, COMBINATION RIM TOOL ANnfJAOx.
Appiianqnined March as, 1927. seria'iNo. 179,297.
This invention relates to improvements in appliances for use in connectionwithfthe operation ofmotor vehicles; My principal object is to provide as a single unit a tool which may be eflicie'ntly used. as a jack for any purpose, such as raising or lowering a wheel of a motor vehicle for vmaking tirev changes; which maybe also used for exs panding and contracting the usual split de-A mountable tire rims; 'and also as a powerful appliance for pulling any one element toward another. y A further object ofthe yinvention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for lthe purposeLv for which it is designed. i Theseobjects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts -as will-fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims. In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the` several views:
Fig. l is a longitudinal elevation of my improved tool as applied to a split rim to contract the same.
" Fig. 2 is a sectionalelevation of the tool detached. y o
Fig. 3 is a view of the tool` as appliedv to expanding a rim.`
Referring now more particularly to the characters of referenceon the drawings, the
may be nearly double the length ing to the telescoping of one'stem into the other the total length of the structure when the stemsl are separated as far'as possible e of the jack when the stems arev contracted.
One stem Ais threadedright-hand and the other left-hand and thev pitch of the threads is the same. Itwill vtherefore be seenthat if ,the barrel [isk rotated the stems will be moved ino'r out relative to the barrel lan or polygonal sidedbore 9 inwhichis vslid-` ablethe similarly shaped head 10 of a stein 'equal `distance simultaneously. `.In order to l1 Wh'ichjis secured at its opposite endinthe I pad 6 ofthestemj 5. 'lhisstem vis of such a length that will not. interfere with the full stroke of thestems awayfrom each other. Various mechanisms may be provided' for rotating the barrel to effect the above' movement of the stems. In the present instance I mount a bevel gear 12 on the barrel which engages a bevel pinion 13 which in turn is mounted in a housing 14 turnably disposed about the barrelr but fixed against.V
movement longitudinally thereof. This pinion isv provided with a socket member 15 or the like outside the housing so that a turning implement of any character and length may be detachably applied thereto.
Projecting koutwardly from the opposite sides of the pads 6 and ^8 in longitudinal alinement with eachV other are orihced lugs 16 to which may be removably attached one yend of short independent chains 17, the outer Y ends of'which carryhookslS. These hooks are particularly shaped Vto be engagedlwith the side flanges of a demountable rim 19, at i diametrically opposed points thereon.
In operation, for use as a jack the opposed f pads of the de-vice are engaged with the ground` and with the axle or other part of the car respectively, anda rotative move-` ment isapplied to the pinion 13 to cause the barrel to be rotated. and the stems to be raised'or lowered as the case may be.
When the device is used to contract a rim the stems are `first advanced somewhat and the hooks are then attached to the rim at opposed points and on both sides thereof, one
pair of such hooks being disposed near 'the split S ofthe rim and of course engaged with that portion of the rim which is to` be drawn inwardly..y y 'Iffthenfa retractive or telescoping movement is imparted to the stems the rim will be drawn inwardly by the pressure thus applied to the chain hooks, as will be evident. When using the tool to expand the rim back into place I preferably 4lay a cross timber as at 20 in the rim in a suitable position and rest one pad against the timber while the other pad bears against the rim at such a position that an outward movement of the stems will cause the rim to be forced outwardly and into place. By means of the chain and hook arrangement the tool may be also used in certain cases in place of a block and tackle structure, as will be obvious.
The hooks are of suoli form that any desired number of links of the chain may be taken up and engaged with the hooks, so as to shorten the operative lengths of the chainsto any desired degree.
From the foregoing description it will he readily seen that I have produced such a f device as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention as set for herein.
While this specification sets forth in 4detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim asnewfand useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
i. A jack including a barrel, a screw stem threaded therein from one end, another screw stein arranged'to telescope into the inner end of the first named stem from the inner end and threaded into the opposite end of the barrel, the threads ou the stems being cut in opposite directions to each` other, means for rotating the barrel, and a. stem fixed in the first named screw stem at its outer end and projecting lengthwise into the last nan'ied screw stem from the inner end ythereof in slidable but nonturning engagement therewith.
2. A structure as in claim l, in which the bore inthe screw stem into which said fixed stom projects is larger than said fixed stem except at the inner endof the screw stem, and the fixed stem` has a head on its outer end movable in the larger portion ofthe bore.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature.
