Applicationxfiled. April 2, 1928. Serial No. 99,234. i i
The present invention relatesto roller bolsters adapted for use in lumber trucks and similar vehicles and more particularly to combined bolsters and stake pockets forsuch 8 vehicles. i
The object of the invention is to provide a simplified andimproved-bearing support in a roller bolQter of this descriptionwhich is. at the same time particularly adapted for a 10 stake support, and is stronger and cheaper to build than previous constructions.
WVith this object in view the main feature of the invention consistsin utilizing in a bolster. as a roller bearing andstake support, an angle iron hav ng vertical and hor zpntal faces slotted and fitted across the "end of the usual supporting channel irons in such a manner that the horizontalfalce rests on the channel irons and acts to carry the ma or part of the load which centers on the roller bearing carried on the vertical face, and forms at the same time a broad base to re; sist the outward strainjot the stakes. A bolster constructed in this manner has the further advantage that the parts when fitted together are self-locking and form a structure of great strength and durability.
The various features of the invention consist also in the devices, combinations, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and together with the ad vantages to be attained thereby will be readily understood by those skilled in the art from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Fig. .1 is a view in elevation of one embodiment of the invention in a lumber truck showing only so much of the construction as is necessary to illustrate the connection of the present invention tl'ierewith. Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in section, of the parts shown in Fig. 1 looking from the right. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same parts, the stake sockets being left empty. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing a portion of the bolster and the stake supports.
The combined roller bolster and stake support disclosed by the drawings includesa roller and a bed or cradle in which the roller is mounted extending transversely of the truck, and equipped with stake sockets, one on each side of the roller bearings.
The roller is indicated at 6, and two paral lel channels irons one on each side of the roller forming the sides of the bolster cradle or bed are indicated at 8., A portion of one of the sills or beams forming part of the truck chassis by which the bolsters are usually supported is indicated atlO.
The ends of the bolster consist of angle iron cross pieces whichserve to support the rollenbe-arings 12 and the upright stakes 14, each cross piecehaving a horizontal side 16 and a vertical side 18. Slots 20 are cut'in the vertical side 18 through whichthe lateral beams 8 project into contact with the under surface of the horizontal member 16. Bolts 22 fasten the channel irons and cross pieces rigidly. together making a bolster 01"". simple and at the same time unusually sturdyiconstruction.
. The stakesymay supported by sockets attached to the angle cross pieces in any convenient manner. In the present construction, apertures 24 luive been cut inthe horizontal negro receive the stakes 1a with the edges or flaps Qtibcnt downward mast as barbstoholdthe posts inposition. The vertical side or face 18 of the cross plece'car ries the roller bearing 12 and brackets 30 positioned beneath the apertures 24 to serve as additional supports for the stakes.
It is contemplated that a lock will be provided for the roller and the end of the trunnion 32 of the roller is squared to receive a hand lever so that the load may be easily moved in loading and unloading.
The invention having been thus described, what is claimed is:
1. A roller bolster and stake support for a lumber truck having, in combination. a roller, two transverse parallel sill-s one on each side-of the roller and two angle iron cross pieces to support the roller and stakes comprising vertical surfaces slotted to receive the sills, and horizontal surfaces to rest on the sills projecting through the slots and forming additional support for the vertical surfaces.
2. In a lumber truck the combination with a supporting frame of a roller bolster and stake support comprising a roller, roll er bearings, stake sockets, two transverse parallel sills one on each side of the roller, and two angle iron cross pieces to support the roller bearings and stake sockets having vertical faces through which the sills are projected and carrying the roller bearings and stake sockets, and horizontal faces to "rest on the sills for supporting the vertical faces.
3. In a lumber truck the combination with a supporting frame of a roller bolster and stake support comprising a roller, two transverse parallel sills one on each side of the roller, two angle iron cross pieces to sup port the roller and stakes having vertical faces through which the sills are projected and horizontal faces to rest on the sills for supporting the vertical faces and roller bearings and stake socketscarried onthe vertical faces of the cross pieces.
4:. A combination roller bolster and stake support for a lumber truck having, in combination, a roller, two transverse parallel sills one on each side of the roller, two angle iron cross pieces having vertical sides slotted to receive the sills and horizontal sides with apertures to receive the stakes and arranged to rest on the sills, roller bearings mounted on the vertical sides of the cross pieces, and stake sockets mounted on the vertical sides to receive the butt-s of the stakes.
5. A combination rollerbolster and stal: support for a lumber truck having, in combination, a roller, two transverse parallel sills one 011 each side of the roller, two cross members having face-s in substantially horizontal and vertical planes, the horizontal faces having contact with and being secured to the transverse parallel sills, roller bearings mounted on the cross members, and stake sockets formed in the cross members.
6. A combination roller bolster and stake support for a lumber truck having,in combination, a roller, two transverse parallel sills one on each side of the roller, two cross members having faces in substantially horizontal and vertical planes, the horizontal faces having contact with and being secured to the transverse parallel sills, roller bearings mounted on one of the faces of the cross members, apertures in the horizontal faces for the stakes and stake sockets cooperating with the apertures to receive the stakes. 7. A combination roller bolster and stake support for. a lumber truck having, in combination, a roller, bearings for supporting the roller, two transverse parallel sills one on each side of the roller, and two angle iron cross members having faces in substantially horizontal and vertical planes, the horizontal faces having contact with and being secured to the transverse parallel sills.
8. A combination roller bolster and stake support for a lumber truck having, in combination, means for supporting the stakes, a roller, bearings for the roller, two trans verse parallel sills one on each side'of, the roller and two angle iron cross pieces ar-h ranged with their horizontal faces in contact with and secured to the transverse par allel sills. In testimony whereof I have name to this specification.
