l-leretofore, considerable difliculty has been experienced in the operationof cupola furnaces by-reason of the fact that at times vthe metal backs up into the 'tuyre'wind-j boxes, fillingthe pockets thereof with@ molten metal.' The subsequent removal of considerable amount of time and effort.v
An object of my invention, therefore. is.
to providel a tuyere wind-box .that shall'fbe characterized bythe absence of pockets and i. other recesses, so that if'themolten metal should back up into the wind-box, no harm vis done.

Other. objects'and applicationsof my in-` vention, as well as details of construction and operation, whereby my inventionmay be practiced, will be yapparent more fully hereinafter, when taken in connection 'with the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. l is a detail vertical sectional view of a furnace and associated wind-box embodyingmy invention.

Referring to the drawing, a furnace wall 1 of usual design is provided with a tuyre opening 2, an outer end 3 of which communicates with a 'discharge end 4 of a tuyre wind-box 5. The tuyre wind-box 5 is provided with an elbow of L section 6, a lower end 7 of which constitutes the discharge end 4 of the wind-box and an upper end 8 of lwhich is continued by means of a tubular tuyre extension 9 to a casing 10 forming the usual wind belt 11.
A feature of my invention is the provision of means, whereby 'such molten metal as` backs up into the wind-box 5 through the air opening 2 not retained and permitted to solidify,v as in the constructionsof the prior art. To this end, I provide the `elbow section 6 (Figs. 2 to 5), which comprisesa casting 12,having lspaced substantially flat side walls 13 and 14, the outer edges 15 and `16 of which are respectively provided with `outwardly extending flanges 17 and 18. Inneredges19 and 2l of theside walls 13 and v14V are, interconnected by `a curvedv wall 22,
, edges and 26,v respectively. The .latter are providedwith outwardly extending 'hori- Azontal flanges '27 and 28,` which areinterconnected `by a :flanged portion v29 extending from an: adjacent upper edge 31 of .theinner-,wall 22. Theside Vwall flanges 27 .and 28 extend to the flanges 17 and 18 formed 0n theouterside walledges 15 and' 16respec-y tively.
The tubular elbow extension 9 is also pro- `upwardly extending flange; 38, the several flanges beingfclamped .against the furnace wall by'bolts 39.

which extend inwardly from side edges 45 'and 46 of' the curved plate 41. These slots are positioned to coincide lwith similar sets of apertures 47 and 48 formed in the sidewall flanges 15 and 16, respectively, whereby the outer cover plate 41 may be detachably secured in position by bolts (not shown). 10i lower edge 51 of the plate 41 may `,be pro-` l vided with a depending'flange 52 which is y apertured to receive bolts 53, so that this end of said plate may be clamped to thefurnace wall 1. f An upper edge 54is similarly provided with aV horizontal flange 55, whereby the opposite end of the plate 41 maybe Se-r cured to the horizontal flange 32 of the tnyere extension 9. The outercurved plate al is thus detachably secured in position.
I further providethe outer curved` plate 4l with an opening 57 through which access may be had to the interior of thewind-box 5 when it is desirable to clean out the connected parts of the furnace.` The opening'V 57 may be closed by a cover plate 58 which, may be` clamped in position by means of bolts 59 that engage slotted lugs 6l of said cover plate; fihelugsblv ai'e so disposed that when the' bolts 591 are released, the plate 58 mayv be easilyl removed. rThe cover platej58 may be provided with an aperture 62 which is normally closed by a glass plate 63 and removably secured in position by a ring 64 defining a so-called peep hole 65;A

I claim:
1. A cupola having an air opening, and a windt-box therefor having a discharge end inoperative relation to said air opening, said wind-box having ay removable plate extending from said air opening, the inner surface of said plate being curved.
2. A furnace wall havingI an opening,.and-" a wind-box having a section extending from said opening and defining an upwardlyy curved interior surface, said section including a removable curved plate,onev end. of"
which is secured to said furnace walli 3. A bootleg wind-box having an air'inlet end, and a transversely extending discharge end, said ends being inter-connected by, a
section having a removable plate provided withl a curved interiorwall.
Ll; A tuyeie elbow constituting one section ot' an air supply passage, said elbow being provided with an elongated aperture extendingjfroni one end thereof, and a curved removable cover for said elongated aperture.
5. The combination with a furnace wall, cf a wind-box having a discharge end adjacent' to said wall, an elbow section of; said wind-box having a removable plate extending forwardly and'upwardly from said wall, the inner surface of said plate defining a curved wall. f
6, A tuy`ere elbow comprising' al casting having'substantially fiat parallel side Vwalls anda curved inner wall, and a curved' plateV removably secured to said side walls so as to deline the outer wall ofV saidelbow.
7. A t'uyere elbow comprising a casting having substantially flatgparallel side walls and ay curved innerk wall, a curved plate secured to saidV side walls, so as to define the outer wall of said elbow,said outer wall having an aperture affording access tothe interior of'said elbow, and a plate for closing said aperture, removably secured to said outer wall, said plate having a sight hole.
8. A tuyere elbow comprising a pair of substantially flat side walls having transversely extending -flanges onthe outer edges thereof, the inneredges beingl connected rby an integral section constituting an inner wall,
and a curved plate removably secured to said flanges so as to constitutean outerwall of said elbow.
9. The combination with a furnace wall, oi" a tuyere-wind-box comprising an. elbow section, andan extension section,said elbow section having a curved. plate, the ends of which are provided with flanges respectively secured to said furnace wall` andlto said extension section.
