DAMPER.
Application filed April 1s, 1927. `seriai No. 134,657.l
This invention relates to an improved damper for use in connection with stove and furnace pipes. l l
My principal aim is to provide an exceptionally simple and inexpensive damper which is composed of a Vrotatably mounted main disk having an opening` formed therein, and an independently and swingably mounted flap valve therefor.
' My ideav is to provide ay damper of the foregoing construction wherein the flap valve is normally closed, but is capableof being lifted upwardly to particularly open position under action ofpressure, built up beneath it. This, it is thought, will serve to conserve fuel, yet will allow a sullicient draft, and operate in a safe manner. c
The particular details and their relative arrangement will become apparent from the follovf'ing description and drawings.
YIn the drawings Figure l is a horizontal section through a c stove pipe showing the improved damper located therein.
Fig. EZ is a section taken approximately uponithe plane of the line 22 of Fig. l.
, Fig. 3 is a section taken at right angles to Fig. 2.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, it will be seen that the reference character l designates the stove pipe which is of ordinary construction. The damper, as before indicated, comprises a disk 2 secured by knuckles 8 on its under side to the rotary rod Il. This rod has one end 5 extending through a bearingopening in the stove pipe and has"its opposite end extending'througn and beyond a bushing 6. `The bushing is forn'ied with a tongue which extends through an openingl formed in the stovepipe in order that it may be held against rotation.
Surrounding the extendingportion of the rod is a coiled spring` 7 which bears against the stop washer 8 located just inward of the hand grip 9. Obviously when the rod is rotated` the kdisk 2 is rotated withit. Incidentally, the disk is provided with a'seg mental opening 10 on one side of the rod. and on the opposite side it is provided with an upstanding stopV l1 inclined in the mailner shown better in Fig. 2.
The flapvalve 12r is kof segmental forni to f correspond with the shape ot the opening I0 and it is of slightly greater size so aste eX- tend over and beyond the edge ofthe open-m ing and to effectively close thela'tter. Nor-L mally the valve isvclosed, and itwill he nof' ticed that itis providedr with a central hinge knuekle'l on oneedge which surrounds the central portion of the rod 4t. This yallows the valve to be freely movable with vrespect to the disk 2. f
7With this arrangement, it is obvious that closed with the ,exceptionfjo't' the marginal even though the damper, as a unit, is fully onV the interior of the pipe, it is possible for Y thek gasesand 4particles'of combustion to escape when a sufficient pressure is `huilt `up beneath the damper. FOrinStance, when the pressure becomes sul'llcient, it raises the flap valve up suilicientlyjfar to allow the As soon as thepressu're is,
gases to escape. reduced, the valve closes bygravity; Itis therefore obvious that with a damper of this construction, the fire inthe lire potlwill be more ellicient and throw out more heat.
At the saine time, there will be asaving of coal. It is believed that by consideringy the description in connection with the drawings, a clear understanding of the construction as wellas the features and advantages ofthe invention will be had.
sary. .y
' Iinor changes in rangement may be resorted to within the Vscopeof the adjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new is z*- A damper ycomprisinga disk including` a what posed alined knuckles, a rod extending the shape, size, andar# In vview of this, av Vmore lengthy description is thought unnecesvsegmental opening. a pair of centrally dis-Wr a handle, and the retaining spring, and a n segmental flap valve rockahly mounted on the central portion of said rod andadapted to cover said opening. n c c In testimony whereof I allix my signature. HAROLD JOIVETT.
