Application filed March 12, 1926.
This invention relates, generally, to improvements in electric sad irons; and the invention has reference, more particularly, to improvements in electric sad irons provided with means to extravasate steam from its pressing face to dampen the goods undergoing pressing operations.
This invent-ion has for its principal ob ject to provide generally in connection with electric steam irons a novel form and construction of pressing face portion; and the invention has for its further objects to provide a novel construction and arrangement of steam distribution features in connection with the sad irons of the steam extravasating type.
Other objects of this invention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the same.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which 2- Figure 1 is avertical longitudinal section, taken on line 11 in Figure 2, of a sad iron of the steam extravasating type showing one embodiment of the novel features and construction according to this invention; Figure 2 is a horizontal section of the same taken on line 2-2 in said Figure 1; Figure 3 is a transverse vertical section of the same, taken on line 3-3 in said Figure 2; and Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional perspective of a portion of the iron, drawn on an enlarged scale.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the hereina-bove described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to said drawings, the reference character 5 indicates the body portion of the iron, which is preferably in the form of a metallic casting cored to provide an internal steam chamber 6. Secured to the upper portion of said body portion 5 is a hollow top casing 7. Suitably attached to the upper side of said top casing 7 by bail members 8, is a hand grip member 9 by means of which the iron may be grasped and manipulated. Secured on top of said body portion 5, within said top casing 7, is an electrical heating unit 10 of'any suitable form or type adapted to transmit the heat generated thereby to said iron body 5. Connected with the rear end of said top casing 7, but electrically separated therefrom by insulation 11, are the usual. contact terminals Serial No. 94,208.
or pins 12 with which the poles of the heatng unit are electrically connected in circuit in the customary manner. Said contact termmals or pins 12 are adapted to receive, through the usual coupling contacts (not shown), electrical connection with the source 9f electrical energy adapted to serve the iron. Formed in connection with said body portlon 5, so as to extend forwardly from the heel thereof into the steam chamber 6 to ward the toe thereof, is a basin 13 partitioned from said steam chamber interior by s de walls 14. Said side walls 1% are provlded at suitable points with openings 15, spaced above the bottom level of said basin 13, the same providing means of communication between said basin interior and the interior of said steam chamber 6. Said 23111 interior is open at the heel of the iron Secured to the heel of said iron body 5 is a steamintake member 16 provided in its upper end with a chamber 17 serving both as a condensation or water trap and secondary steam generator. Leading into the upper end of said chamber 17 is a steam intake pipe 18, the exteriorly projecting end 19 of which serves as a nipple to receive the connection therewith of a steam delivery conduit or hose (not shown) for delivering steam to the iron from a suitable source of supply. Connected with the bottom discharge opening or passage 20 of said chamber 17 is a steam discharge pipe 21 which projects upwardly into the interior of said chamber 17. The lower end of said steam intake member 16, when assembled with and secured to the heel of the iron body 5, closes the open rear end of said basin 13.
Connected in communication with the discharge opening or passage 20 of the intake .rear and front ferrules 22 and 24; is inner it L) longitudinally split distributer and trap tube 25, the same being deformed to provide spaced apart overlapping inner and outer hmgitudinal marginal portions 26 and 27 forming an upwardly presented lateral emis sion or discharge opening 28, the distributer and trap tube thus formed being spiral in cross section. Also supported by and between said rear and front ferrules 22 and 24, and exteriorly concentric to the inner dis tributer and trap tube 25, is an outer longitudinally split distributer and trap tube 29, the same being deformed to provide spaced apart oi 'erlapping inner and outer longitudi nal marginal portions 30 and 31 forming an upwardly presented lateral emission or discharge opening 32, said outer distributor and trap tube thus torme'd also being spiral in cross section.
The under side of said iron body 5 is of slightly convex conformation, and secured thereto is a pressing face plate 83, which conforms to the convexity of the bottom of said iron body 5, and therebv produces a convex pressing iace surface '34, both in longitudinal as well as in transverse direction. Said pressing face plate 33 is preferably made of nickel steel, although other metals may be used therefor if desired the desideratum being to provide non-corrosive, stainless p-ressing face surface. Said iron body 5 is provided in its under side with steam' conducting channels 35 which are ooen against the inner side of said pressing ace plate 33, and formed in said iron body 5, intermediate its steam chamber 6 and said pressing face plate 33 so as to communicate with said steam conducting channels are downwardly extending steam ducts 36. Said pressing face plate 33 is provided, at suitably spaced intervals andin alinement and communication with said steam conducting channels 35 and steam ducts 3G, with a plurality of steam discharge orifices 37,tbrough which the steam delivered to said steam chamber 6 and circulated in said conducting channels 35 and ducts 36 may be extravasatcd to the goods over which the iron is moved when carrying on pressing operations therewith. Said steam discharge orifices 37 are outwardly flared toward their outer discharge ends at the pressing tace surface 54 of the pressing face plate 33, which is of considerable advantage since it allows the steam to quickly spread out in contact with the goods, and tends to avoid condensation due to restriction.
