DOOR-OPERATING :onvrcn.
Application filed November 27, 1925. Serial No. 71,727. I
The object of this invention is the provision of simple means actuated by foot pressure whereby to swing a door to open position, so. that a person having both of his arms occupied may pass through the doorway without necessitating the use of his hands in opening the door, and also whereb" the door may be opened in an easier and more expeditious manner than is ordinary.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consistsin the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the drawings I Figure 1 is a front elevation illustrating the application of my improvement.
Figure 2 isa side elevation thereof. Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Figure .1. c
Preferably,-but not necessarily,my im provement is designed for use in connectionwith screen doors or with other doors which are attached to the casings by spring hinges Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates ascreen door, 2 the "door casing, 3the spring hinges which se cure the door in the casing, and a the usual pull handle or knob for the door. In carryng out my invention I secure on a stile of the door below, the pull element 4:, a' keeper 5.
I plate, the straight end 6 whereof projecting beyond the edge of the door; On the vertical trim 7 of the casing 2, at a suitable distance below the keeper 5, I secure the inner'arm of an angle bracket 8. To the outer arm 9 of this bracket I pivot, as at 10, a bar-l1. The bar 11 is rounded at a point adjacent to the center thereof, but has its ends straight, and the upper end is given a half twist, as at 12, and extended to provide a finger 13, that is disposed opposite path of contact with the keeper 6', so that Preferably and as disclosed by the draw 'ings, the keeper is in the nature of an angle the projecting portion 6 of the keeper 5. The opposite end of the bar 11 is also given a half twist and is extended to provide what I will term a, pedal 14. The ,pedall is arranged'at a downward inclination, and the finger 13 is normally contracted by the keeper so that the bar is swung to the position illustrated in Figure 2 of the'drawing when the door is closed. It is merely necessary for a person desiring to pass through the'doorway to press-his foot on the pedal lLwhich will swing the bar 11 in the direction of the casing The finger 13 will thus be forcibly brought against the keeper 6 so that the'door will be swung to open position. The bar ll is so balanced with respect to its pivot that the fingered end 13 thereof is always in the when .the door -1 is-automatically swung to closed-position the keeper 6Iwill contact with the said finger and arrange the device in initial operative position.
Having described the lnvention, I claim Means for opening a door hinged in a cas- 1 ing by the pressure of the foot of a person approachingbthe door comprising an angle keeper secured to the one hinged side of'the door and projecting therebeyond, an angle bracket fixed on the door casing below the keeper,a bar pivotally secured to the outer arm or angle bracket, said bar being bent 'inits upper extension at mid-point and at the pivotal point and the bends being opposite, the extremity of the upper extension having its end formed with a lateral flange providing a finger whichis disposed to be at alltinies contracted by the keeper on the door, and the opposite'lowerend of the bar having a flat angularly disposed projection providing a footpedal;
. I In testimony'whereof I afiiX my signature.
' DANIEL H. SCHLAEGEL.
