M ll TING APPARATUS.
Application filed July 3, 1924, Serial No. 723,953. RenewedlDecemb'er 20, 1926.
My invention relates to mining apparatus.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved mining apparatus. Another ob ject of my invention is to provide an improved transport and cutting truck for such an apparatus. Another object of my invention is toprovide a mining machine transport and cutting truck of an improved construction especially adapted to use in low veins of coal, wherebythe machine may be transported about the mines with facility.v
Still another object of my invention is to provide an improved mining machine transport and cutting truck having improved driving means therefor, whereby the same may be driven at different speeds directly from'the mining machine feeding mechanism. A still further object of my invention is to provide an improved mining machine transport and cutting truck having reversing mechanism thereon, whereby the truck may be driven in opposite directions relative to a trackway at fast or slow speeds directly from the mining machine feeding mechanism. Still another object of my invention is to provide an improved transport and cutting truck relative to which a mining machine is adapted to be loaded or unloaded or to which a mining machine be secured, thereby permitting the mining machine to out on the truck or to cut on the bottom in accordance with the longwall or the room and pillar methods of cutting, the truck being driven directly from the mining machine feeding mechanism. other objects and advantages of my invention will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration two forms,
which my invention mayassume in practice.
In these drawings,. Fig. 1 is a plan view of myimproved truck with a mining machine carried thereon adapted to operate as a mounted cutter, the dropfront frame being removed and the cutter bar being shown in a plurality of positions, the view being partially in section to facilitate illustration.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partially in section, of the machine shown in Fig. 1, the
dro 'yfront frame being shown in the plurality of positions thereon. 1

Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modified form of the truck shown in'Figs. 1 and 2.
In' this illustrative form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4 I have provided a truck or' guidingfframe 1 suitably mounted on wheels 2 secured to axles 3 journaled in the usual manner in axle boxes 4- and adapted to move relative to a trackway 5. a The forward end of the truck frame has pivoted thereon at 6, a detachable drop front loading or unloading frame portion 7 provided with an inwardly projecting operating" portion 8 which is adapted to be engaged by the bottom of the mining machine during the loading or unloading operation to raise and lower the same relative to the mine bottom. The guiding frame 1 is also adapted to receive a selfprope1led, flexibly fed mining machine, generally designated 9, of the same generaltype as that describedv and claimed in my copending application, Ser. No. 619,839, filed .Feb. 19, 1923, the mining machine being of the longwall type adapted to slide on itsown bottom on the'mine bottom and having an elongated frame 10 which consists of afeed frame section 11, a motor frame section 12, and a cutter frame section 13, the frame sections 11, 12 and 13 be ingsecuredtogetherin any suitable manner. Herein, the section 12 contains a unidirectional pressure fluid actuated driving motor (not shown) although any suitable type of air, electric or other motor may be utilized, if desired; The frame 10 further presents parallel plane surfaces 14 and 15 upon which the machine is selectively adapt-v outer edges of thecutter bar in a well known 7 manner through suitable power connections (not shown) from the driving motor. The cutter bar 16' is as shown herein also adapted to be swung or slued about its pivot 17 into opposite lateral positions relative to the machine frame and at right angles thereto or into alinement with the longitudinal axis of the machine frame or into positions intermediate thereof, and as shown herein is also adapted to be locked in these positions by means of a pin 19 adapted to register with suitably located apertures 20 formed in a flanged portion of the cutting frame 13. As illustrated, a detachable swing arm, generally designated 21, may also be inserted inv one of the unused apertures 20 thus permitting the machine to be utilized as aroom and pillar machine when removed from the truck in a manner described in my copending application Ser. No. 347 ,571, filed Dec. 26, 1919.
cooperate with a flexible feed chain23 durl ing the loading and unloading movements of the machine relative to the truck, during cutt1ng,-during the swinging operation of the bar. and when the machine is cutting on mine bottom at a The feed sprocket 22 is herein, as in my prior the bottom as either a longwall or a room shown) at a fast speed in the opposite direction under the control of a similar frictional controlling device generally designated 25, these controlling devices 24 and 25 forming a part of the feeding mechanism of the machine per se and being adapted to be alternatively operated as described in my copending application Ser.
