COMBINATION CIGAR-BOXIIOISTENER AND COVER HOLDER.

This invention relates to attachments for cigar boxes and more particularly to what I term a cigar box moistener and cover holder.

One of the main objects of the invention is to provide an attachment which can be readily applied to a cigar box of standard construction, such attachment being adapted to receive and retain a moistened strip of absorbent material for supplying moisture to cigars within the box. A further object is to provide a device of this character having means cooperating therewith and with the cigar box for holding the lid or cover of the box in open position. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.

The attachment includes an elongated box like casing 1 formed of sheet metal and provided at each end of its rearward wall 1 with a hook element 2. These hook elements are oppositely directed and are disposed for engagement about the end portions of lid a of a cigar box A of known construction. Casing 1 is provided with a slot 3 in its lower wall and extending the full length thereof. The front wall 1* of the casing is provided at each end with an extension which is bent upon itself to form an arm 4 extending forwardly from the front wall of the casing. The forward portion of this arm is turned over upon itself to provide a supplemental arm 5 at the forward end of which is formed a tang 6 which extends inwardly from the supplemental arm 5 toward end wall I; of box A. When the device is applied the supplemental arms 5 fit snugly against the outer face of the end walls 6 of box A and the arms 4 rest upon the upper edges of the end walls of the box. The resiliency of arms 4 urges the arms toward the ends of the box so as to hold the tangs 6 in biting relation with the walls Z), it being understood that the tangs are forced into the end walls of the box when the device is first applied. In this manner the arms 4 and supplemental arms 5 coact with casing 1 and hooks 2 to hold the cover or lid a of the box against downward and forward movement, and the tangs 6 coact with the end walls 7) of the box to hold the cover a against rearward movement. The attachment thus serves to effectually hold the cover of the box in open position. It is also to be noted that the cover fits snugly between the rearward arms of hooks 2 and the rearward wall 1 of easing 1 so as to be embraced thereby in such manner that the box can be lifted by the lid or cover a without danger of breaking the cover or of detaching the same from the box. This feature is of practical importance in that it is a common practice to remove boxes of cigars from dis lay cases by means of the covers of such lioxes.

The casing 1 is adapted to receive a strip 7 of sponge or other suitable absorbent material. This strip of absorbent material is kept moistened with water and air entering the casing through slots 8 at the ends thereof and flows over and through this strip so as to become saturated with the moisture therefrom, this moistened air flowing downwardly through the slot 3 into the box and over the cigars therein which absorb the moisture from the air. In this manner the cigars are kept in a slightly moistened condition so as to prevent them from becoming dry and brittle.

What I claim is:

1. In a device of the character described, a casing adapted for reception of absorbent material and provided with an outlet opening, means for attaching the casing to the cover of a cigar box with said cover in open position, and means for securing the casing to the box.

2. In a device of the character described, a casing having means for attaching the same to a cigar box cover, arms extending forwardly from the casing, and means for securing the arms to the box.

3. In a device of the character described, a casing provided at its ends with rearwardly extending hook elements adapted to fit snugly about the end portions of a cigar box cover, arms extending forwardly from the casing at the ends thereof, and means for securing the arms to the box.

4.. In a device of the character described, a casing, means for attaching the casing to a cigar box cover, arms extending forwardly from the ends of the casing and disposed to rest upon the upper edges of the end walls of the box, and supplemental arms extending forwardly from the main arms and providedhwith tangs for engagement into the end Walls of the box.

5. The combination with a cigar box body and a cover having hinged connection with the body, of a moistening device, means slidable upon the cover for attaching the moisthe body.
