The drum is tensioned by rotating the same through the handle 26 so as to wind the cable thereon, and such movement imparts no power to the drive shaft through the travel of the pawl over the ratchet face, while an opposite movement of the drum through the weight member causes the pawl to engage a ratchet tooth and impart driving motion to the feed shaft.
The control of this feed shaft is effected by an improved construction of governor comprising a cylinder 27 having a piston 28 therein with itsrod 29 extended in opposite directions and provided with stops 30 to limit the extent of the piston travel. This cylinder is formed with a by-pass 31 cominunicating with its opposite ends beyond the limit of piston travel and provided with a cut-off valve 32 adjustable to close the by- "pass when the parts are not in operation. 30'

In the normal operation of the machine the cut-off valve is opened and the control is purely through the pressure valve.
The top of the generator may be formed with the usual feed opening 41 closed by a cap 42 clamped in position by a screw 43 mounted in the bracket 44.
The operation of the invention will be apparent from the foregoing description from "which it will be seen that the shaft is directly driven from the drum under tension and the speed and continuation of its movement accurately controlled by a simple valve JtOllOWlllg claims.

A'governor for an acetylene generator comprising a feed shaft, a driving drum operatively connected to said shaft, a cylinder and piston governor connected to said shaft and provided with a by-pass communicating at opposite sides of the piston, and a valve controlling said by-pass and having means adapted for actuation -by the-gas pressure within the generator.
2. A governor for an acetylene generator comprising a feed shaft, a driving drum operativelyjconnected tosaid shaft, a cylinder and piston governor connected to said shaft and provided with a by-pass communicating at opposite sides otthe piston, a valve con trolling said bypass and having means adapted for actuation by the gas pressure within the generator, and a cut-off valve operating in said by-pass to prevent movement of the parts. a
3. A governor for an acetylene nerator comprising a feed shaft, a driving rum 0peratively connected to said shaft, a cylinder and piston governor connected to said shaft and provided with a by-pass communicating at opposite sides of the iston, a'controlling valve operating in sai by-pass and connected to a diaphragm ada ed to be exposed to the gas pressure wit in the genera- (or, and a spring for normally opening said valve.
4. A governor for an acetylene generator comprising a feed shaft, 0. driving drum operatively connected to said shaft, acylinder and piston overnor connected to said shaft and provi'ed with a b -pass communicating at opposite sides ot the piston, a valve controlling said by-pass and having means adapted for actuation by the gas pressure within the generator,a iston rod extending from said cylinder, an a pit-man connected with said rod and to a crank pin upon the feed shaft.
5. In a generator having a feed shaft, a crank member on said shaft, a governor connection from said member, a clutch disk on said member having a ratchet face a coopcrating driving drum having a pawl cooperating with said face, means for tensioning said drum by its rotation in a direct-ion opposite to its driving relation, a pitman extending from said crank pin,a cross head slidably mounted and connected to said governor connection, a governor comprising a necting the ends of the cylinder and having means actuated by the gas pressure of a generator for controlling the movement of said piston.
6. In a generator having a feed shaft, :1
