Description

v May 29, 1928.
V 1,671,876 W. C. STEWART GATE LATCH 7 Filed Aug. 10, 1925 William (flaw;
INVENTOR I ATTORNEY WITNESS:
Patented May 29, 1928.
. N STATES OF J The wimm ooY sTnwAnT, or ,SQJITHCABOLINA GATE LATont.
Application filed August 10, 1925. Serial No. 49,433.
The object of this invention is the provision of a simply constructed cheaply manufactured automatically gates, in which the latch bar may be locked to hold the gate closed, and likewise locked to hold the gate in release position.
The drawing which. accompanies and which forms part of this application illustratesthe improvement, and where1n:--
Figure 1 is a plan view cordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is an edge view thereof. Figure is a sectional View on the line 3-3 of Figure l. Figure 4 is a plan View showing a gate latched by the improvement.
As disclosed by Figure 4 of the drawing, a gate 1 is hingedl connectedto a post 2 and is designed to abut, when in closed posiwith a strip 3 on an abi itment post 4.
ti on,
The fixed element of my improvement comprises flanged in one direction, flangebeing reinforced by a weight 7 arranged between the bar and the said flange. flange contacts with one face of the abutment post 4 and has passed therethrough securing elements 8. By reference to Figure 4 of the drawing it will be noted that the from the strip 3. The bar has its outer end formed with a right angular extension in the nature of an elongated lug 9, the same being directed toward the hinge post 2. The lug 9 is bifurcated to receive therein a metal bar 5 having its inner end 1 one end of a latch plate 10. The plate is pivoted in the lug as indicated by the numeral 11, and the lug, to one side of the pivot has its bifurcated portion provided with an opening 12, the purpose of which will be presently apparent.
The latch plate 12 is infiuencedto outward swinging with res ec t to the supporting her 5 through the me 111m of a spring 13. The
spring is sustained between the latch plate and the supporting bar through the medium of a U-shaped bail 14 that has its legs passing through and secured on the bar 5. The
opposite end of the, bail passes through a slot 15 in the latch plate 10, and passi'ng transversely through this said opening there is a pin 16 providing a guide element for operated latch for or a latch in ac as at 6,.the said;
bar is secured a suitable distance latch plate 10 under the influence of the spring 13. y i
The normal position of the latch late is as shown in Figures 1 ands, and t e gate 1 when swung to closed position, will contact with the latch plate to move the same on its pivot against the tension of the spring 13 to permit of the gate being swung c osed. The spring, thereafter, will again swing the latch plate to normal gate holdin position.
WVhen it is desired to hold the atch plate against or in a plane with that of the supporting bar 5, the latch plate is swung toward the bar, and aremovable element, such as a pin 17, is passed through the openings 12 inthelug 9 to contact with the inner face of the latch plate. The gate may be easily opened by pressure against the nection with the drawing, will fully set.
forth the simplicity of my construction, I desire it understood that I am not to be restricted to the precise details herein set forth, and hold myself entitled to such changes therefrom as fairly fall within the scope of what I claim.
Having describedthe invention, I claim .1. Agate latch com rising a bar having an angle end which is xed to one side of an abutment post, a reinforcing rib e, with an angularly disposed bifurcated lug directedtoward the hinge post, a latch plate having one end pivoted in said lu a spring between the bar and latch plate or swings ing the latter angularly with respect to the former and in gate contacting position, a bailproviding a guide for the spring fixed to the bar and slidable through the latch plate, a pin carried by the latch plate and passing t rough the bail, said lug having an opening therethrough, and a pin designed position.
2. A gate latch comprising in combinafor the said bar having its outer end formed tion, a bar having an attaching flange at to be secured to the abutan ofi'set bifurcated one end adapted nient post for the gate,
lug projecting from the other end of the 5 bar, a latch Elate arranged at one side of said bar and said bifurcated lug, between the bar and latch ly holding the latter in t aving one end pivoted within a coil spring interposed late and-normale path of move- WILLIAM COY STEWART.
