Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
THOMAS FLOYD, OF CHAMBERSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO T. FLOYD AND G. H. MERKLEIN.
SASI-I-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,671, dated February 17, 1857.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS FLOYD, of Chambersburg, in the county of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Sash Fastener and Supporter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure l, is a vertical section, showing the supporter. Fig. 2, is a front elevation.
In Fig. 1, A, the window frame; B, the sash; C, sash strips; D, a triangular lever or catch; E, thumb lever or handle by which it is worked; F, a cylinder screwed to the side of the window frame; Gi, a spiral spring (shown in red lines) working in said evlinder, and against follower H, attached to a cross piece I playing againstcatch D pressing its point b, or b against the sash. a, (in red lines) shows the pivot on which the catch works.
In Fig. 2, A, the frame; B, the sash; C, sash strips; I), triangular lever, or catch;
E, thumb lever; F, the cylinder; I, cross piece attached to follower H.
In the operation of my invention, when I desire to fasten the sash in an elevated position, I raise the sash as high as is desired, and press the thumb lever E, upward, causing the catch D, to assume the position shown in Fig. 1, and to rmly support the sash; when I desire to let down the sash I have only to press the thumb downward on the thumb lever, then lower the window sash as is usual, and the window will be securely fastened, and the sash cannot be raised until the catch' is turned up.
It will be readily perceived that the action of the catch against the sash is such that the greater the force applied to raise or lower it when fastened up or down, the greater will the resistance become, because the catch pressing against the sash' presses into and against it in proportion to the weight applied to the sash,
I do not confine myself to the application of the sash fastener as shown in the drawings, as I may find it convenient to let it into the frame causing it to operate against the edge of the sash style; to do so it will only be necessary to make the handle E at right angles with catch D, in which position it will work equally well against the edge of the style, and may be found as convenient as at present applied.
Having thus fully described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The triangular or catch lever D, and thumb lever E, in combination with t-he cylinder F, the follower H, with cross piece I attached, and spring G, as described and for the purposes set forth.
THOMAS FLOYD.
In presence of SAML. REISHER, JOHN K. WEAVER.
