows If the clamp-ring D be held firmly in the hand, and the handle rotated then by means of the screw on the plate G andclamp-ring D, the pressure on the outside of the jaws E E may be relieved, and the jaws E E eXpanded by the action of the spring-rule F. The desired type may now be set up and arranged. It can then be firmly Secured in place by serewing down the plate G in the clanp ring D, which will compress the jaws E E and firmly hold the type or other device for the purpose of printing. u
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The eombination of the plate G, the clampring D, conieal jaws E, and coneentric springrules F F, the whole combined, arranged, and Operating substantially as described.
SAMUEL F. ROBINSON.
