Description

E. S. NEWGOMER.
Letter-Box.
No. 166,800, PatentedAug.17,18'75.
g V WITNg ES 621m EfEg/W ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMORY S. NEWCOMER, OF OREGON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LETTER-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,800, dated August 17, 1875; application filed June 19, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMORY S. NEWGOMER, of Oregon, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvementin Letter-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a partof this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 .of the drawings is a representation of a vertical section of my device. Y Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail .view.
This invention has relation to means for receiving letters when brought to the door by the carrier; and it consists in providing the letter bag or receptacle with a hinged bow at its mouth, having arms, which are connected to the door plate or cover of the letter-chute so that, when the latter is opened, the mouth of the bag or receptacle will be extended to receive the letters, closing when the door plate or cover is shut, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the bag or letter receptacle, made of flexible material, the mouth of which is attached to a hoop or bow. B represents the hoop or bow, hinged or pivoted, as shown at a, to the door or frame 0, below the slot or chute D. E represents the doorplate or chute-cover, designed to be hinged to the door or frame 0 on the outside. The bow B is provided with arms 1), extending above its hinge, to which cords or rods 0 are attached to operate the bag or letter-receptacle. These cords are also attached to the chute-cover or door-plate so that when the said plate or cover E is raised the mouth of the bag or letter receptacle A will be distended by the leverage of the arms b of the hinge-bow 0. When the door plate or cover E is released from its raised position after the deposit of mail, it falls down againstthe mouth of the letterchute, operated by its own weight and that of its bow, in the position shown in Fig. 2, against the door or frame.
This letter bag or receptacle may be placed on any common door, as shown in the drawings, and the cover may serve the double purpose of a name-plate and cover for the letterchute.
Letter-boxes have heretofore taken up so much space within the door as to be inconvenient, whereas my letter bag or receptacle is so constructed as to require very little space, except when receiving the letters.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a flexible letter-receptacle, with a'hinged bow at its mouth, provided with arms I) 0, connected to the door-plate E, forming the cover of the letter-chute, whereby, when the door-plate is raised, the mouth of the receptacle is extended to receive the letters, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
EMORY S. NEWOOMER.
