FRANK F. FORSIIEE, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR T0 WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINATION COAL AND ELECTRIC RANGE.
Application filed June 11, 1927.
My invention relates to ranges and particularly to combination coal and electric ranges.
An object of my invention is to provide a relatively simple, compact, and easily assembled combination coal and electric range.
In practicing my invention, I provide an electric range comprising an oven portion and a stove portion, a bracket member secured to the frame of the range at one end thereof, a coal fire-box located thereon and suitable trim members to provide a finished appearance.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a view, in front. elevation, of a coal and electric range embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a bracket and base band for supporting the fire box,
Fig. 4 is a view, in end elevation, thereof,
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a bracket and base band for the other end of the range, and,
Fig. 6 is a view, in end elevation, thereof.
A combination coal and electric range 11 comprises an oven portion 12, a stove portion 13 and a suitable supporting frame 14, shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing as embodying a base band upon which the stove and the oven portion are located in side-by-side relation.
The oven portion comprises the usual top and side walls, which may be made of sheet metal, and an oven front frame 15, together with a door 16. A handle 17 is provided in order to permit of opening and closing the door, and a thermostat or temperature indicator 18 is mounted in the door.
The stove portion 13 comprises a plurality of electric heating units 19 shown schematically in Fig. 2 of the drawing. A plurality of manually operable switches 21 are provided and are located below the stove top, these switches being represented by their actuating handles illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. An electromagnetic circuit breaker is located below the stove top to cooperate with the thermostat 18- to con "1 trol the temperature of the oven, this breaker being indicated by the operating handles 22, shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The parts thus far described are those constituting a standard electric range com- I prising both an electric stove and an electric Serial No. 198,042.
oven. It is desired to combine therewith a, coal fire box designated generally by the numeral 23 in Fig. 1 of the drawing, and, as shown in the drawings, the fire box is located at the left-hand end of the complete range, the electric oven being located at the right-hand end thereof. It is to be understood that the relative location of these parts can be interchanged, i. e. the oven may be located at the left hand side of the complete range and the fire box may be located at the right hand side thereof, the construction of the various parts being such as to readily permit of building up a range for either the one or the other assembly.
The usual supporting legs are omitted, and a bracket 24, illustrated more particu larly in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings, is secured to the base band 14 at'the righthand-side portion thereof. The bracket 2 1 is of substantially U-shape and has secured thereto at its lower edge, a partial base band 25 having inturned end portions, shown more particularly in Fig. 5 of the drawing.
Figs. 3 and 1 illustrate a second bracket 26 and a second partial base band 27, which base band is larger or wider than the base band 25. The upper edge portion of the brackets 24 and 26 are bolted against the inside of the base band 14 substantially as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, any suit able number of bolts being used. Legs 29 are provided at each corner, the top portions being bolted to the respective base bands 25 and 27.
The fire box 23 is so designed as to provide a fuel or coal compartment 31 at the upper portion thereof and an ash box 32 at the lower part thereof, together with a cover plate 33, the height of which is such as to make it level with the top of the stove por tion 13. Lids 3 1 and 35 are provided in the top 33, in a manner well-known in the art. The ash compartment 32 is provided with a hinged door 36. A flue 37 is provided at the rear of the range and may extend upwardly for any predetermined distance for connection to a chimney.
A back wall 38 is provided to extend above the two stove portions 13 and 33, together with a top shelf 39 and a back trim portion 11. As these last named portions constitute no part of my invention, they are not described further in detail. I I
As the electric stove portion, 13 is normally provided with an over-hanging side 42, shown more particularly in Fig. 1 of the drawing, an open space remains between the electric stove portion and the fire box 28 and, in order to cover this, a finish piece or trim member 43 is provided, having its upper end so shaped as to fit back of the depending flange portion of the stove top, while the lower portion is secured to the base band 27 by a suitable bolt 44.
The specific details of construction of the individual parts of the fire box 23 are not herein described in detail, as they follow well-known lines in the design of coal stoves. My invention resides more particularly in the combination of a coal-burning fire box which is located in side-by-side relation on a suitable frame having a bracket for securing the same to the frame and more particularly to the base band of a standard electric range.
The device embodying my invention provides a combination coal and electric range which is easily and quickly assembled and which requires the use of a minimum number of vadditional parts for permitting of associating the fire boxwith a standard electric range.
Various modifications may be made in the device embodying my invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, and I desire that only such limitations shall. be placed thereon as are imposed by the prior art or are set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a combined coal-electric range, the
combination with a base band, an electric oven and an electric stove located on and supported by said base band, of a bracket secured to the base band and extending therefrom, a firebox base band secured to the bracket, and a fire-box located on and supported by the fire-box base band.
2. In a coal-electric range, the combina tion with an oven, a stove, electric heaters associated therewith, and a base band for supporting said stove and oven in side-byside relation, of a depending bracket secured to the base band at one end thereof, a firebox base band secured to and projecting laterally from said bracket, and a fire box located on said fire-box base band. v
3. In a coal-electric range, the combination with a main base band of substantially rectangular contour, an oven on said base band at one end thereof, and a stove on said base band at the other end thereof, said stove embodying a top plate overhanging the base band, of a bracket secured to and depending from the base band at the stove end thereof, a fire-box base band secured to the bracket and extending parallel to the main base band, a fire box located on the fire-box base band and spaced from thestove, and a spacing strip located between the fire box and the stove and having an endv portion secured to the fire-box base band. 7
In testimony whereof, I" have hereunto sub szcribed my name this second day of June, 192
