This invention relates "to improvements in molds for ingot molds. In making molds of the type above mensome in accordance with the practice of the prior art, it has always been customary to use asolid mold and a solidcore and line the mold with molders earthin order to provide for the molding of lugs and eyes on the exterior of the mold so that suitable handlin apparatus may be connected with the-mol in use duringthe making of ingots. This operationrequires a substantial number of men for lining the molds with the earth in preparing the mold i'orfmaking aningot mold in addition to a large amountof labor in removing the ingot mold and cleaning both the ingotmold and the mold therefor, at the endof each operation.
It is the object of the present invention to substantially simplify the methodof making ingot molds by providinga special form of mold whereby the eyes and lugs may be provided on the ingot mold in the making thereof Without using fmolders earth and by molding directly in the main mold and thereby eliminating a large amount of labor incident to the making of these ingot molds. *The invention comprehends numerous other objects residing inthe detailsof construction and association of parts which are more particularly pointed out in the following description and in the claims directed to a preferred form of the invention, it be ing understood however, that various 4 changes may be made in-the size, shape and arrangement of these parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as herein set forth. This invention is specially designed for the making of ingot molds as distinguished from molds for making the ingots themselves. This mold comprises a pair of cooperating half sections '1 and 2-respectively which *are formed at their meeting faces with outwardly extending flanges 3 provided with a plurality of registering. openings 4 adapted'to receive slotted bolt members 5 which in turn receive wedge members 6 for locking the mold sections in assembled relation as shown in the drawing.
The mold sections 1 and 2 are each formed with a molding recess 7 shaped to provide the desired contour to the outer wall of the ingot mold; These recesses have tapered side walls as indicated at 8 to permitthe ready removal of the ingot mold after casting fromeach half section 1 and 2 of the mold. l I

Openings 12-are formed in the central portionof each side wall of the mold sections 1 and 2 which are plugged as shown in Fig. '5 during the making of the ingot mold, the plugs being removable so that the plunger of an ejecting apparatus may be from each :mold section in the event it sticks.
1 The mold sections land 2 are provided in the central portion of each side with lugs 13 so thateach section may be suitably gripped by the ejecting apparatus for supporting the mold sections during the ejection of the ingot mold formed therein. These mold sections 1 and 2 are further formed with lugs 14 at the ends to receive the h(' isting apparatus used to transport the mold sections from place to place.
The core for the ingot molds indicated at 15 which is made in the shape of the, ingot and is provided with a tapered section 16 to form an ingot mold commonly known as a bottle type. v
In making an ingot mold for this improved mold structure the bail 11 is placed in the groove 10 and the mold sections 1 and2 assembled as shown in 1 and 2 with thcbail locked in position between the sections by securing the slotted bolts in the openings 4 with the Wedges 6. The open ingot mold as shown in F ig; 3. This metal will flow into the recesses 9 formed the mold sections when locked in cooperative position so that the lugs will be cast onto themold body. The mold; may then be re moved with the metal cast therein to permit sufiicient cooling andhardening of the ingot mold after which the mold sections 1 and 2 may be readily removed by removing the wedges 6 of the bolts and then separating thesections l and 2, 'fl'OIll the ingot mold using the ejecting apparatus when necessary. The ingot mold with the core is then removed to a suitable point and the core removed withsuitable ejecting apparatus already well known in the art.
The construction of theingot mold in sections thereby permits the ready positi ning of the bail and the formation of the lugs on the ingot mold and the easyremoval oft-he mold sections fromt-he ingot mold after formation which entirely eliminates the use of Sandor other formof moldeflsearth forthe making oi? the ingot mold andalso all of the labor in connection with the molding of the sand in preparing the ingot mold and the cleaning of the molds as now required for the making of these ingot molds. The provision of the lugs 13 and the openings 12 also permits of the ready attachment of an ejecting apparatus to each mold section for readily ejecting the ingot mold from the section.

prising a pair of duplicate sections adapted mold opening at each end thereof and withv in which to pour the material for molding the body portion of an ingot mold and a core disposed longitudinally in the hollow portion of the outside mold in spaced rela-' tion from the walls of each section and hay ing one end extending outwardly of said,
outside mold whereby to form a tubular ingot mold within said outer mold upon the threading of the material poured therein, the adjacent portions of the abutting faces of said sections being formed with cooperating laterally disposed recessescommunieating with said first named recesses and adapted to form lugs on the outer face of the ingot mold. 2 i

An outside mold for ingot molds comprising a pair of mold sections formed of rectangular block members adapted to be secured together in assembled relation, each section having a longitudinal channel in one face thereof, the side walls of said channel being inclined inwardly toward the bottom thereof, said channel cooperating to form a hollow bore through said outside mold and opening at each end thereof whereby to receive ingot molds forming material poured in one end thereof for molding the body portion of an ingot mold and a core disposed longitudinally in said bore in s aced relation from the walls thereof and iaving one end extending outwardly of said outside mold whereby to form a tubular ingot mold within said outside mold, upon the setting of the material toward their end.
