WATER-TUBE BOILER.
Application filed December 8, 1923. Serial No. 679,303.
This invent-ion relates to water-tube boilers of the type wherein two upper steam-andwater drums and two lower water drums are connected by vertically and diagonally disposed watertubes whereof the vertical tubes constitute down comers and the diagonal tubes constitute up comers, the whole affording a continuous water circulating path. In such boilers, as heretofore constructed, the major flow of water is through the diagonal tube banks, and in consequence a restricted flow occurs in the Vertical banks, thus producing an irregular circulation which 'results in low boiler eiliciency and also causes undue agitation of the water in the steamand-water drums. irregular expansionv and contraction of the tubes ofthe respective tube banks cause the separation ofthe tube connections from the drums.
To overcome these objections is the object of my invention, and to that end the invenv tion, generally stated, comprises a boiler of the type mentioned having the up-comer and down-comer elements of equal water capacity, and having bafHes so constructed and arranged in relation to the tube banks and the drums that an edective distribution of the gases throughout the heatingr surfaces is ensured. i rlhe invention also comprises a novel arrangement of tuberbanks whereby the flow of water fromeach lower drum is divided into two streams which are directed to both upper drums, said banks being so arranged as to presenta maximum heating surface with consequently high over-'all eflici-ency.
The invention also comprises features of construction and combinations of parts which will be .hereinafter described and claimed.

The tubes of the respective banks 8, 9 are equal toeach other in number and area; the tubes of the respective banks 10, 11 are equal to each other in number and area, and the tubes of the respective banks 12, k13v are equal to each other in number and area; the combined capacity of'each pair of banks 10, 12 or 11, l'being equal to the capacity of each vertical bank. Consequently there is established andv maintained a uniform uninterrupted water path to and from the respective drums, since ythe volume of water delivered by the down comers to the respective lower drums corresponds with that delivered by the up-comers to the respective upper drums.

Overlying the outer rows of tubes of the respective diagonal banks 10, 11, and intersecting the planes of the respectivev tubes 12, 13 located in the space-s between the respective water drums and the crossing tube portions, are oppositely-inclined baffle walls'16; and spaced laterally of and above these walls and parallel therewith, or substantially so, are the outer inclined members 17 of an Nlshaped battle structure. The lower portions of the members 17 intersect the planes of several of the adjacent vertical tubes and also the tubes 12, 13, and the upper portions of such members intersect the planes of the vrespective diagonal tube banks 10, 11. The shorter members 18 of the batlle structure j constitute a V-shaped arch that overlies the outer tubes of the respective diagonal tube izo banks at and adjacent the angle ol intersection of `their crossing portions.
The oppositely-inclined baille walls 16 provide, directly above the furnace chamber, a primary heat pass having upwardly converging side walls which serve not only"to direct the hot gases against the lower drums and longitudinally of the lower portions of all the up-comer tubes, but also toward and among the crossed portions oi the two diagonal tube banks 10, 11, thus ensuring the maximum action oi' the heat upon the upcomersl to effect and maintain the rapid 'upward flow of the water 'from the lower to the upper drums. The gases pass above and divide to the outer sides ot the respective .baffle walls 16 in a manner to iinpinge with a cross flow against the adjacent portions 'of the respective rip-comers below the baille members 18, and are then directed downwardly through the secondary passes 'formed between the vwalls 16 and the baille members 17, flowing thence to and an'iong` the respective tube banks, and also in contact with the water drums. The gases then flow upwardly and above the Mlbaille structure so as to impinge most effectively against andpass amongst the opposing upper portions of the up-comers and down-comers and also against the'steam-and-water drums thence flowing against 4and amongst the superheating tubes, land escaping, lin'al-ly, through the stack. .The courseV of the hot gases isindieated by the long arrows. By directing the gases in and through the-devious course shown and descri-bedv a continuous upward circulation of the water through the diagonal tube banks, and a corresponding downward flow of water through the vertical tube banks, are established and maintained; and since the n lip-comers are equal in water capacity to the down-comers there is ensured auniform and unrestricted circulation of the water through ythe tube area, thus producing a boiler having extensive heating and wat-er capacity and at the Sametime reducing to a minimum the agitation of the water in the steam-andwater drums even at high ratings. reason of the rapid andunil'orm circulation of the water throughout the boiler, and 'the described course of the gases, contraction and .Expansion otf the tubes are at alltiines equal, thus preventing separation of the tube connections from the drums.

In a water-tube boiler having two up- Y down-comers having double the capacity of the rip-colliers, a bank of diagonal up-comer with the upper drum at the other side of the boiler, and 'a bank of diagonal `lip-comer tubes connecting the other lower drum'with the other upper drum, said diagonal banks having `corresponding water capacityand each bank being equal in capacity to a bank olE the first-named 11p-comer tubes, the crossing portions of the diagonal tube banks being' interspersed with each other, baffle walls covering the outer rows of tubes of the respective diagonal banks in the spaces between the respective water drums and the crossing portions of the tubes, and a baille structure comprising inclined members spaced laterally of and above the said Awalls and extending across the planes of the. respective ldiagonal banks, and also an arch member connecting the upper ends of the said inclined members and coveringthe outer Q0 tubes connecting the lower drum at one side s ree tubes of the` latter banks at and adjacent their angle of intersection.
3. ln a-water-tube boiler having two upper steam-arid-water` drums, two lower water dru'n'is, two'bank's of tubes connecting't'he upper and' lower drums at eachside of the boiler, one of said banks constituting upcomers `and the other bank constituting down-comers having doublejthe capacity of the 11p-comers, a bank of diagonalup-comer interspersed nwith each other, a. header, v`and superheater tubes leading thereto from the steam spaces. of the upper drums, battle walls covering the outer rows of tubes of the respective diagonal banks in the spaces between the respective water drums and the crossing portions of the tubes, and a baille structure having inclined members spaced laterally of and above the said walls and extending across the planes of the respective .diagonal banks, and also an arch member connecting the upper ends of the said inclined members and covering the outer tubes of the latter banks at and adjacent their angle of intersection.
4. 1n a water-tube boiler, two upper steamand-water drums and two lower water drums, all included in a water circulating path wherein the water before passing from one steam-and-water drum to the other steam-and-water drum is constrained to pass through one of the water drums, said path also including two diagonal banks of crossing up-comer tubes having corresponding water capacity and whereof each bank connects a lower water drum with the remote upper stealn-and-water drum, and the tubes of one bank are interspersed with those of the other bank, a bank of up-comer tubes connecting each lower drum with the adjacent upper drum and being equal in capacity to each bank of diagonal 11p-comer tubes, a bank of down-comer tubes connecting each upper drum with the adjacent lower drum and being equal in capacity to two adjacent banks of up-comer tubes, baille walls adjacent the upper portions of the respective diagonal banks in the spaces between the respective water drums and the crossing portions of the tubes of the diagonal banks, bailie members spaced laterally of and above the said walls and extending across the planes of the respective up-comer banks, and an arch member for the said diagonal banks adjacent their angle of intersection.