No. 619,839 by means of acontrolling member or hand wheel 26 disposed at the rear end of the frame section 11. The rear-ward end of the shaft 32 is provided witha bevel pinion, 35 which is adapted to mesh constantly with bevel gears36 and 37 loosely journaled on a transverse horizontal truck driving shaft 38, 1 the gears 36 and 37'being adapted to ternatively connected to the shaft 38 by be almeans of a jaw clutch 39- provided with shipmechanism 40and a suitable operating A feed operating member or sprocket 22 is alsoherein suitably journaled on a longitudinally extending horizontal axis on the frame section 11 and adapted to 'gular position,
34. The shaft 38 is suitably journaled in bearings 42 and 43 suitably carried by the truck frame and the gear casing 34, respectively, and has secured thereto at one end a spur gear 44 adapted to mesh witha spur gear 45 suitably secured to a transverse horizontal shaft 46 disposed parallel with and below the shaft 38 and to which a sprocket ,4? is suitably secured which is adapted to drive the truck wheels 2 by means of chain and sprocket connections 48 and 49 disposed within the outer limits of the truck frame. The shaft 38 is provided. with a suitable frictional bra-king device 50 pr0- vided'with a suitable operating handle 51; :5
which is adapted to be applied to retard the rotation of the shaft 38, for instance, when the truck is moving relative to a trackway of a steep gradient. i
In the use of my improved mining .appae a ratus it will be observed that the truck may be driven relative to the trackway at a fast or ata slow speed in opposite directions directly from the mining machine feeding mechanism under the control of the 'mining,
machine feed control frictional devices 24 and 25, andmay also be driven in the'reverse of these directions by means-of the'reverse gears '36 and 37 and the controlling clutch 39 carried on the truck, any desired variants of these speeds of course also being obtainable. The truck may be controlled in either of these directions by means of the braking device .50. It will also be noted that the mining machine may be removed from the truck by using the in a usual manner, the teeth 31 on the'shaft 32 separating at this time from the teeth 30 formed on the member 27 carried 'by the feed sprocket 22 and the drop front 7 autoflexible feeding member matically lowering to the mine bottom as the chine may be rigidlyfbolted to the truck as by screws 52, the drop front frame then be- 111,9; removed, and the cutter bar swung to the dotted position indicated by A in Fig. 1 and locked in that position by'means of thelocking pin permitting the machine and its truck-to advance underthe propulsion of the truck wheels and the control of the friction 24' to efiect cutting at the desired slow or cuttingspeedof approximatelythree feet per minute while'makingits sumping cut. The bar is then slued or swung by the flexible feedingmember to its opposite anas indicated-by dotted lines by B in Fig. 1, and the truck retracted from the face, in a like manner, this being efmanner.
fected by-simply throwing the clutch 39to reverse the'truck wheel drive and this operation likewise being under the control ofa mining machine feed controlling mechanism. During transport from one place to another the mounted cutter will obviously be driven through the fast feed friction at the desired transport saeed of approximately 100 feet per minute. It will also be noted that the machine may slide selectively on the plane surfaces 14 and 15 on the mine bottom or on the truck,1consequently varying the plane of the cutter bar relative to the mine bottom or to the truck when cutting on the latter.
" In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 5 it. will be observed that a truck body is mounted on wheels 56 movable relative to the trackway 5, this truck body carrying an adjustable frame 57 on which is carried the complete mining machine 9 and the truck driving mechanism including the shaft 38, which is substantially the same as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2. I As shown, the mining machine 9 drives the truck wheels from the shaft 38 under the control of the frictional, devices 24 and 25'hereinbefore de scribed through a chain and sprocket connection 58 to an intermediate transverse horizontal shaft 59 journaled on the frame 57 and the chain and sprocket connections 60 and 61 A plurality of lifting jack mechanisms, generally designated62, which are of a type substantially similar to those described in mycopendi'ng application Ser. N 0.
carried by the truck body 55. In order to maintain the shaft 59 in a fiXed spaced relation' with respect to the rear axlev of the truck, I'have provided a spacing member 7 0 which comprises elements 7 land 72 pivoted together at 78, the latter element also being pivoted at 74 on the front axle 75 of the truck, while the member 71v is pivoted at 76 to the adjustable frame57. 7 By this mechanism it will be observed that as the jack mechanisms 62 areoper ated the frame 57 is caused to move upwardly'in an arouate path about anaxis in a p'redetermin'ed fiXed'relationship withrespect to the, front axle 75, at the same time through the pivotal connection 7 3 between elements 71' and 72,
the lateral adjustment of the framelis per- 1nittecl. Furthermore, attention is directed to the fact that by inaklng connection between the frontaxle and the shaft 76 it is possible to maintain the truck driving shaft 38 and the shaft 59 in operative driving relation to the truck wheels in any vertically adjusted position of the frame 57, thereby permitting'the truck to be propelled re'lativoto the trackway directly from the mining machine feeding mechanism including the frictional controlling members 24 and 25 at a slow cutting speed or at a fast haulage speed. The operation. of the mining machine in this form of my invention is substantiallyithe same as thatbrought out in'regard'to Figs. 1 and 4, and further description is therefore deemed unnecessary. c T
lVhile I have in this application specifically described two forms which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that these forms of the same are shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms Without departing from its spirit or the scope of theappended' claims.
