, rent of hot air and 0 This inventionpreferably relates to a furnace of thatgeneral class where at least a part of theair supplied to the fuel is preheated. The purposes of the invention are to provide a practical design for use in connection with steam boilers and for render ing a furnace more eflicient for heating the boiler, and incidentally preventing loss of fuel in the products of coinbustioi'i. I I
These objects are accomplished by the use of certain air conduits in conjunetion with reflecting pier formations, all of which are constructed within the brick sett ng surrounding the boiler. r v
Bymeans'of the piers the currents of hot air and gas are broken up by their direct impact upon'the piers, and thereby an extensive admixture of the air and the gases is attained in the early stages of combustion.
This furnace is especially designedto burn with high efliciency andfwithout smoke, coal that contains large quantitiesofvolatile matter, andis the result of manyyears of xperin'ienting in actual furnace practice in I connection with steam bo1lers,w'ith mechanical st'okersas well as with hand fired equipment. In constructing this'furnace the following elements are carefully considered: (1) the kindling tei'nperature of thegases of the coal; (2) the quantity ofair' re quired under average conditions of operation; the time necessary'to complete theprocess of combustion; (4) the dimensions of the firebox, combustion chamber, breeching and stack; (5.) themovement of the curgasv necessary to cause the gas to properly combine with the oxygen of the air. By means of this furnace the gases produced from the-burning coal are ignited near the point of their liberation,
excess. air can be eliminated by proper contrjol of the ashpit doors or .of the stack damper, and a fairly uniform temperature increased. I i 1 These objects are accomplished by the decan'be maintained throughout the furnace,
and thereby all the combustible elements may be consumed, the quantity of ash and elinkers reduced to a minimum, the heating surfaces of the boiler kept clean, and the capacity andefliciency of the boiler greatly and in, front of wing vice shownin the accompanying drawing, in
whichv I v Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of the wall structureof a furnace constructed according to this invention and; shows the boiler in side elevation. 'lhi s view is taken on the line 11 Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a' sectional plan view-taken on the line 22 of Figure 1', but with the directs these currents against the faceof pier et causing a second reflection and eddying of the gas and air mixture. 1 In the operation of the furnace the usual fuel'bedismaintained on the -g'rate. The
wall 4.1,1thus bridge wall" 4.1 and the pier 3 at the middle thereon are located at the rear of the grate 'atright angles with the lateral walls of the furnace. Thethroats 6 and 7 are made as small in area as is consistent with a proper and sufficient draft, 111' the furnace, The
bridge wall and'thepier thereon are dis posed at right angles to the general flow of theflcurrents of air and gasin the-furnace and thus give" a (llIGCt impact to those cursui'face thereof, whereby those currents are caused to rebound and eddy, and thereby the air and gases are commixed resultingin complete combustion of the gases. The wing piers -5 are also disposed at'right angles to those currents and stand and tothe rear ofthe throats 6 and 7 in the bridge wall. After passing through the throats 6 and 7 these currents impinge on the front face or surface ofgwing piers 5 directly] opposite with a, direct impact'that causes them to rebound and eddy again and'then flow through.
the single throat 8 between the wing piers 5, and from there on to pier 4-, all of which movements in" such currents tend to promote thorough andv complete combustion of the combustible elements of the coal. The piers 90 rents as they impinge on'the front face or 3, 5 and 4c have still another important function. By reason of their formation the front face or surface of each pier operates as a reflector to the fire in the furnace, whereby heat is reflected towards the front of the furnace resulting in an increased temperature in the grate region of the furnace and thereby creating a condition favorable for the burning of the gases as they are liberated from the fuel andcompletely consuming them near the point of their liberation.
I claim:

A furnace comprising surrounding walls forming a fire-box and combustion chamber, a grate in said fire-box located above the level of the floor of said combustion chamber, a bridge wall located at the rear of said grate, a pier on said bridge wall near the middle thereof and extending from the top thereof substantially to the roof of said furnace, the. front surface of said pier being at right angles \flth the side walls of said furnace and the lateral sides thereof being parallel with the side walls of the furnace, and wing piers joined to the side walls of said furnace at point rearwardly and equidistant from said bridge wall, said wing piers extending from the floor of said combustion chamber substantially to the roof thereof, the front surface of said wing piers being at, right angles with the side walls of said furnace, a pier located rearwardly from said wing piers near the middle of said combustion chamber and extending from the floor thereof substantially to the roof thereof, tl1e front surface of said pier being at right angles with the side walls of said furnace.
"2. A furnace comprising 7 surrounding walls forming a fire-box and combustion chamber, a grate in said fire box located above the level of the floor of said combustion chamber, a bridge wall located at the rear of said grate, a pier on said bridge wall near the middle thereof and extending from the top thereof substantially to the roof of said furnace, the front surface of said pier being at right angles with the side walls of said furnace and the lateral sides thereof being parallel with the side walls of the furnace, and wing piers joined to the side walls of said furnace at a point rearwardly and equidistant from said bridge wall, said wing piers extending from the floor of said combustion chamber substantially to the roof thereof, the front surface of said wing piers being at right angles with the side walls vof said furnace and the lateral sides thereof'being parallel with the side walls of said furnace, a pier located rearwardly from said wing piers near the middle of said combustion chamber and extending from the. floor thereof substantially to the roof thereof, the front surface of said pier being at right angles with the side walls of said furnace.
