This invention relates to side frames for railway car trucks and more particularly to cast frames with integral journal boxes at the ends thereof.
One of the principal objects of my invention, generally considered, is to provide a cast integral side frame in which the various members thereof are so designed and connected to each other that great strength in proportion to the weight thereof is secured.
An object of 'my invention is the provision of a east side frame for railway car trucks in which the various members are so designed and merged with one another and so varied in cross section that a very economical design is obtained so that lightening the weightof the frame is permissible without sacrificing the necessary strength thereof.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a east side frame for railway car trucks formed with a compression member generally channel shaped in cross section and comprising an upper web portion and depending flanges, the flanges being extended and merging with the roofs of the journal boxes and the web being cut away short of said journal boxes, said frame comprising a tension member, the central portion of which is box shape and the diagonal end portions of which are formed as inverted channels with upstanding ribs from the webs of said channels, said compression and tension members being spaced by strut portions merging at their lower ends with the upstanding ribs of the tension member and at their upper ends with intermediate portions of the compression member.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a east side frame for railway car trucks involvingcompression, tension and bolster column guide members, said guide members serving to space intermediate port-ions of the compression and tension members and merging therewith, the members being so arranged that a window opening is provided therebetween, the compression member being formed channel shape in cross section while the tension member varies in cross section and is formed box shape beneath the window opening and as inverted channel a rib risingfrom the back thereof on either side of the window opening, said rib portions extending outwardly and continued above the journal boxes at the 6 ends of the frame between the depending flanges of the compression member.
Other objects and advantages of the invention pertaining to the particular arrangement and construction of the various parts will become apparent as the description pro ceeds.
Referrin to the drawings illustrating my invention, t e scope whereof is defined by the claims:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cast side frame for railway car trucks embodying my invention, a portion of said frame being shown in section.

