DOOR OPERATING AND LOCKING MECHANISM.

The present invention relates to door operating and locking mechanism.
The present invention constitutes an improvement over the structure described and claimed in the application of Gabriel Madland and William W. Darrow, Serial No. 48,458, filed August 6th, 1925, for improvements in door operating and sealing mechanism. The present invention relates primarily to door operating and locking mechanism for sliding doors such as are used on freight cars.
An object of the present invention is to provide a simple door operating and looking mechanism which maybe readily applied to railroad freight cars as now desi ed and used and which has improved e ciency over prior structures.
A further object is to provide door operating and locking mechanism which will not only facilitate the opening and closing of a frei ht car door, but will be effective in holding said door in ventilating position.
A further object is to provide door closing mechanism having simple and effective means for holding the door in closed osition to permit the ready insertion o the latching bolt in latching position.
A further object is to provide door operating and locking mechanism which is well adapted to meet the needs of commercial service.
Further objects will appear as the de scription proceeds.

The numeral 10 indicates a side wall of the car. and the numeral 11 indicates a sliding door. One ed e of the doorway for said sliding door is de ned by the door jamb indicated in Figure 3 by the numeral '12. Stationarily mounted upon the door jamb 12 is the bracket 13, which maybe secured to said jamb and to the side of thecar b any preferred means, bolts 14-14 being i lustrated for that purpose. The bolts 14-14 have semi-round heads resented exteriorly of the car. The nuts or said bolts are presented inwardly of the car. Mounted u on the sliding door 11 is the bracket 15, w ich is also supported by bolts 14-44 having semi-round heads presented exteriorly of the car, the holding nuts being presented interiorly.
The bracket 13, carried bg the jamb 12, is provided with the outstan ing in or stud 16, which has an enlarged head 1 and which forms a pivotal support for the member 18. The bracket 13 is provided with the lug 19 adapted to engage the under side of the member 18 to limit movement of said member 18 in a clockwise direction. Said member 18 is provided with the slot 20, which slot receives the pin 16. One extremity of the member 18 comprises a catch portion 21. and the opposite extremity of said member 18 comprises the latching portion 22.
Pivotally carried by the bracket 15 is the operating lever 23 having the handle por tion 24 and the operating portion 25. The operating portion 25 includes the toe 26, adapted to engage within the hooked over portion 27 of the member 18. The operatportion 25 of the lever 23 is also provided with the camming surface 28, which camming surface has a progressively increasing radius about the axis of swing of the lever 23. The stationarily mounted bracket 13 has the abutment portion 29. It will be clear without detailed explanation that counterclockwise movement of the lever 23 as the parts are viewed in Figures 1 and 2 will result in a camming action between the operating portion 25 of the lever 23 and the abutment portion 29 of the stationarily mounted bracket 13, resulting in the opening movement of the door 11. When the door 11 is open and it is desired to move said door to closed position, the closing movement may be accom lished by engaging the toe portion 26 of ,t e lever 23 within the hooked over portion 27 of the member 18. A clockwise movement of lever 23 will result in the effectual forcing of the door to its closed position. The above described functions are described and claimed in the Creer Patent No. 1,544,376.
It has been common practice in freight cars to provide a hasp fastener, a hasp fastening strap and a locking bolt. One of. the tricks to which car thieves have resorted has been to saw through the material providing the bottom part of the slot in the locking bolt in which the car seal is mounted. enabling a thief to open the car door without breaking the seal, and, after he has left the car, putting the parts back in the positions in which he found them, the saw cut being quite inconspicuous and very likely to be overlooked by the car inspectors. The present' invention provides a structure which will effectually prevent any such procedure on the part of a car thief. As noted above, the member 18 includes the locking bolt 22. Sadd. locking bolt is adapted to reciprocate in an aperture 30 provided by the bracket 13. Formed integral with the lever 23' is the projecting portion 31,. providing an aperture 32,. adapted, when the door 11 is in closed position, to register with the opening 30 in the bracket 13. Said projecting portion 31 includes the bottom: member 33 adapted. to underlie the lower extremity of the locking. bolt 22. The locking bolt 22 is provided near its lower extremity with the slot 34 adapted to register with the slot 35 in the projecting portion 31 of the lever 23 when the door 11 is in closed position. Said registering slots 34 and 35 are adapted to receive the usual sealing strip. The bottom member 33 servesto prevent the car thief from gaining access to the bottom end of the bolt 22 to perform the. sawing. operation above referred to;
By reason of. the fact that the present construction involves the use. of a single member. as a catch member for cooperating with the lever 23 and as. a locking bolt, it is advisable to provide means whereby the door 1.1 will be held in closed position independently of the member 18 when said member is being moved to a position to perform its latching functions. By reference to Figure 4 it will be noted that the projecting portion 31 of the lever 23 is provided. with the finger 36 adapted. to have hooking engagement with the lower extremity of. the abutting portion 29 of the bracket 13. It will be clear that after the door 11 has been moved to closed position, or substantially to closed position by the lever 22., the finger 36- will be in wedging position behind. the portion 29 of the bracket 13, whereby said finger 36 will hold. the door 11 from springing or sliding open. By exerting a slight force upon the operating member 23 in a clockwise direction, the operator may therefore hold the door 11 closed independently of the member 18, giving the operator plenty of opportunity for swinging said member 18 from its full line-position shown in Figure 4 to its dot-ted line position as shown in said figure.
The present invention presents the advantage that thedoor may be conveniently held in ventilating position,.that isslightly open position. By reference to Figure 3 it will be noted that the operating member 23 is loosely mounted upon the stud 16, whereby to be. capable ol a rocking movement in a direction transverse to the plane of the car side. For this PULPOHQ the stud 16 maybe tapered, the diameter of saidstud 16 decreas ing from the face of the bracket 15 toward the outer extremity of said stud 16.. The ap erture. in the operating lever 23 which receives said stud may be cylindrical in. CO1L- tour, or may be reversely tapered to the taper: of the stud 16. A washer 3T insures the re tention of the operating lever 23 upon. said stud 16. By reason of the loose connection between the operating lever and the stud 16,. said operating lever may be swung from the position shown in Figure l in a counterclockwise direction past the bracket 13 and the parts carried; thereby to the position indicated by full lines in Figure 2. The bracket 15 is provided with the. abutment portion. 38,. which,. as noted in Figure 2,. is adapted. to form a support for the operating lever 23 for holding same in the position shown in Figure2. Said operating lever 23 is provided with. the outstanding portion 39 havingv the aperture L0. As indicated in Figthe member 13 may be disposed within said aperture whereby to hold the door 11 in. open position.
Though a preferred embodiment of the present invention has been described.- in detail, many modifications will. occur to those skilled in the art. It is intended to cover all such modifications that fall within the scope of the appended. claims.

