WATCHCASE.
Application filed October 22, 1926. Serial No. 143,491.
This invention relates to watch cases and more specifically to strapwatch cases in which 1 provide the strap holding lugs integrally formed with the movement ring, said ring and lugs being made of base metal and entirely covered or concealed when the case is assembled with the movement and the straps.
The objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a watch case having the strap holding lugs formed integral with the movement ring, said ring and lugs made of base metal.
Second, to provide a movement ring having integral strap holding lugs, said ring and lugs being made of base metal and entirely. concealed by precious metal when the case is assembled.
Third, to provide a watch case which eliminates the space between the strap and the case which gives the case and strap a more pleasing jointure, as well'as stronger construction. I 7
Fourth, to provide a :watch case having a movement ring made of base metal and which is provided with integral lugs which eliminates the necessity of soldering independent lugs to said ring, as is now the practice and which prevents any danger of the strap holding lugs being separated from the movement ring, as is the case with the present strap holding lugs.
Fifth, further objects of the invention are to provide a strap or wrist watch case which will be stronger in construction than the present strap watch case and which can be made with a considerable saving of precious metal and one that eliminates the spaces between the straps and the watch case which makesa more pleasing and harmonious connection between the strap and the case.
This invention consists in a watch case movement ring made of base metal and provided with integral strap holding lugs, said lugs and ring being covered up or concealed by the back and bezel which are of precious metal and which snap onto said movement ring. v
The invention further consists in the construction, combination, location and arrangement of parts, as herein set forth and claimed. p
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a plan view of the entire watch bezel covering the strap tion with the crystal and movement re-v moved, parts being broken awayto show the manner of attachment between the movement ring, back and bezel;
Fig. 7 1s a perspective view of the entire watch and showing a portion of the watch straps; and
Fig. 8 is an isometric view of the watch case movement ring.
.In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated and which shows a preferred construction, I provide a strap watch case comprising bezel 1, crystal 2, movement ring 3 and back 4. Referring to movement ring 3, this part is made of base or non-precious metal while-the bezel 1 and back 4 are made of precious metal, such as gold, silver, platinum, etc. 5 represents the watch strap holdis an enlarged side elevation therev ing lugs which are integral with movement 7 ring 3 and, therefore, of base or non-precious metal. Heretofore said lugs 5 were made separate from movement ring 3 and extended outside or beyond bezel 1 and back 4 and for this reason were made or plated with gold or like precious metal. Holes 6 centrally located in the ends of lugs 5 receive the usual sliding pins '7 of strap bars 8, said strap bars containing the usual spring (not shown) for forcing the pins outwardly into engagement with hole 6; It will be observed that when I the parts are assembled with the back 1 andbezel 4 mountedfover movement ring 3 in engagement with each other that the outer sides of hole 6 will be concealed by the bezel 1, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7 and that the inner sides of said holes, as well. as of the lugs 5, will be covered and concealed by'th'e looped'ends, 10, as showncin Fig. 7. Movement ring 3 is substantially rectangular in form and practically theshape shown in the drawings. The'ends of said ring 3 are concave'd or hollowed out at 9 to provide clearance between said ring 3 and strap bars 8 for looped ends 10 of straps 11 in order to pertended portions mit said strap loops toentirely cover and conceal the non-precious metal of movement ring 3 and lugs 5. Annular shoulder 12 located in the bottom 13 of movement ring 3 is slightly undercut or tapered inwardly and is adapted to frictionally receiveannular re- 'ce'ssed flange 14 cut in back 4 and which is correspondingly undercut so that back acan be easily snapped onto movement-ring3 and tightly held thereon. The ends 15 and'16, respectively, of back a have integrally ex- 17 which are provided with "recesses 18 to accommodatelugs of movement-ring?) and are also .provided with upturned walls 18, as clearly shown in Fig.
Bezel. 1 is provided with bezel opening 1'9 and crystal groove 20 which are centrally located in the top thereof. The ends 21 and 22, respectively, of bezel 1 are cut awa'y'to form operings 23, which openings receive the looped ends 10' of-strap 11. Crystal 2 is fitted within crystal groove 20 in bezel 1.
The inner surface 25 of wall 25 o f-bezel 1; the outer periphery 26 is slightly larger than of movement ring 3 so that said bezel is adapted 'to snugly fit over said ring, the lower edge25 of said bezel resting on the outer edge 27 of back a when in assemble-d position as clearly shown in Figs. 2, '3, 6 and 7 g Referring to Fig. 2, ends21 and 22, respectively, of bezel 1- are provided with slightly 1 enlarged portions 28'which snap into engagement with edge 29 of movement ring- 3 whereby said bezel is securely held in fixed relation with saidmovement ring 3 and back .4. The movement (not shown) is held hole 6 in lugs 5.
solder, braze or within central opening 30 in ring 3 by the usual and well-known-methods.
To assemble the watch case, we will assume that the movement has been mounted in opening 30 of movement ring 3.
The next step is to snap back 4, onto movement ring 3. r
Then, after the crystal 2 has been mounted in bezel 1, said bezel is received over movement ring 3 until enlarged portions 28 of said bezel engage edge 29 of said ring and the lower edge 25 of said bezel rests on outer edge 27 of back 4:, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 6.
Then place pin bars 8 withinlooped ends 10 of straps ll'and insert sliding pin 7 within Heret'ofore it has been the practice to otherwise permanently fasten lugs 5 to movement ring or center 3.
' This is not only slow and tedious hand work but is also expensive as'well. W'ith my improved center 3 having the lugs 5 integral therewith, the expensive operation of solder-,
ing is eliminated. The lugs 5 being integral by said back, bezeluand strap.
with movement ring 3 also produces a watch case of stronger constructlon.
An advantage of this invention is thatthe movement ring 3 and lugs 5 can be made of base metal, which is much more economical to use than precious metal, and that bezel 1 and back 4, when snapped onto. said movement-ring 3 entirely covers or conceals said movement ring 3 and lugs 5. Thisconstruction further beautifies' a strap watch case, inasmuch as it eliminates the usual space be- "tween the strap and the: watch case and thereby'gives a more harmonious jointure between the straps and the watch case.
It will be understood that my invention is capable of certain changes and modifications without departing from its scope or spirit as defined in the claims.
