TOBACCO PIPE.

A'pplication'filed December 10, 1925, Serial No. 74,513, and in Great Britain December 16, 1924.

This invention relates to tobacco pipes and it has for its object certainimproveinents designed not only to secure the dry smoking of the said pipe but to` enable the pipe to be `readily cleaned when soA desired. According to this invention the pipe is provided within the bore of the stem and mouthpiece with a hollow body longitudinallydivided either construct-ionally or by means fitted therein, or provided with longitudinally extending parts, in each case for thepurpose of retaining a compact removable absorbent body in a part only of the bore of the stem and mouthpiece, so that the pipe has a clear smoke passage from the bowlto the mouthpiece end. u In order that the invention may be the better understood drawings are appended in which:-Y l Y Fig.` l isa. longitudinal section of a pipe embodying the present invention, Fig. 2 is a perspective view `of the body carrying the absorbentmaterial removed from the pipe, t

Referring to Figs. l and 2 of the accompanying drawings, a indicates the body of the pipe and Z2 the mouthpiece.

Disposed within the bore of the stem of the pipe, which is of such diameter as to snugly contain it, is a tubular body c divided longitudinally by a perforated strip or plate of metal d. The width of thestrip at' one end is increased as shown at all, d1, to form projections which engage slits formed in the end of the said body, and so serve to hold the strip against displacement.

`The bore of the mouthpiece is also enlarged for a certain portion of its length to receive the body c.

e indicates the absorbent body which may conveniently comprise a pipe cleaner of the kind formed by a twistedwire engaging woollen or other fibres. The cleaner, when doubled upon itself, is inserted beneath the erforated strip d and may be readily withdrawn and a fresh one substituted.

The end of the body c, where it enters the bowl `of the pipe, is cut away as shown thereby permitting the ready entry of the smoke to the body c.

f indicates ajprojection uponthe upper portion of the circumference of body c, said` projection `engaging a slit or recess 01 formed at the outer end of the lock a7, and by means of which not only is the proper positioning of the said body c ensured, but its rotation independently of the vmouthpiece is prevented.

In the alternative arrangement illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 the body c is ofsubstantially semi-circular cross-sectional outline and is provided upon each side with internal projections g running longitudinally thereof, a sufficient space being left between said projections `for the moisture tofpass to the absorbent body, e.

In order to prevent lateral or vertical movement of the body within the bore of the stem and mouthpiece there are provided at j certain points in the vlength of said body archshaped portions indicated by t so that at `these points the lbody is of circular crosssectional outline and fits snuglykwithin the borel ofthe stem and mouthpiece. f

.In the vmodification shown inl F ig. 5, kthe absorbent carrying body is constructed to provide two tubularmenibers, disposedside byside and of such diameter as to each contain one half `of a pipe cleaner folded or doubled as previously explained. Openings 'are provided at the side ofthe members,

as indicated at h1, through which `moisture may pass to the said body.

As the libres of the cleaner project slightly 'through the openings [il and contact with` the surface of the bore of the stein and mouthpiece, `by rotating said body itwill Y actto `remove any matter thereon and so keep the pipe clean.

By means of the present invention any moisture resulting from condensa-tion in the stem or mouthpiece is absorbed by the body e and its entry to the bowl of the pipe or the mouth is prevented.

Moreover, as the body c is removable and replaceable, it may be cleaned from timey to time as may be necessary and the absorbent body readily renewed.