Referring to the drawings in detail, similar reference characters designating like parts, there is illustrated a east side frame 1 which, in the embodiment shown, comprises a compression member 2, tension member 3, bolster column guide or strut members 4 and journal boxes 5. Said compression and tension members unite at the ends thereof and are also preferably integral with the journal boxes 5. Intermediate portions of the com pression and tension members are spaced by the bolster column guide portions 4, as illustrated.
In the present embodiment the compression member 2 is formed of inverted U or channel shape with an upper web portion 6 and depending flange portions 7. The lower edges of said flange portions are preferably beaded or provided with outstanding ribs 8. The compression member is preferably con tinued over the journal boxes 5, the flange portions 7 thereof merging with said journal boxes and particularly the roofs 9 thereof.
The ends of said flange portions 7 are preferably curved downwardly and terminate in line with the outer walls 10 of the journal boxes. The web 6 of said compression member is preferably terminated short of the journal boxes, as illustrated particularly at 11 in Figures 1 and 2. The flanges 7 are flared downwardly adjacent the ends thereof and finally merge with the roofs 9 of the journal boxes and the adjacent portions of the tension member, as illustrated.
The tension member 3, beneath the bolster or window opening 12, is formed as a substantially horizontal beam rectangular or box shape in cross sect-ion. Near the lower corners of the bolster opening the lower web 13 of the horizontal portion of the tension member 3 is bifurcated and the outer portions thereof are gradually decreased or tapered in width to form beading or flanges 14 on the depending webs or flanges 15 of the diagonal end portions of the tension member. After the outer portions of the tension member pass beyond the window opening 12, they are continued outwardly and upwardly with the web portion 16 thereof extended straight to join the journal boxes 5, adjacent the upper inner corners thereof, and preferably at the junction of the inner brass lug 17, with the roof 9. It will, therefore, be apparent that the main portions of the tension member 3 change from rectangular or box shape toinverted U or channel section in passing from beneath the bolster opening 12 to the journal boxes 5. Adjacent theintersection with the journal boxes, said web portions 16 join with the depending flanges 7 and beading 8 from the compression member 2 and between said junction and the corresponding journal box 5 said web portions 16 are flared outwardly or increased in width to form triangular reinforcements between the tension member and journal boxes, as illustrated particularly in Figures 1 and 2. The bolster column portions 4 are formed substantially channel shape in cross sect-ion with web portions 18 forming bolster guides and outwardly extending flange portions 19 beaded or ribbed at the edges thereof as indicated at 20.
The lower portions of the web 18 are outwardly offset as at 21 to facilitate the insertion or removal of the bolster and apertured at 22 to allow for core removal. The flanges 19 adjacent the lower portions thereof are converged toward each other and finally joined at 23 and continued as a single web or flange 24 along the transverse web 16 of the diagonal end portions of the tension member 3. Said flange 2st is preferably centrally disposed and extends longitudinally along the web 16 of the tension member. The upper edge of the web or flange 24 is bounded by the rib or beading 25 and is continued upwardly and outwardly between the depending flanges 7 of the compression member, the web 24 serving to unite the roof 9 of each journal box with the corresponding web portion 6 of the compression member and being terminated preferably along a diagonal line extending from the end of said web 6 to the outer corner of the journal box or the brass lug 26 thereof. The ribbing or heading 25 therealong is preferably curved upwardly, as illustrated, to correspond with the increase in depth of the web 24; and extended to merge with the web 6 of the compression member 2.
The web 16 is preferably increased in width where it extends under the window opening 12, so as to provide ample width for the bolster springs, and ma be provided with bosses 27. Those portions 28 of the web 16 extending beyond the depending web or flange portions 15 are preferably braced by triangular reinforcements 29.
The compression member is preferably of lighter section than the tension member because it serves to carry less stress than said tension member. The inner portions of all members are preferably formed thinner than the corresponding outer portions. The reason for this difference in thickness is that east side frames are generally formed with the outer or front face in the upper side. of the mold so that when the metal is poured therein the rear portion of the frame is formed first and as the pouring is continued the metal rises and finally forms the front portion. Unless provision is made to take care of the difference in quality between the metal first poured and that subsequently poured, the front and rear portions of the frame will have. different strength per unit section area and there will be a tendency to stress the outer flanges to a greater degree in proportion to their strength than the inner flanges or inner portions of the frame. By making the inner and outer portions of the frame of slightly different thicknesses the aforementioned trouble is obviated and all portions of the frame are formed of substantially uniform strength, whereby greater economy of material is effected.
It will be appreciated that in accordance with the foregoing disclosure I have devised an improved side frame in which the various ill) members are constructed and united in such a manner that considerable saving is efiected in material required for a. frame of a given strength.
Having thus described the invention, I claim: a
l. A side frame for railway car trucks comprising a tension member, a compression member, bolster guide columns interposed between intermediate portions of said members, journal boxes at the ends of said frame, the compression member being formed as a channel with an upper web and depending flanges, the tension member being formed with diagonal end portions having transverse web portions extending from the lower ends of the guide columns to the roofs of the journal boxes, said web portions being formed with upstanding portions merging at their lower ends with the bolster guide columns and at their upper ends continuing over the'journal boxes between the compression member flanges.
2. A side frame for railway car trucks comprising a tension member, a compression member, bolster guide columns interposed between intermediate portions of said members, journal boxes at the ends of said frame, the compression member being formed as a channel with an upper web and depending flanges, the tension member being formed with diagonal end portions having transverse web portions extending from the lowe'r ends of the guide columns to the roofs of the journal boxes, said web portions being formed with upstanding portions merging at their lower ends with the bolster guide columns and at their upper ends continuing over the journal boxes between the compression member flanges and merging with the web of said compression member.

A side frame for railway car trucks comprising a tension member, a compression member, bolster guide columns interposed between intermediate portions of said members, journal boxes at the ends of said frame, the compression member being formed as a channel with an upper web and depending flanges, the tension member being formed with diagonal end portions having transverse web portions extending from the lower ends of the guide columns to the roofs of the journal boxes, said web portions being formed with upstanding portions merging at their lower ends with the bolster guide columns and at their upper ends continuing over the journal boxes between the compression member flanges and merging with the web of said compression member, the outer ends of said compression member over the journal boxes being curved downwardly and united with the outer walls thereof.