With respect to the convexity of the pressing face plate 33 and its pressing face surface '34, the same is of considerable advantage both in dry irons as well as in irons of the steam extravasating type, since such conformation gives assurance against accidental displacement of the goods being pressed likely to result in the formation of undesired creases or folds. especial advantage in sad irons of the steam extravasating type, since it tends to allow space intern'iediate thecurvature of the outlying portions of the pressing t'ace surface 34: and the goods, at points Where the orifices 37 are located, for the extravasated steam to spread out over the goods, and thus attain a maximum area of contact with the latter, as well as free discharge tending to avoid tendency ol the steam to condense.
In operation, steam is delivered through the intake member 16 into the distributer and condensation or water trap formed by the split tubes 25 and 29. The peculiar spiral cross sectional shape of the said split tubes 25 and 29 provides means for freely distributing the delivered steam, while at the same time operating to catch and retain any condensation thereof which may occur in the trough-like bottoms of said tubes. 7 The steam escapes from the inner tube 25, through the upwardly presented opening 28 thereof, into the interior of the outer tube 29, thence escaping through the upwardly presented opening 32 of the latter into the interior of the basin I3, whence it passes into the steam chamber 6 ot the iron body through the openings 15 in the side walls of said basin. spective openings 28 and 32 of the tubes 25 and 29 are out of alignment one with another, and consequently in passing out from said tubes the steam is required to travel a devious path whereby ample time and opportunity is given for the separation therefrom of any accompanying condensation. The basin 13 also serves to trap condensation. The steam delivered into the steam chamber 6 is distributed through the ducts 36 to the conducting channels 35, escaping through the steam discharge orifices 37 into contact with the goods, so as to dampen the latter, as the iron is moved back and forth over the goods to press the same.
Having thus described my present invention. I claim 1. In an electric sad iron, a main body having an internal steam chamber, a steam distributor and condensation trap comprising an outer split tube and an inner split tube within said outer tube, said tubes being of spiral shape in cross section with their longitudinal margins in spaced apart overlapping relation, means for delivering steam into said inner tube, a relatively thin pressing face plate afiixed to the bottom of said main body, said pressing face plate having a plurality of suitable disposed steam dis charge orifices, and said iron body having passages affording communication between said steam chamber and said steam discharge orifices.

3. In an electric sad iron, a body having an internal steam chamber, means within and opening into said steam chamber providing a catch-basin, a steam distributer and condensation trap disposed above said catch basin, said distributer and trap comprising an outer split tube and an inner split tube within said outer split tube, said tubes being of spiral shape in cross section with their longitudinal margins in spaced apart overlapping relation, means for delivering steam into said inner tube, said body having in its bottom steam conducting channels substantially parallel to the periphery thereof, said body also having ducts interconnecting said steam conducting channels with said steam chamber, a relatively thin pressing face plate aflixed to the bottom of said main body and adapted to close over said steam conducting channels thereof, and said pressing face plate having orifices through which steam may be extravasated from said steam conducting channels.
4. The combination with a steam sad iron having a steam chamber in the body thereof and provided at its pressing face with dis charge outlets leading from said chamber, of a steam distributer and condensation trap within said steam chamber, comprising an outer split tube and an inner split tube within said outer tube, said tubes being of spiral shape in cross section with their longitudinal margins in spaced apart overlapping relation, and means for delivering steam into said inner tube.
5. The combination with a steam sad iron having a steam chamber in the body thereof and provided at its pressing face with dis charge outlets leading from said chamber, means within and opening into said steam chamber providing a catch basin, a steam distributor and condensation trap disposed above said catch basin, said distributer and trap comprising an outer split tube and an inner split tube within said outer split tube, said tubes being of spiral shape in cross section with their longitudinalmargins in spaced apart overlapping relation, and
means for delivering steam into said inner tube.
