application mea December '1, 1925. serial No. 73,627, l
My invention relates to a new and useful method of making full fashioned hosiery and the product thereof wherein, a novel method of narrowing is employed in shap- 'ingthe hose in su'ch a way as toleliminate from view, on the nished product,`the unsightly narrowing points, which otherwise appear upon this class of hosiery as a result needles, the series of narrowing points, over the pdrtion of the hose which was narrowed or reduced in width, being spaced a con- 'liderable distance from the edges of the ose.
In knitting full fashioned hosiery of the finer grades, particularly, of the finer grades of silk, such as, for instance, thechiffon hosiery, great diiiculty has been experienced and great loss has been incurred dueA to the frequent vbreaking of a stitch or thread at the narrowing points, thereby causing runs at that particular line of knitting and hence, so damaging the product as to materially 4 depreciate its value and to make seconds and thirds, or to make the product entirely useless and without value as hosiery. Freat the narrowing points does not occur, .or
' the breaking is not noticeable, or Adoes notbecome 'apparent until' the hose is nally seamed'and shapedon the boards, `or possibly, until itis finally sold and worn for the iirsttime.A At any one of these stage s it frequently occursthat, a weakness 1n the'- thread, or possibly, an actual break inthe .thread at t e narrowing points, will immediately start a run. The object 'of my invention is, chletly, to' eliminate the damage caused by the frequent breaking of the thread at the narrowing points, either while in the process of vmak- -v ing or while the hose is'in use, .and more over, to eliminate at the same time the un;
"-f 'sightlyrow of such narrowing 'points on the finished puofduct.`
. mathe above ence in view, my nveninvention. quently, the actual breaking of the threads Referring to tion consists of a method of knitting full fashioned hosiery, wherein, Ithe number of narrowingA needles at each end of the hose, that is, a ng each edge of the hose in the flat condition, is reduced toa minimum o'r 60 to -a relatively low number, to wit, such a number as will bring Athe series of narrowing points at such close distancefrom the edges of the iiat unseamed hose, that when such flat product is finally seamed 'toform 65` the finished hose, the narrowing points will .be taken up, or sewed or stitched up within the seam of the hose, thereby, not only elimi. nating fromview, the unsightly narrowing points, but also so protecting said lnarrow-170 ing points within the seam, that. any weakness or actual break of a thread at such points will not start a -run or in anyway damage the hose, since such run cannot get outside-of the seam. 75 For the .purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings the incomplete asiwell as the complete product -resulting from my novel method, it is to be understood however, that the various instrumentalities of which my inven^ tion consists, can be variously arranged' and organized. and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described. j
Referring to thedrawingsz- A Figure 1 re resents a side elevation 'o f. al finished full ashioned hose embodying my` 9o Figure 2represents a' view of the narrow-v ing points 'of thefhose in .the fiat condition, or uznseamed, embodying my invention'. Figure 3" represents a view of the narrowed portionbf the hose a1ong the seam, 95' on an enlarged-scale also embodying my 1nvention.
reference c aracters 'indicate like parts; 1
designates aA 'full fashioned hose made by my 100 Y'novel method, being composed of the welt 2,
the body or leg-portion 3 and the foot The full fashioned hose', as is well known 1n the art, is vproduced-upon a flat fulI .fasl 1 ione-d knittin machine, wherein' the hose 1S 105 in a at lcondition and is 'also narrowed or shaped at the same time bymeans of a-senies of 'narrowingneedles ateaeh edge of the at .hose form, which narrowing needles are brought into action over the porne .the drawings, which like v a narrowing to that extent. At the points where the hose is thus narrowed, the lines of stitches` carried by the narrowing needles converge with, and intersect theflines of stitches not affected by the narrowing needles, withthe result that the distinctive I'uaurowing points are produced where each of the-normal lines ofstitches meet and terminate in the innermost line of narrowing stitches.
A This is clearly illustratedv in the drawings,
I with particular reference to Figure 2, show-l y sitions.
ing m novel method, wherein the parallel lines esignted by the numeral 5 represent the lines of stitches extending longitudinally throughout the body, while. the numeral 6 des1gnates the lines of narrowing stitches adjacent to the edge of the fiat hose form, which are affected by the narrowing needles and are moved inwardly at suitablel intervals, or with a given number of. stitches byone or two or any suitable number of poat which the innermost of thelnarrowing rows or stitches is intersected by the other rows of stitches unaffected by the narrowing needles, are designated by the numeral 7. It
' y will-be seen .that by my novel method this row of narrowing points 7, vis moved or shifted to within but a slightdistance from the edgesof the flat hose form, while' by the method employed heretofore this line of narrowing points was a considerabledistance from theedges, I'accomplish the above by reducing the number of narrowin needles at eachof the edges from the usua number ofabout eighteenrto a minimum number of about two or three. i
The result of,this novel method is the production of a hose, illustrated in the figures of thedrawing, wherein the'narrowing points 7 are completely taken up by the seam 8 during the normal seaming operatiompro- The narrowingpoints, or thepoints ducing a finished product having no narrowing points in' the body of the hose.
The advantages 'of my novel method and the product resulting therefrom are many fold, as' brought out hereinbefore, to wit, that any weakness of the thread, or even a 'brokenthread at such narrowing points, is
secured permanentl by the seaming operation and thus runs ue to such weaknesses or defects in the threads at the narrowing points are prevented. Furthermore, the unsightly row of narrowing points is completely eliminated from view. l v
It will now' beapparentv that I have devised a novel and useful method of making full fashioned hosiery and the product thereof which embodiesthe feature of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment there; of which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results it is to be understood that such embodiment `i s susceptible of modification in various particulars without .departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrfic-ing'any of its advantages'.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is n 1. The methodof making full fashioned rowing or yshaping said hose along the edges thereof by shiftin inwardly at suitable intervals, a relative y few of the outermost stitches, thereby to position the narrowing marks a relatively small distance from the respective edges of Vthe flat hose form, and spaced therefrom, and seaming the edges of said flat hose 'form'so as completely to gather in, within said sea-m, said narrowing marks.
2. A full fashioned hose comprising a flat fashioned blank ha-vingthe narrowing marks' 1in close proximity to the selvage edges -thereof; said blank .being sewediup'along said gathered withinthe seam produced thereby.