A side frame for railway car trucks comprising a tension member, a compression member, bolster guide columns interposed between "intermediate portions of said members, journal boxes at the ends of said frame, the compression member being formed as a channel with an upper web and depending flanges, the tension member being formed with diagonal end portions having transverse web portions extending from the lower ends of the guide columns to the roofs of the journal boxes, said web portions being formed with upstanding portions merging at their lower ends with the bolster guide columns and at their upper ends continuing over the journal boxes between the compression member flanges and merging with the web of said compression member, the outer ends of said compression member over the journal boxes being curved downwardly and united with the outer walls thereof, the web of said member being cut away short of the points of union with the journal boxes.

A side frame for railway car trucks comprising a tension member, a compression member, bolster guide columns interposed between intermediate portions of said members, journal boxes at the ends of said frame, thecompression member being formed as a channel with an upper web and depending flanges, the tension member being formed with diagonal end portions having transverse web portions extending from the lower ends of the guide columns to the roofs of the journal boxes, said web portions being formed with upstanding central longitudinal web portions flanged at their upper edges, said upstanding web portions continuing over the journal boxes between the flanges of the compression member and serving to rigidify the connection with said journal boxes.

A side frame for railway car trucks e omprising a tension member, a compression member, bolster guide columns interposed between intermediate portions of said members, journal boxes at the ends of said frame, the compression member being formed as a channel with an upper web and depending flanges, the tension member being formed with diagonal end portions having transverse web portions extending from the lower ends of the guide columns to the roofs of the journal boxes, said web portions being formed with upstanding central longitudinal web portions flanged at their upper edges, said upstanding web portions continuing over the journal boxes between the flanges of the compression member and serving'to rigidify the connection with said journal boxes, the opposite ends of said web portions being bifurcated and continued as flanges of the bolster guide columns.

A side frame for railway car trucks comprising a tension member, a compression member, bolster guide columns inte rposed between intermediate portions of sa d members, journal boxes at the ends of" said frame, the compression members being formed as a channel with an upper web and depending flanges, the tension member being formed with diagonal end portions having transverse web portions extending from the lower ends of the guide columns to the roofs of the journal boxes, said web portions being formed with upstanding central longitudinal web portions formed with transverse flanges at their upper edges. said upstanding webs and flanges being flared upwardly at their outer ends, the webs being continued alongthe journal box roofs and the flanges extending to the web of the compression member and merging therewith.
8., A side frame for railway car trucks comprising a tension member, a compression member, bolster guide columns interposed between intermediate portions of said members, journal boxes at the ends of said frame, the compression member being formed as a channel with an upper web and depending flanges, the tension member being formed with diagonal end portions having transverse web portions extending from the lower ends of the guide columns to the roofs of the journal boxes, said web portions being formed with upstanding central longitudinal web portions formed with transverse flanges at their upper edges. said upstanding webs and flanges being flared upwardly at their outer ends, the webs being continued along the journal box roofs and the flanges extending to the web of the compression member and merging therewith, the opposite ends of said webs and flanges being bifurcated at their inner ends and continued as ribbed flanges of the bolster guide columns.

A side frame omprising tension for railway car trucks and compression members, bolster guide columns interposed between intermediate portionsof said members forming. a window opening therebetween, journal boxes integrally connected at the ends of said frame, the compression member being channel shape in cross section with an upper web and depending flanges, the tension niember comprising a substantially horizontal portion extending under the window opening and diagonal end portions, said diagonal end portions being formed with transverse web portions extending from the lower corners of the window opening to the roofs of the journal boxes, said web portions being formed with depending flanges extending from beneath the window opening to the journal boxes and with upstanding portions merging at their lower ends with the bolster guide columns and at their upper ends continuing over the roofs of the journal boxes between the flanges of the compression member.