In a railway car, in combination, a rela tively stationary abutment. member and means cooperatvely associated with said abutment member for selectively opening and closing a car door,.said means including a swinging catch member, said catch member having integral therewith a locking. bolt adapted. to cooperate with said opening. and closing means to hold said car door. in a predetermined position.
2. In combination, a relatively stationary member of a car, a sliding door member, and door opening and closing means located upon said members, said means including a lever having a working projection, said relatively stationary member being provided with a swinging catch member adapted to cooperate with said working projection, said swinging catch member having a locking bolt integral therewith, said lever having a portion integral therewith adapted to have obstructing relationship with said locking bolt when said lever is in door closing position.
3. In combination, a relatively stationary frame member, a relatively movable door member, and means for selectively openin said door or closing said door and for hol ing said door in closed position, said means including a swinging catch member upon one of said members and a lever upon the other of said members, said lever having a working projection for cooperation with said catch member for moving said door to closed position, said catch member having a locking bolt integral therewith, said lever having a portion adapted to abut against said locking bolt when said locking bolt is in operating position and said lever is in door closing position to hold said door member against opening movement.
4. In combination, a relativelv stationary frame member, a relatively movable door member, and means for selectively opening said door or closing said door and for holding said door in closed position, said means including a reciprocable and swinging catch means upon one of said members and a lever upon the other of said members, said lever having a working portion adapted to abut against said catch means in the closing movement of said door member, said catch means being provided with a bolt integral therewith adapted to abut aga'nst a portion of said lever when said bolt is in operative position and said lever is in door closing position to hold said door member against opening movement.
5. In a railway car, In combination, a rela tivelv stationary frame member, a relatively movable door member, and means for forcing said door to closed position and for holding said door in closed position, said means including a swinging catch means upon one of sa d members and a lever upon the other of said members. said catch means having a bolt integraltherewith and means upon said lever constituting an abutment for said bolt, said abutment means and said bolt having apertures adapted to register with one another for the reception of a sealing member, said abutment means including a portion underlying said bolt and having pro tected relationship with said bolt to prevent the sawing of said bolt to remove said sealing member. 7

In a railway car, in combination, a relatively fixed member, a relatively movable door member, combined catch and bolt means swingingly carried by said fixed member, and an operating lever carried by said door member, said lever being provided with a pair of outstanding portions adapted to cooperate with said means for holding said door in either of two selectable positions.

