Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined fireplace and stove embodying the 1nvention, the front being lowered to expose the fireplace and form the hearth.

Figure 2 is a vertical, central, transverse sectional view of the device, the full lines showing the front of the fireplace closed and the dotted lines illustrating the position of said front when lowered.

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the fastening means for securing the front when closed.

Figure 4 is a detail sectional view of a portion of the device on the line 4-4 of Figure 1, looking to the rear as designated by the arrows.

The device is removably mounted upon a base which consists of a rectangular frame 1 provided upon the inner side with strips 2 upon which is placed a plate 3 which is also removable. The body of the device is placed upon the plate 3 within the upper portion of the frame. The body comprises a back 4, a front 5, sides 6, and a bottom 7 A partition 8 is spaced from the backd and constitutes the back of the fireplace and a wall of the fire chamber. A top 9 connects the upper edge of the back 4 with the partition 8 and is adapted to receive cooking utensils or analogous articles containing food or drink to be heated. The partition 8, front 5, and side walls 6 extend upwardly and converge to an outlet 10 to which is fitted I a smoke pipe, as indicated by the dotted .I claim is:

The plate 13 is held in closed position by fastening means which includes a frame 15, v

a slide 16, and a stop 17, the latter being secured to the front 5 above and adjacent the opening 12. A lip 18 is provided upon the forward or projecting end of the slide 16' and is adapted to engage the stop 17 and retain the plate 13 in closed position. A

handle 19 projects outwardlyfrom the slide 16 and constitutes a rest for the outer end of the plate 13 when the same is lowered into horizontal position, as indicated most clearly in Figure 1 of the drawings. The slide 16-and stop 17 constitute a latch mechanism for fastening the part 13.

An opening 20 is formed in a side 6 of the body and is closed by means of a door- 21 which is hinged to the body at that side of the opening 20. A draft opening is formed in the side havingethe opening 20 and a short pipe 23 projects inwardly from said opening to supply the air to the middle portion of the fire compartment when the plate 13 is closed. A damper 24 closes the draft opening and is slidable in aframe 25 secured to the side 6 in line with the draft opening. Andirons 26 are located within the fire compartment and are supported upon the bottom 7, and may be removed from the fireplace when the plate 13 is closed and the stove utilized for cooking. When the plate 13 is lowered into horizontal position it constitutes a hearth and when closed confines the heat sothat food and drink may be heated upon the top. The chamber 27 formed in the rear of the fireplace constitutes a hot box and is heated by the direct action of the fire upon the partition or wall 8 separating the chamber 27 from the fireplace.

Having thus described the invention, what 1. body removahly fitted to the frame above the plate and provided With an opening in its front, a plate for closing the opening in the front of the body and pivoted to the base and adapted to be lowered into horizontal position to forin'a hearth, and latch means for securing the plate in closed position and adapted to form supporting means for the outer end of the plate When lowered into horizontal position.