A side frame for railway car trucks comprisin a tension member, a compression mem er, bolster guide columns spacing intermediate portions of said members and spaced to provide a window opening therebetween, journal boxes at the ends of said frame, said con'ipression member being channel shape in cross section with an upper web and depending flanges along the sides thereof, said tension member having diagonal end portions formed as inverted channels and continuing from the lower corners of the window opening to the journal boxes, said diagonal portions being formed with upstanding portions along the webs thereof merging at their lower ends with the bolster guide columns and at their upper ends continuing over the journal boxes between the compression member flanges and merging with the web of said compression member, the outer ends of said compression member over the journal boxes being curved downwardly and united with the outer walls of the journal boxes, the web of said member being cut away short of the points of union with the journal boxes.

A side frame for railway car truclt's comprising tension and compression members, bolster guide columns interposed between intermediate portions of said members withthe formation of a window opening therebetween, journal boxes at the ends of said frame, said compression member being channel shaped in cross section with an upper web and depending flanges, said tension member being formed with diagonal end portions having transverse webs extending from the lower corners of the window opening to the roofs of the journal boxes, said web portions having depending flanges extending from beneath the window opening to the journal boxes and upstanding central longitudinal web portions flanged along their upper edges and con tinued over the journal boxes between the flanges of the ompression member and adapted to rigidity the connection with said journal boxes.

A side frame for railway car trucks formed with tension and compression members, bolster guide columns interposed between intermediate portions thereof and forming a window opening tberebetween, journal boxes integrally umneeted at the ends of said frame, said tension member having diagonal end portions with transverse web portions extending from the lower corners of the window opening to the tops of the journal boxes, said web portions being formed with depending flanges extending from beneath the window opening to the journal boxes and with upstanding central longitudinal web portions flanged along, their upper edges, said flanged web portions being flared upwardly at their outer ends and continued along the journal box roofs,
, said frame, the compression member being formed with depending flanges, the tension member being formed with diagonal end portions having transverse web portions extending outwardly and upwardly to the journal boxes, said web portions being formed with angularly disposed portions extending along said diagonal end portions and continuing over the journal boxes between the flanges of the compression member.

A side frame for railway car trucks comprising a tension member, a compression member, and journal boxes at the ends of said frame, the compression member being' formed with a plurality of depending flanges, the tension member being formed with end portions extending diagonally upward and outward from the intermediate portion thereof and formed with a transverse web extending to the journal boxes, said web being formed with a flange portion extending from its upper surface and continued beyond said web between the compression member flanges.
15. A side frame for railway car trucks comprising a tension member, a compression, member, and journal boxes at the ends of said frame, the compression member being formed with an upper web provided with flanges, the tension anember comprising diagonal end'portions having a transverse web extending to the journal boxes, said web being formed with an upstanding portion I flanged at its upper edge which is continued beyond the ends of the web along the journal box roofs and extended with the flanged portion thereof merging with the web of the compression member.

A side frame for railway car trucks comprising a tension member, a compression member, and journal boxes at the ends of said frame, the compression member being formed as a channel with a web and flanges depending therefrom, said tension member being provided withdiagonal end portions having transverse webs extending to the journal boxes, said web portions being formed with substantially central longitudinal upstanding web portions provided with transverse flanges along their upper edges, said upstanding webs with their flanges being bent upwardly at their outer ends, the Webs being continued over the roofs of the journal boxes and the flanges extending to the web of the compression member and merging therewith.
17. A side frame for railway car trucks comprising a tension member, a compression member, and journal boxes at the ends of said frame, the compression member being formed with flanges depending therefrom, said tension member being provided with inclined end portions having transverse Webs extending to the journal boxes, said webs being formed with longitudinal upstanding web portions provided with flanges along their upper edges, said flanges being bent upwardly at a greater angle and extended to merge with the compression member at their outer ends, the webs being continued over the roofs of the journal boxes.
