CANISTER AND LIKE BOX CONTAiNEIt.
Application filed August 6, 1926', Serial No. 127,690, and in Great Britain Februar 17, 1522;.
This invention has reference to canisters and like, boxes or containers,
, The invention has for its purpose the provision of, anauxiliary or secondary closure device whereby access to the contents of the canlster or container may be simply and expeditiou'sly obtaihed without the necessity forjremoval of the lid which constitutes the primary closure member. j V The invention consists in a canister or container having a lid or primary closure member in which is provided a secondary closure device comprising a sector which is movable about a central pivot in the lid. and in relationto a sectorshaped aperture therein, by means of a fingerpiece provided on the movable sector, The movable sector is adapted for a limited rotational ad ustment around the inner face ofthe lid and upon the upper rim of the canister body,
and said rim is preferably inturned to ena sure an effective seating for the rotatable sector., The fingerpiece may upstand integrally from aside edgeof the movable sect orfso to project through the sector-shapeiil aperture in the lid and to frict onally over; lieone edge of said aperture when the sector is closed. Alternatively the fingerpiece may project ,ra diallyfrom the peripheral edgeof the movable sector so as to operate slidably within a peripheral slot in the lid. Preferably thelid or primary closure member 18 1tsel rotatable in relation to the canister body,
in which case the movable sector constitut ing thesecondary closure device is adapted to cooperate selectively witlra plurality separatecompartments provided by upward radial partitions within the canister or container, said partitions being provided for example by a pair ofirelatively .slidablaV- shaped members having an interengagmg apical joint.
In order that this invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice, reference may be had to the appended explanatory sheet of drawings, upon which Figure 1 is an elevation in perspective of a canister having the present improvements applied, the lid being shown removed from the body.
Figure 2 is a plan of the lid.
Figure 3 is an inverted plan of the lid.
Figure 4 is a sectional elevation of the canister in its assembled condition.
Figure dis a plan of the body.
F igurefi is a perspective. view illustrating a modified form of the invention... a
F gure 7 is a perspective view, and y Figure 8 is a plan, of a further modification. v
In a convenient embodimentof the invention, acanister or containera of cylindrical form is provided, this canister a being fitted with alid 7) constituting primary closure member. The body of the canistereis of any ordinary oi: suitable construction, and is conveniently of sheet metal throughout, or of aconstruction in which a sheet metal base and asheet metal rim are. combined with an intermediate. tubulargpart of compressed paper or the like. erably of a flanged sheet metal construction and is rotatably assembled upon the body, the connection being either of a screwthreaded character (as showninFigure 6) so as to render the lid detachable, or being of a permanent character provided for enample (as shown in Figures 1, 4,,and 7) by freely rotatable retaining engagement be tween a plurality of indentations c on the lid flange (Z and an external annular rib e on the body.
The face of the lid 5 is pierced with a sector-shaped aperture f ofconvenient angulardimension, and a movable sector plate g is arranged in cooperation with this sectorshaped apertureso as to constitute a secondary closure devicefor the canister or container a, this sector plate 9 being mounted upon apivot lu carriedcentrally by the lid, and being thereby rot-atably adjustable around the inner face of thelid Z) and over theupperrim of ,thebody, which rim may be slightly. bevelled or inturned as shownat i to insure an. eflici ent seating for therotatable sector plate. This rotatable adjust ment of the limited by means of a. small fingerpiece j (Figures 1 to 6) upstanding integrally from one side edge thereof so as to project through the sector-shaped aperture f in the lid and to frictionally overlie one edge of said aperture when. the by means of an equivalent fin erpiece j- (Figures 7 and 8) is projecting radially from the peripheral edge of the sector plate 9 slidably Within a slot n so as to operate provided circumferentially flange It will be appreciated that the secondary closure device as hereinbefore described pros in the lid The lid 6 is pref-' sector plate 9 is effected and sector plate is closed, or
' conveniently be provided b vides a particularly simple and expeditious means of access to the contents of the canister or container a, and enables such con tents to be withdrawn, either wholly or in part, without removing the lid 1) which constitutes the primary closure member.
The secondary closure device, when used in conjunction with the rotatable lid 7) as also hereinbctore described is particularly adapted for selective access to graded material or articles enclosed within Separate. coiapartments I. of the canister or container a, the separate compartments in this case being preferal'ily pro 'ided by means of uprightradial partitions 1, so that on the lid I) being rotated to set the secondary closure device over any particular compartment, the movable sector plate g may then be rotated to open this particular compartment and permit of an article or material of thedcsired grade twing withdrawn therefrom, this withdrawal being etl'ccted without either removing the lid Z) or opening any of the other compartments k. In the formation of the compartments in, the radial partitions Z may y a pair of relatively slidable sheet metal members of V formation having an ii'iterengaging apical JOHN; m.
The canister or container as described. whether partitioned or otherwise, is adapted for general use where quick and frequent access to the contents is rctpiired. It is however particularly suitable for enclosing powders for culinary or tor toilet use. or tor enclosing cotter pins. screws. and like small articles used in connection with motorcars and the like, and when used tor thcsc special purposes the partitioned torm ol canister or container is of particular advantage. as the material or articles may be graded and packed in the separate compartments fit so that any particular powder or a pin or screw of any desired size can be selected and withdrawn with great facility.
\Vbat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A. canister or container which comprises. in combination. a cylindrical body, an inturned upper rim thereon. a lid titted on said body to constitute a primary closure and having a sector-shaped aperture, :1 central pivot in said lid, a sector plate movable about said pivot and in relation to said meter-shaped aperture to constitute a secondary closure, and an operating lingerpiecc on said movable sector plate, said sector plate being" adapted tor a limited rotational adjustment; around the inner face of the lid, upon a seating provided by said inturned body rim.
2. A canister or container which comprises, in combination, a cylindrical body, a lid rotatable thereon to constitute a primary closure and having a sector-shaped apertare, a pair of apically jointed upright V- shaped partitions located within said body to provide tour separate compartments therein, a central pivot in said rotatable lid. a sector plate movable about said pivot and in relation to said sector-shaped aperture to constitute a secondary closure, and an operating tingerpiece on said movable sector plate. said sector plate being adapted for a limited rotational adjustment around the inner face of the rotatable lid, upon a seating provided by the upper rim of said body, and being thereby adapted to cooperate selectively with said compartments in the canister body.
2-5. A canister or container which comprises in combination a cylindrical body, upright radial partitions providing a plurality of stator-shaped compartments within said body. a. circular lid rotatable upon said body and having a scctor-slnipcd aperture a central pivot in said lid. a sector plate movable about said pivot and in relation to said sector-shaped aperture to provide a secondary closure device, and an actuating lingerpicce on said sector plate. said lid being rotatable as a whole. to set said secondary closure device over any particular com partment to which access is desired, said sector plate being imle ciendently rotatable to open or close the compartment selected.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
