Description

UNITED STATES PATENT oEEioE.
ALONZO MARSHALL, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO BENJAMIN MARSH.
VARNISI-I-CAN.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,674, dated February 17, 1857.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALONZO MARsHAi'L, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Can for Preventing Evaporation from Varnishes and Marking Fluids; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters marked thereon.
The nature of my invention is in so constructing a can that only so much of the varnish or marking fluid as is required for pres'- ent use is exposed to the air, and facilitating the return of whatever residue there may be back into the reservoir from which the air is excluded.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A can of any desired capacity is constructed of tin or other suitable material with two distinct compartments as shown at A and B the connecting tube C passing from near the top of the larger vessel A into the side of -the smaller one B. The top of the larger vessel is soldered air tight; a. small aperture to be closed with a stopper, plug, or screw. is provided for the admission of a requisite supply of varnish or fluid, (shown at D.) The smaller vessel has two thirds of the top open, to be closed with a hinged lid when not in use, (as at E).
In using this can, tilting the largest vessel will cause the varnish or fluid to pass over the top and down the pipe C into the smaller vessel or cup, in any quantity needed for present use. It will be seen that to accomplish this the can must be tilted for ward toward the pipe C and also that to ret-urn the residue after using, back from B to A the can must be inclined back from the tube. The one third of the top of the cup B is made tight for the purpose of allowing the fluid or varnish. to enter the pipe C when the can is inclined either way withoutl overflowing through the lid, E.
Varnishes and marking fluids being composed of matters held in solution by volatile spirits are of course when exposed to the air steadily deteriorating and wasting b-y evaporization.
To prevent the drying up of varnish or marking fluid in cups or cans not in constant use is attended with more care and trouble than they are worth.
To obviate this difliculty and to afford a vrelief from the annoyance is the object of this invention. The use of it has demonstrated its purpose to be accomplished by its peculiar construction, the facility for returning the residue to the bulk in the same apparatus being found a great convenience and a saving of time where haste is required in marking packages for immediate transportation; Of course no claim can be made to the mere exclusion of air in the case.
IVhat I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
Connecting the two vessels by a pipe in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
ALONZO MARSHALL.
