ANTHONY GEORGE-TRAEGER AND aosnrn JOHN TRAEGER,

COMBINED END GATE AND sooor nonnnronlwaeon oxes.
Application filed January 19, ,1327. Seria1 Noi 162,104.
This invention relates to combined end gates and scoop boards for wagon boxes and has for its primary ob ect to provldean end gate scoop board construction particularly adapted for grain wagons so that the grain may be readily discharged from the wagon or to facilitate the proper loading of the A 'further object resides in the provision r ofsu ch a combined end ga-teand scoop board that is of extremely simpleconstruction inexpensive of manufacture and installation and that comprises means whereby the board may berigidly secured to the wagon box and wherein the same may be readily released at its-upper or lower end to facilitate loading or unloading of the wagon box.
The invention further aims to dispense 1 with all, cleatsand bars within the wagon box which is a great disadvantage inthe .use of end gates andscoop boards now in use for the reason that the, grain will invariably catch behind or in front of said cleats or bars resulting in the ineflicient operation of the board to open orclosed position. 1
the rear end of the box disclosing the end gate in such a position as to provide a loading scoop board.
Figure 3 is a similar view disclosing the board 1n closed pos1t1on.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevation ofthe board end of the wagon, the board per se being disclosed in dottedlines as being swung away from the wagon box at its lower end so as to facilitate the unloading of the box.
t Figure 5 is a detail perspective of one of.
the upper corners of the board end of the box, the board being removed therefrom, and
v Figure 6 is a ,top plan View of said corner disclosing the adjacent board locking bar in full line closed position andin dottedline Ope p s tion; fl' Now having particular reference tothe drawings, 5'designates a wagon box open at itsreariendland providediat said rear end and at its outer sides with verticalangle bars 6- 6. The end board 7 is of generally conventional construction" and is provided at its opposite vertical edges with inwardly directed wings 8 8 that engage within the box 5 forproviding atightfitbetween the sides of the end board andthe sidesof the box and also for guiding the grain into the box when the board is used for. grain loading-purposes as indicated in FigureQ;
V The outer side of therend board 7 is prowith horizontal cleats l lfll between the center of which and said end board. are pivotally mounted, hand Ilevers; 10 10. Pivoted to thesejhand levers at opposite sides of their pivotal connections are oppojsitelyfextending bolt bars li -11; 1111, ithe outer ends of the lowerx'pair offiwhich are, adapted for engagement within sockets 1212 formed in the sides of the wagon box and said angle bars 6- 6. I
The outer ends of the upper pair of bolt rods 11-11 are adapted for engagement within horizontal slots 1313 formed in the sidesofthe boxand said angle bars 66 at the upper ends thereof. The extreme ends of said upper bolt rods are formed with 13, the outer ends of which are provided with outwardly extending lugs 15 -15 against which said heads will strike so as to prevent the outward movement of the end board at its upper end when the heads are drawn tight against the slots as indicated ,by' the full lines in Figure 6. However, when the complementary lever 10 is moved in a'direction toward the left inF-igure 1,
vided adjacent its upper andlower edges heads 14 that overlie the edges of the slots these heads 1% will be forced outwardly'bayond the lugs 15'15 so that the end board may be outwardly swung at its upper end so as to provide a scoop board as in Figure 2,
it being of course understood that the bolt rods 1l11 at the lowerend of the vend board act as pivots therefor. In a like manner when the lower bolt rods 11-11 are withdrawn from the sockets 12, the lower end of the end board will swing outwardly as indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 4,
in which instance the upper bolt rods 11-11 afi'ord pivots for the upper end of the end board. i
For limiting the inward swinging movement of .the lower end of the end board, the opposite edges thereof at said lower end are provided with cleats 1616 that willen? gage the ends of the wagon box side walls as clearly indicated in Figures 1 and 3.
I secured to the side walls of the wagon box directly inwardlyof the end board 7 is apair of clamps 17 -17 to whichare connected chain lengths 18 that are in turn connected at their outer ends to the end board '7 for limiting the outward swinging thereof when the upper bolt bars are released. i
i It will thus be seen that I have provided a highly novel, simple and efiicient coinbined 'end gate and scoop hoard that is Well adapted ,for all the purposes heretofore designated and even though I have herein shown anddescribed the invention as consisting of certain detail structural elements,
it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without eifecting the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
c. Having thus described the invention, what I cla m as new 1s In combinat on with a wagon box, vopen at its rear end, fmetallic bars secured to the outer faces of the sides of the box at the rear edges thereof, an end board for disposition within the open rear end 'of the wagon box, wings extending laterally from said wagon box sides and the bars being formed with registering slots which extend inwardly from the outer edges of the sides of the bars adjacent the upper edges thereof and through which the outer ends of the upper bolt rods are slidable, said upper and lower pairs of bolt rods being selectively disengaged from the sides of the wagon box and the respective bars whereby the end board may be swung from the box either at its upper or lower edge portion, ears extending laterally from each of the'bars ,on opposite sides of .the open end of the slot, and heads formed on the outer ends of the upper end of the pair of bolt rods adapted to. engage the inner sides of the earswhen said bolt rods are in one position whereby to provide a pivot on which the upper edge portion of the end board may swing when thelower pair of bolt rods are disengaged from the registering openings in the lower portions of the sides and bars respectively.
In testimony whereof we affix ourfsignatures.