In a railway car, in combination, a frame member, a movable member cooperating therewith, combined catch and bolt means slidingly and s'wingingly carried by one of said members, a lever carried by the other of said members and adapted to cooperate with said means, said lever having a plurality of projecting portions ada ted to cooperate with said means for hol ing said members selectively in either of two alternative positions. 7
8. In a railway car, in' combination, a
frame member, a movable member coo er- .ating therewith, combined catch and olt means slidingly and swingingly carried by one of said members, a lever carried by the other of said members and adapted to co- 0 crate with said means, said lever having a p urality of projecting portions-adapted to cooperate with said means for holding said members selectively in either, of two alternative positions, said lever being carried by its corresponding member with a loose connection, whereby said lever may be swung throughout a relatively large part of a circle without interference with the other of said members.

In combination, a frame member, a movable member, a reciprocating bolt carried by one of said members, a lever carried by the other of said members. said lever having a pair of aperturedportions adapted to cooperate with said bolt to hold said members in either of two selectable positions relative to one another.
10. In combination, a frame member, a
movable member, a reciprocating bolt carried by one of said members, a lever carried by the other of said members, said lever having a pair of apertured portions adapted to cooperate with said bolt to hold said members in either of two selectable positions relative to one another, said lever having a loose connection with its corresponding member, whereby said lever may be swung in planes transverse to its normal plane of swinging movement to avoid interference with the other of said members.

In combination, a frame member, a movable member, a reciprocating bolt carried by one of said members, a lever carried by the other of said members. said lever having a pair of apertured portions adapted to cooperate with said bolt to hold sa d members in either of two selectable positions relative to one another,one of said apertured portions of said lever and said bolt being all when said bolt is in locking. position to guard said bolt.

In combination, a frame member, a movable member, a reciprocating bolt carried by one of said members, a lever carried by the other of said members, said lever having a pair of apertnred portions adapted to cooperate with said bolt to hold said members in either of two selectable positions relative to one another, said movable member being provided with abutment means for holding one of said apertnred portions in position to receive said bolt.

In combination, a frame member. movable member, a reciprocating bolt carried by one of said members, a lever carried by the other of said members, said lever having a pair of aperturedportions adapted to cooperate with said bolt to hold said members in either of two selectable positions relative to one another, saidv movable member being provided with abutment means for holding one of said apertured portions in position to receive said bolt, said lever having a loose connection with said movable member, whereby said lever may have a swinging movement transversely to the normal plane of swing of said lever, whereby to avoid interference with the; other of said members.
14. In door operating and locking mechanism, in combination, a frame member, a relatively movable member adapted to cooperate therewith, a combined: catch and locking member pivotally carried by said frame member, an operating lever mounted upon said relatively movable member, said combined catch and locking member comprising a unitary member adapted to have alternative operating and locking functions, said lever being provided with means having hooking engagement with said framemember when said lever is in door closing position.
15. In a railway car, in combination, a relatively fixed frame member, a movable door member, a combined catch and locking member carried by said frame member and an operating lever carried by said door member and adapted to have cooperative relationship with said combined catch and locking member for moving said door member to closed position, said lever being pro vided with means having hooking engagement with said frame member when said lever is in door closing position whereby to hold said door member closed.
16 In a railway car, in combination, a relatively fixed frame member, a movable door member, a combined catch and locking member carried by said frame member and ammo? door member, a combined catch and locking member carried by said frame member and an operating lever carried by said door member and adapted to have cooperative relationship with said combined catch and look ing member for moving said door member to closed position, said lever being provided with a portion having hooking engagement with said framemember when said lever is in door closing position, said lever being provided with an abutment portion adapted to cooperate with said combined catch. and locking member for locking said door in closed position, said lever being provided with a holding portion adapted to. cooperate with said combined catch and locking member for holding said door in open position.

In a railway car, in combination, a relatively fixed frame member, a movable door member, a combined catch and locking member carried by said frame member and an: operating lever carried by said door member and adapted to have cooperative relationship with said combined catch and locking member for moving said door member to closed position, said lever being provided with a portion having hooking engagement with said frame member when said lever is in door closing position, said lever being provided with an abutment portion adapted to cooperate with said combined catch and locking member for locking said door in closed position, said lever being provided with a holding portion adapted to cooperate with said combined catch and locking member for holding said door in open position, said door member being provided with abutment means for supporting said lever when said lever is in position to hold said door in open position.
